NOVASTRIKE Update Brings Trophies and More

80 66

Hello folks, I’m finally back with some good news – we just submitted the updated version of NOVASTRIKE to SCEA, and you should be seeing the update go live sometime in the next few weeks.

For those of you that have been frustrated by the difficulty (and I know it’s a lot of you) – first off, I’m sorry for the wait (as well as the frustration factor you went through). But each submission requires a fair amount of work, so we wanted to add as many features as possible before submitting the update.

There are now four difficulty modes:

  • RECRUIT
  • SOLDIER
  • VETERAN
  • HARDCORE

RECRUIT, SOLDIER, and VETERAN have all been tamed. As a general rule of thumb I’d recommend if you couldn’t beat RECRUIT in the original release then initially stick to RECRUIT in this release. If you did beat RECRUIT but were having difficulty with SOLDIER then try the new SOLDIER. If you did beat SOLDIER then I’d recommend trying VETERAN. And HARDCORE has no extra lives per stage and is the most challenging (similar to the original VETERAN difficulty).

Now for a bullet list of other items in the update:

Novastrike Trophies

  • Trophies – you’ll now be able to unlock sixteen trophies (12 bronze and 4 silver)
  • Fully Customizable Controls – you can now map weapon selection for the primary and secondary weapons to different buttons and remap other control options. We’ve also added a Type 2 control scheme that is the default for new players. For for those of you that already have the game it will stay on Type 1 until you select Type 2 (or customize the controls) – this was done so that players not reading this post don’t get the update then wonder what the heck happened to the control scheme. And as a final note you’ll also be able to swap the left stick and right stick functionality (Steering and the Omni Cannon)
  • XMB Music Playlist support – want to play your own rocking tunes instead of listening to NOVASTRIKE’s music? Now you’ll be able to do just that
  • Multiple Saved Games – you can now have as many saved games as you want
  • New Weapon Info pane – this is more for new players, but once a weapon is acquired the game pauses and displays an information pane showing the name of the weapon, how to select it, how to fire it, and a brief description of the weapon. While this feature is turned on by default you can also go to the ingame options menu and turn it off if you’re already are familiar with all the weapons and don’t want the interruption
  • Replay Stage as well as Quit and Save options have been added to Stage Summary screen – now after you finish a stage you can advance to the next Stage (as you could in the original release), or you can Quit and Save (which will have you starting at the next stage when you later continue), or you can select Replay Stage to play that stage over again (if you failed some objectives and want to try again to get a higher score
  • Restart Stage option has been added to ingame options menu – if you’re not liking how you’re playing on a stage you can now open the ingame options menu, select Restart Stage, then start the stage over (versus having to quit out and continue)
  • Megapacks and repair packs will replenish the capacitor bar for the afterburner
  • Seeking weapons will now target outer components on capital ships. For example, if you drop an electro-mine near a Heralder, it will now lash the outer hangar “wing” (versus the main body as it did in the original release). This makes stripping enemy carriers a bit easier
  • Friendly Fire damage has been disabled in RECRUIT and SOLDIER (this is just part of the overall taming of RECRUIT and SOLDIER – we also limited the maximum number of active waves, and when your Scythe explodes it won’t damage friendlies in RECRUIT or SOLDIER, either); VETERAN now gives you two extra lives per stage as well – HARDCORE is, well, hardcore
  • The Shredder’s auto-lock on enemy ground structures has been improved – in the original release it sometimes had difficulty locking onto very low ground structures (near sea-level) – this is no longer the case, and the Shredder is much more useful as a result
  • Player ship(the Scythe) is a bit larger in size – but don’t worry, we made sure that it didn’t make the game harder (as the collision model is a bit larger as well)
  • Brief invulnerability after respawning – this is only a few seconds so don’t try to use it to fight, but it will at least provide brief protection if you respawn over an enemy base
  • Leaderboards now show the last completed stage to the right of the score and also show more than 1,000 scores (and HARDCORE has been added to the Leaderboards)

Beyond this we’re working with SCEE to try and get NOVASTRIKE out in Europe as soon as possible. Last, but not least, when the update goes live I’ll go ahead and do another blog post here so I can respond to the initial reactions. I’ll be particularly interested in seeing posts from those of you that stopped playing due to the difficulty – we really hope the update allows you to enjoy and finish the game.

I’ll also be checking this blog post and trying my best to respond to any questions that are brought up. And if you made it through this long post – congrats!

  • Never heard of it, but I may have to check it just for trophies!

  • I must have missed this game when it was released. I like when games get adjusted or updates that respond to players.

  • Will buy the game when the patch arrives. Thank you so much for the update.

