Hi everyone. We’ve been listening to all of your feedback about the PS3 and PSP, and with these next firmware updates (coming soon), we’ve added a number of new features and improved some existing functionality to make your PS3/PSP experience even better.
PSP (v5.00) update
Let’s start with the v5.00 update for PSP. In this version, you’ll notice the addition of the PlayStation Network icon on the XMB. You can now sign up for PlayStation Network, manage your account and access PlayStation Store directly from your PSP – meaning you can download games directly to your PSP while connected via Wi-Fi. Getting games, demos and trailers while on-the-go has never been easier! Check out the screen below.
The current PlayStation Store on the PC will be down in the interim as we take some time to revamp. Don’t worry, it will re-launch soon after we’ve made some tweaks. Please keep in mind, if you already have a PlayStation Network account, simply sign in on your PSP using your existing information. The same account and wallet can be used on PS3 and PSP. You will be able to check out the PlayStation Store on the PSP soon, as we’ll have a video demo featuring Grace Chen posted soon on the Blog.
Update v5.00 adds a sleep timer option that can be used while you are playing music on your PSP. In addition, we’ve added a full screen keyboard option for text entry and have redesigned the background of the XMB. You’ll be able to find all of the information on Firmware v5.00 here once it goes live.
PS3 (v2.50) update
Now on to the PS3 v2.50 update. The latest features/enhancements include:
- Support for the PS3 Official Bluetooth Headset – we’ve told you about the upcoming Bluetooth Headset and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Bundle on the Blog. This latest firmware installment enables High-Quality (HQ) mode, which delivers clear and wide-band online voice chat. On top of that, an added on-screen indicator shows battery status, volume level and use of HQ mode.
- PlayStation Trophies interface enhancements – I know that many of you are busy collecting trophies and raising your PlayStation Trophy level. This update makes sharing and comparing your trophies with your friends even easier. On 1st part of the profile page you’ll see a symbol under level that represents level and the actual percentage towards the next level along with the existing level meter. The level symbol carries over to the trophy comparison screen where you will now be able to see your level, your friend’s level and the percentage towards the next level for both users along with all of the game by game comparison information you see today.
- Friend status – Offline friends on your Friends list will have information below their avatars that will indicate how long it has been since they were last online.
- Video – This update adds the Scene Search feature similar to the feature on the PSP. Activating this feature while viewing a video on the PS3 will break the video up into scenes that you can quickly access by pressing the X button. You can break the videos into one, two or five minute intervals. In addition, you can now choose to have all of the videos under the video section of the XMB play in sequence. Go to Settings then Video Settings to turn this option on.
- PlayStation Store – We’ve added a redeem codes option right on the store to make it easier to redeem your PlayStation Network Cards and promotion codes. In addition, PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned.
- Power Save Settings – You can now set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity. Go to Settings then Power Save Settings to turn on these features.
- Background Downloading – You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed.
- In-game Screenshots – this tool will allow everyone to capture, share and in other words, immortalize their favorite gameplay moments. This will be supported on a game by game basis. Please check back to find out which games will support this feature.
- In addition to all of the features above there are some additional features and enhancements included in 2.50. Once the update launches, you can read all of the details here.
The support for the Bluetooth Headset will be of particular interest to all of you SOCOM fans. With the “Proximity Chat” feature, SOCOM: Confrontation gameplay is intensified as it allows you to experience high-quality voice playback in full surround sound. Whether the action is near or far, Proximity Chat clearly matches distance to sound effects and voiceovers within the game, putting you in the heart of the action.
Enjoy and please share your thoughts with us.
oh, and be a able to go do splitscreen multiplayer online with your own PSN ID for other games, not just LBP.
Wow… now those are some fantastic updates that will be adding some great features and functionality. I’m sure there will be more coming soon and new features like cross game voice chat but what a great update.
I do have on request… is there any chance that the PS3 will see some features that the PSP has such as the Internet Radio feature? One other small feature that would mean a lot is being able to have different wireless network settings saved ala PSP… such a pain to go to a friends house that has a lot of encryption and custom settings then go back home and have to re-enter all of my stuff. Any reason why this feature could not be implemented?
Also please lower the buying costs for movies on the PSP store! The SD movie content is as expensive as a month old DVD at bestbuy! 15.99 for Iron man? WTF sony? Your makeing the idea of the $20.00 PSN card worthless! The games on the PSP need some major price drops as well too please!
Great job but where is HOME, come on guys… Open the beta or something.
-In game XMB voice chat and group chat with any game
-XMB custom soundtrack with any game
are the 2 features that should be the first things to add with a new firmware update. Chat function is only thing thats holding it back from being as good as XBL really.
also…Why is there nothing being said about the microphones dropping INPUT side from bluetooth devices???
I know at least a dozen people on my PSN friend list that have this problem. 2.50 better fix it.
WOW I Really like this update! THX!
Nice update :D Its just the things I needed :)
questions!
1. Is there a chance to create videos of you’re gameplay in the future? (That eider gets saved on the Hard Drive or youtube)
2.Is there a chance for a music video program? There you can take the music, pictures and video from you’re hard drive and create music videos:D
There was my two questions and I am also intressted in the things that 37 said :)
no we all want ingamechat a bit like ingamexmb but you can talk to other people in diffrent games and please please think about all these ideas we know what needs to be improvied on PSN
Last commant till I rant about how great the PSP is:
Fix the fallowing problems with the PSP firmware:
When the W-lan swtich is on and your online as well as you have the W-lan Power save on it laggs PSP games, and the PSP internet Browser by a huge ammount. 20-30% more lag In my use of it. But if you leave it off you drain your battery life much faster please fix this feature!
Also please give the PSP the fallowing features:
WMV support
Divix support
Updated flash support: For the love of god we are on 11 now! get with it!
Support for 16GB and up memory sticks, some people are still haveing issues with them.
Add the fallowing features for the PSP:
Movie play list
music play list
scene selection: For movies you download of the newly launching PSP store.
PSP only internet suggestions:
Update the look so it loads faster: it’s still vary slow for a PSP only site!
Give full dedication to the PSP! No more PS3 news on a PSP only site!
Add links to any PSN game, and profiles to look at them.
Add how toos, and game guides to top games or at least all the Sony games that we can read in text format.
PSP Browser enhancements:
Add option to disable warning messages for reloading pages, and unsecure/secure pages notifcations.
Add option to not highlight in flash
Add option to change the highlighted color for text: IE Blue, Red, Gree, etc
Add Yue-Tube support IE so we can watch user videos of PSP games in action!
oops. hehe, scratch #6–
you nailed that one!
Awesome. Keep up the great work folks.
man i can’t wait. its got to be soon since the headset will be out soon.
second favourite update behind 2.40!
I love you Sony!
sweet can’t wait
Jaw dropping! I noticed the In-Game Screenshot feature in Linger In Shadows which was pretty cool. The PSP was due for something big and I’m glad you guys finally came through.
Thanks!
when is it coming out

4) ~~~Fix the PS3 Web Browser!~~~
the PS3’s dirty secret! Please Allow flash v9! We can’t even watch videos on these very blogs or surf reliably with the PS3 browser without it crashing… Now that we can upload stuff to YouTube, why can’t we then be able to watch them on our PS3’s?
Fritoz…Flash 9 is NEVER coming to the PS3 unless ADOBE programs it to work with the PS3 chipset. SONY CAN’T FIX THIS ISSUE.
As for watching Youtube on your PS3 you can already do that…not sure why you are having an issue.
Thank you so much… I love this new update both for the PSP and PS3 …
I was wondering why the PSP can pull of Skype and not the PS3 …
Please have an update for Skype on the PS3 … thank you
(you wont regret it)
Dang, this community is awesome. You guys will never run out of ideas!!! Basically, I want everything everyone is listing. I’m sorry but playing a song then clicking on a photo and having the music stop is unacceptable. Please fix that.
Awesome update!
Can you please spare us the idea of an in-game screenshot feature? Developers already know they can do this with their games; in fact, Resistance: Fall of Man has had this feature for over a year now. Stop trying to pawn this off as a new feature by including it in a firmware update.
CLARIFICATION ON IN-GAME SCREENSHOTS.
We need it.
These are great and very much needed features. I’d also like to see a Level up notification.
Awesome firmware update! Been waiting for a “sleep timer” for the PS3. I’ll finally start using the store with the PSP now that I can get to it straight from the system.
I’d like to request RSS for PS3 please.
@275…
There is a difference to programing it into your game and making if firmware call able by the developer….
Basically the programmers will not need to spend memory overhead for this feature in the future if they choose to call it from within a game.
There IS a difference.
this is the greatest update ever!!!!!!!!
thanks.
PSN= wyldekat
I want something to let us change our PSN ID.
WOW FREAKIN SWEET!!!!
But why those Sony genius couldn’t make it so that we would be able to screen grab in every game, as in Windows with print screen? As now, it’s just useless.
Wow this update is huge! Ps3 is only missing one thing.. Voice chat… But WOW! Good job sony. I’m so pumped for this update.
If they have the screen shot thing work with one or two games, I will be so disappointed again….
Wow. Can’t wait for the updates to be released.
Where is Home???
Hi all, good upd8 but please sony wheres the latest flashplayer???
the only thing i want to be added in the ps3 firmware is the abilty to fast foward music at more than double speed.
other than this the PS3 is easily my favourite playstation console to date
Please add that PSP-plus, dualshock stuff to each system’s firmware! I want to use it in every game, not just Resistance
“but please sony wheres the latest flashplayer???”
Adobe has not made a higher version for non-Windows/Mac platforms. Ask Adobe for it, not Sony
That would be vary nice NeoTechni! I wan’t htat too! Also it would make PSone games even more fun!
Just awesome. I like the Video feature you’re about to add. Finally my brother won’t talk about his psp has it and the ps3 not.
A really good update for me really, for the ps3 and the psp. The ps3 needs a new profile viewer like everybody said. A full page one with last games played and all. Like frito said it fell so impersonal and hope that with home this will be changed.
Another thing I want among all what people said is multiple sign in in the same ps3. Game like LBP let me do it and it’s cool but is needed in all games so when my cousin play with me R2 he can earn trophies too.
The last thing… let me choose the color of the wave and I know you let me… but I want to mix the color with the black one; I love more that than wallpapers.
The XMB is cool, you don’t need to redesign it and rest the eyes when we watch it. The other console knew that that’s why the redesign it completely but the xmb needs more I don’t know. Maybe Flash backgrounds will help.
Sweet! The most important feature for me is an updated browser so I can watch all the videos on the internet. The only videos I can watch today are the youtube ones. I really hope you update the browser soon because it hasn´t been updated for a long long time.
this sounds good but socom come out tom…..
this looks great, wait til after the update for my feature-requests=)
oh, except for in-store xmb and music ofcourse, I always want to listen to music while not in a game!(and often then also)
I’ve been reading these comments and what some people have said about adding a calendar sounds really cool. It’d be great to be able to see US PS3 game release dates and Blu-ray release dates for the current month or something like that. I can imagine you guys would find a slick way to do it. :)
@282
Yeah I want to change mine even if I have to pay like the other console.
yee great new firmware :p
but when will it be possible to send picture to my family there is on my contact list, taken from a Sony DSC-W170 “Picture is to big” limit on size ?
Fantastic update. Well done.
Great update. Keep em coming.