  • Well, guess what? I’m buying this now.

  • WOW greatest news I have heard all day!!

Novastrike is an excellent little game! I love it, it reminds me of superstardust HD another of my favorite games! I love the top down shooter genre! so much fun, and the fact that another of my all time favorite games are getting trophies makes me sooo happy!

thank you I appreciate this very much, I am now even more glad I bought this game so long ago!

    whoooo

  • Wow you guys are amazing this update sounds AWESOME!!! I bought the game the week it was released! I loved it but never beat it! When I read you guys were thinking about implementing trophies I held off on playing it and I’ve been waiting to hear about this update. Those trophy designs are awesome too!

    • Hi CitizenEraser. Thanks for the kind words regarding the trophy art – we wanted to make sure the trophies looked good (my art director did a very nice job on them). Hope you make it through (and collect a bunch of trophies) when the update is released.

  • My favorite part of Novastrike: The music that plays when you highlight the game.

Hopefully the patch will help me appreciate the rest of it.

    • Hi Aeneman. I certainly hope the update makes you enjoy more than just the music over the animated NovaStrike icon – I\’m not quite sure that alone is worth $10. :) Please let me know your thoughts when the update is released.

  • Hi .. It’s i great game ..

I am trying to buy it .. but !

I can’t find it in my PSN store !

    I am in Asia ..

    • Hi kh3khalid. It\’s not out there yet, but should be shortly after the updated version passes QA here. Thanks for the interest.

  • Ok does this game support co-op at least offline? Anyone know?

  • Its true that it was difficult, i didnt complain tho i just didnt play it much because of this, but now im gonna try to finish it :)
    Thanks

  • Wow that keyboard will come in handy when messaging friends or talking on the forums threw my ps3. Looks like a possible buy.

  • wow… clicked the wrong one good job to me….. sorry about that anyway yea novastrike is a sick game, they are adding trophies so the play value is great.

  • I’m about to have a NovaStroke!
Love the great support keep it up.

    -Sony Rocks-

  • hey Kevin, can I set up the fire button with the right stick now?

    • Hi Captain Fury. If you\’re talking about setting something like the primary fire off a trigger button to the R3 stick (pressing down on the stick to fire) then yes, you\’ll be able to do that. Likewise you can have the afterburner on either the L3 or R3 as well. The weapons (outside of the Omni Cannon) are still directional – so weapons like the Vulcan and such will still fire in the direction the ship is facing, but you will be able to set it to have it fire by pressing down on the stick. Does that answer your question?

  • by now I mean after the update…

also props to your art director, loved Novastrike art style and the trophies look to deliver as well in that department :)

  • Kevin?
First, thank you for reading past the first page of comments, most developers and publishers who post here only read and answer the first page. Not everyone can get here in time to post on the first page, so thank you, it really shows you care.
I have yet to buy the game, but after reading the update you are getting me closer!

Every once in a while the Store has a sale on game titles. Do you get to pick if your game goes on sale, or is that strictly a Sony thing? If it goes on sale, say for half price, do you still make at least some money?
    THANKS
    psn:frostquake

    • Hi frostquake. Regarding your question – I\’ve talked to Sony about their promotions, and when they have their next one (which I honestly don\’t know when it\’ll be) I should be contacted regarding whether or not we want to participate. And yes, we\’d still definitely earn something off a Sony promotional sale, but it\’ll understandably be less. That said I have asked to be kept in the loop for when it happens next. Thanks for the interest.

  • thanks for the answer Kevin

  • Excellent update guys! I bought that game at launch and it was really good…until I died 4 times in 10 minuets. However, those were a good 10 minuets! I just gave up since the game was so hard, so this update is VERY much appreciated! I mean this update is great reducing the difficulty, but with trophies and more features than I feel like reading. My 10 bucks is going very far. I really appreciate the hard work you guys are putting into this game, it really shows. Keep up the work there Kevin. Also can you give us any word on expansion packs or something like that?

    • Hi lnuyasha85. Thanks for picking the game up at launch – hopefully this gets you well beyond just 10 minutes. :) As far as expansion goes – I don\’t have anything to announce there yet. We\’re focusing on getting the game out in Europe, then we\’ll work on the much-requested demo – so that\’s our immediate plans. When I have something more concrete beyond that you can be sure I\’ll do another post. Thanks for the interest.

  • “Many of us would like to see custom PSN profile avatars, or new updated PSN profile avatars weekly like we do themes and wallpapers.”

  • I picked up the game yesterday in anticipation of the patch release adding trophy support. That’s a big selling point for me. Thanks for taking the time to add the patch. Do you think the patch will be available by next week?

    • Hiya Rendermonk. Sorry, I don\’t know – it depends on whether we missed anything critical in our submission. We did pretty extensive testing, so hopefully that\’s not the case, but we\’re also a small team. But like you I\’m hoping it\’s soon. Wish I could be more specific, but again it\’s in Sony\’s hands now (and for the record SCEA has been pretty efficient). And thank you for the support.

  • cant wait to get this game been putting it off but now im going to support yall and but it.

  • What’s NOVASTRIKE

    • Hi bigdaddyjane. You can read more about the basic gameplay on our website – http://www.tikigames.net – and under the media section you\’ll find some links to gameplay movies. But a quick answer is that it\’s a top-down free-roaming shooter where you combat both aerial opponents while also attacking (and defending) ground bases. All of the gameplay is objective-driven (defend colony, escort shuttles, destroy enemy base, etc). And this update coming out is addressing the primary complaints (such as the overwhelming difficulty) that the first release had while also adding trophies, customizable controls, and so forth.

  • Thanks for the info Kevin McCann! I haven’t picked up the game but I would like to support you since you guys are the first indie developer to release on the PSN. I also like your support for the game with this new update which sounds AWESOME! I’m almost over the fence about getting Novastrike!

But is this something you guys will add in the future or will it always be a single player game?

    Thanks guys!

    • Hiya LN_MEXWARRIOR. I\’m assuming that your question is with regard to multiplayer (it didn\’t clearly ask, but it mentioned single-player – so I\’m assuming that\’s your question).

With regard to cooperative play – it\’s something we very much want to do (and know it\’s the top-desired feature that\’s currently not in the game). That said it\’s a big undertaking for us, and we need to see how the update does (as well as the release in Europe). Understand we very much want to work on it, but we\’re also self-funded, so we need to make sure that it makes sense financially.

  • Hey Kevin!!

I LOVE Novastrike, glad to hear you’re following suit with a Trophy/Difficulty Patch. Great job!!

I have a question though. What advice do you have for a small/indy game devloper looking to have a project published on the PlayStation Network?

Thanks for your time…& looking forward to what Tiki Games has in store for the future of PlayStation.

    • Hi sarshelYam. Regarding getting a game published on the PlayStation Network – first you naturally need to apply to be a licensed developer for the PS3. The applicaton details can be found here:

      http://www.scedev.net/2bldev/

If you\’ve actually got a game you\’re working on and looking to get it on PSN then you can also send me an email at inquiry@tikigames.net and I\’ll try to provide a bigger overview – just put \”Publishing a game on PSN?\” as the subject. It is an involved process, and I don\’t mind trying to help those that are truly serious about trying to get a game on PSN.

  • since you are updating the store game to have the patch already… will you also update the preview video? a new video showing things like Trophies and updated ship would help.

    • Hello again, Captain Fury. Realistically I don\’t have time right now to update the original gameplay video on the store (or gametrailers.com). My wife asked me the same thing, but those videos take a couple days to put together, and while that might not sound like much time, I need to focus on the European release presently.

And I know the current trailers (including the one on PSN) are amateurish. I can say this because I did them – I had to play the game, capture the video, edit them, score them, and so forth. I have to wear a lot of hats with Tiki Games being so small – the only thing I haven\’t contributed to NOVASTRIKE is coding (which has been done my great lead programmer Shawn Baird).

At some point in the future I\’ll potentially look into updating the trailers – but right now I\’m still pretty busy with other things. Hopefully you understand.

  • Oh, and who let this thread fall under 4.7? 7 is my favorite number! I am outraged! :)

  • Huh. I’m surprised I missed this game when it first came out. I’ll definately be picking it up once the patch is released.

I too would like to thank you for actually reading and responding to the people who post here. Good luck to you Kevin and all of the guys at Tiki Games.

  • you guys may be a smaller game developer than some of the other big companies but I must say you put them to shame in a lot of places. You guys actually take the time to respond and listen to your fans, makes us feel like our opinions actually matter. You guys take feedback from your fans and make real changes that make your games better. Thats rare, and i commend you all for doing it, especially you Kevin, thanks a lot.

and on the flipside you guys make a pretty mean little game, especially for $10, and with this new patch you would have to be crazy not to pick up novastrike. I liked this game from way back but if I could I would buy it again to help support you guys and reward your efforts.

anyway thanks and keep going where ur going please.

  • Kevin,
Overall this looks like an interesting games. Please be sure to inform us when the update is up and ready to be patched and i’ll be sure to pick up. It reminds me of superstarstrike but more intense. I’ll wait for the update because after viewing the size of the ship; it just seems too small for me right now. That’s probably why the game is so hard for everyone. Just making the ship a bit biggger will probably assist people in getting further in the game and that alone will probably make a large difference in the ability to complete the game. Again, as I said earlier this looks to be a great game from the trailer and I will be purchasing it upon the update. Add me to your friends list for multiplayer if it’s considered later on at some point. PSN ID: berner1982.

    • Hi mr_berns1 – thanks for the comment and future purchase. I\’ll definitely be sure to have another post when the update goes live (to both let folks know and respond to feedback).

  • Kevin, a big thank you to you and your team I purchased Novastrike back in July along with 4 other games and Novastrike is the only one I currently don’t play because of the difficulty. I always thought if I was able to change the controls to fit my personal preferences, the game would be a bit easier to manage.
You’ve done it, and I thank you! The trophies are a a nice bonus, but the ability to play my own music is awesome. The invulnerability while spawning will also remove some frustration when playing the game. I am very much looking forward to playing Novastrike again.
    Thanks again!

    • Sure thing, Iambilly. Thanks for taking the time to post a comment – like you guys I\’m just waiting for Sony to let me know when the update will go live (which should be soon).

  • Great to hear about the patch, (I was expecting it earlier but without all this content). I’ll definitely be giving NS some more play throughs. The game was unrelenting on the easiest difficulty.

    • Hi again, KingTalo. It\’s a lot more forgiving now in RECRUIT and SOLDIER (especially RECRUIT). And yeah, originally the plan was to address the difficulty in an earlier update, but then we found out 2.4 was due out soon (trophy support), and there were other things we wanted to address (like customizable controls), so we decided to do an initial larger update. To break them into two separate updates would\’ve cost us some downtime, so it was a better use of our time just to put everything into a single update. Sorry for the extra delay it caused, but again it was more practical for us. Hope you enjoy the update.

  • Any update on when the patch may be available?

    • Hi wolverine81. No, but like you I\’m hoping it\’s soon now. Sorry I can\’t provide a more exact timeframe, but once I know it\’s passed I\’ll be sure to post on the blog right away.

  • When I read the interview with Tiki games on PSU, I knew that I had to get this game if just to support the little guys. As a game and software developer myself, I know just how trying it can be.

Though I wanted to get the game at launch, something held my hand (always some excuse, something else to grab instead), but when I read about the patch I went out (well not really, I sat in my chair), and bought Nova Strike.

On first play, the game is fun, except even on a 65″ TV, the player ship is tiny. I am glad to see that this is an issue that is being addressed in the patch.

I hope that the turning/aiming accuracy is addressed as well, as this (other than the tiny ship) was the only thing preventing me from really enjoying Nova Strike.

    • Hi there, the devilsjester. The main item we\’ve addressed for accuracy is the Shredder (the default air to ground weapon) – it now has a reticule, and locks onto ground structures much more reliably (with the reticule aiding further in seeing what target is being locked on). I\’m hoping the update is out soon, and when it is I\’d definitely like to hear your feedback after you\’ve played it some (I\’ll be setting up another blog post then). Have a good weekend.

  • hey kevin… any update on when this might be coming… already purchased and preparing for the trophies… i am addicted.. so please… Today, the 30th.. is my birthday.. please put out the patch today for trophies… please

    • Hiya DankandSticky. Unfortunately I don\’t know when the patch will hit, but I\’m hoping very soon now. As I\’ve stated in the last few replies as soon as the patch hits I\’ll do another blog post here to let the readers know (and respond to feedback on the patch). And happy birthday.

  • Kevin,

Thanks for the reply. I can’t believe you are still replying to comments. It’s not that I didn’t want a response, but it just surprised me that you were still paying attention to this post. Thanks for your time and dedication! By the way, I bought this game when it first came out and I’ve really enjoyed it. This patch is only gonna make it better!

    • Hi again, wolverine81. I definitely feel it\’s important to keep a presence, and while I\’m definitely more responsive on the initial few days the post goes live I still check back to see if there are any additional comments over time. Of course once the update goes live and there\’s a new post then I\’ll be focusing my attention there. And I\’m glad you\’ve been enjoying the game – hopefully it\’ll be moreso when the update goes live.

  • wow.. thank you very much Kevin, you have secured a customer for Tiki Games for life with me… thank you for showing that its more beneficial for developers to get down on our level and talk it out… thank you…

but cmon ;) could you give me a birthday present and say when it will hit… I would be extatic if it was sometime tonight or tomorrow.. thank you again for all your work..

  • and Kevin… I am a recent College grad looking to break into game advertising and marketing… I would love to help… Dankandsticky is my PSN or I could email you wherever… thank you so much..

    • Hello again, DankandSticky – I\’ll just use this to reply to both posts 136 and 137. Per when the update hits – again, I truly don\’t know. I\’m hoping it\’s very soon, and again I\’ll be posting on the blog the day it does.

And congrats on graduating college. I\’m not sure I can be too helpful there in looking into game advertising (I don\’t have a huge number of contacts there), but if you want to drop me a line at inquiry@tikigames.net I\’ll see if I can offer some help within the next week or so.

  • kevin, i’ve pre-purchased the game in antisipation of the coming patch. its good to see that you are concerned enough to keep everyone here as informed as possible.

i’ll be keeping a close eye on the blog for when you post and confirm the patches release.

    thanks again!
    jesse

  • hi kevin cant wait for the patch to bring me back but i would love if you guys could add some kind of survival mode or time attack mode to the game. sometimes i really dont fell like trying to play the story mode and would love for a quick 1-5 minute mode instead of the longer story missions.

    • Hiya ky181. Regarding having another mode – like survival or such – I agree. It\’s something that I wanted to originally have in the first release, but we simply didn\’t have the resources. That said it is something I still want to potentially address in the future, but it depends on how NOVASTRIKE sells overall. And in all open honesty it\’s not something I\’ve completely figured out yet, either (in terms of a good implementation). But again, it\’s something I want to do, it\’s right now we\’re still pretty busy with trying to get the game out in Europe. I\’m sorry for a fairly generic non-committal response, but I only want to do a survival type mode if we can do it right (which means it\’s not a quick implementation).

  • im for sure buying this when the patch is released i played it on my friends PS3 and loved it. can’t wait for the new patch and trophies ^.^

    • Hi AfroFish – thanks for the kind words. I\’m hoping the patch comes out really soon. And I\’m glad you enjoyed the game.

  • im stoked for the patch, and np man, i didn’t wait till the patch i bought the game asap when i got home haha. ( gotta get my skills up, to unlock them trophies ) lol ^.^

  • I am dying Kevin!!!!

with the push back of PAIN trophies!! sheesh, please let this be today please!!

    • I really wish I could say when it was going to be, but right now I\’m just waiting to hear that news myself. I\’m unfortunately no more \”in the know\” than you are at this point. :) But believe me, I hope it comes out as soon as possible too. Sorry I can\’t be of more help.

  • HAHA captain fury I feel your pain! delay on the pain trophies was a serious blow to my moral lol..

I too cant wait for the novastrike update…i mean literally I am itching for it!

My question is this.. Will the novastrike patch be released on psn during a store update? or will it just pop up and tell you to install when you start novastrike? wondering if there is hope for it next thursday or if it could just randomely show up?!

as far as the difficulty I never really found it TOO difficult I mean hard enough to be challanging but I think thats how a game should be.
When the patch comes out I will definetly be playing it on the same “stock” level..Anyway when im not in warhawk I like to play some novastrike to keep my skills sharp, you can bet I will be playing it nonstop when this patch is finally mine!

    • Hiya MidnightBlues.

We have two submissions in QA – one is a new store version (so new customers don\’t buy the game, download it, then need to download a massive update). The other is the update for existing owners. I believe the update isn\’t limited to coming out on Thursdays, but I\’m not sure about the store version. Sorry I can\’t be of more help there.

RECRUIT and SOLDIER have been tamed, of course, so while I think it\’s a good idea to start off on the difficulty you originally played, if you\’re finding it too easy then just jump to the next one. :)

  • Kevin i have a question for you.

will you be giving us a Trophy list ( on how to get the trophies ) before the patch is released ? or will we have to wait till the patch is released before what we have to do for the trophies?

    • Hi again, AfroFish. I\’m looking at having the trophy list released before the patch comes out. There are three hidden requirement trophies, but the other thirteen trophies will have their requirements detailed. And of course even the hidden ones will probably be discovered in no time and posted, heh.

  • Some good news, folks – the update is live now. I’ll be having another post on the blog tomorrow.

  • Hi Kevin, I have never seen this level of support for the customers from a developer before. Frankly I’m astonished. I really hope you and the rest of Tiki Games get rewarded for all of your hard work. I personally would like to thank you by giving your game a shot right now. (Downloading…) I will also tell my friends about it. Maybe they will give it a shot also. Thanks again Tiki Games!

    • Hi iNsOmNiaC4-2-0 – thanks for the support. I\’ve mostly been checking the most recent blog posting, so you\’re welcome to post your thoughts there. Hope you enjoy the game.
