Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

  • Let me get this straight…..the problems with 2.40 occur when installing the update? That’s when the system freezes and is from then on, according to X-play ‘broken’?

I have successfully downloaded 2.40 and have been using my system with no problems since Wednesday. Do I need to worry that it’s going to freeze now?

Is there any way to uninstall and revert to version 2.36? Do I even need to do that?

  • i feel a little gyped missing out on the update.
I understand that u want it to work properly, it just kills me that some got it while others didn’t. (me being 1 of them.) im just looking for a date to look forward to. listen.
    I NEED v.2.40!!
    NOW.

There is no official means to uninstall a firmware update. The software is stored in flash memory and the software updates are digitally signed by Sony. I’m afraid we’ll have to wait for Sony to release v.2.41.

Nice work Sony, release an update that kills your console.

Mine downloaded fine, and I had no problems on wednesday. But then on thursday when I turned my system on it said that my harddrive needed to be re-built. I clicked ‘ok’ as it was the only option and was then asked if I wanted to format my harddrive; obviously I said ‘no’, which brought up an error message that I couldn’t get out of. So, I turned it off and back on again and my harddrive had been wiped; everything was gone, all my game saves, downloads etc. Today I re-downloaded all of purchased items from the store, and then started re-downloading some videos. But the videos wouldn’t download, as they would get to 99% and then just say ‘pending’. So I turned the PS3 off again, and when I put it back on it asked if I wanted to re-build my harddrive again; just like before it deleted all my data from the harddrive.

So I guess my PS3 is [DELETED] now, if it’s gonne keep formatting itself all the time. Sony better give me a replacement because this update has screwed me over. All of those hours of gaming down the drain.

  • @1374 The question mark “?” also appears in the Reproduction List and in the Tiny Music Player Icon, but it’s weird because I’ve realised that it only happened with the new Themes (MGS4, GOW, Haze, Lair 1 and 2, Retro)and the ones that are right are (Original, Air Paint, Winter, COD4 PSN Theme), so it’s a shame, but I think that the 2.40 it’s a great update, but it needs to be polished.

    2.4.1 FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!!! PLEASE

  • ok way to waste my 4th of july not earning tropheez, thx soni

  • mine works just fine. haven’t had any problems. when are you gonna install in game private chats?????!!!!!!

  • @ 1402.

If you’re desperate, there are places on the web that you can get it unofficially. I certainly won’t say anything more because I understand why Sony pulled v2.40. You should too. Wait for v2.41.

It is now up to games developers to patch the games that we paid for.

What is this attitude from Infinity Ward? How much money did Activision make from CoD4 – and yet they’re refusing us patches?

Without patches, the v2.40 update has limited use. If you want to pressure anyone, start posting on games developer forums, because by the time they release a patch for anything, v2.41 will be available anyway.

  • hmmm, i’m not sure if i’m doing something dumb or not, but here’s what i’m experiencing: i downloaded 2.4 and it was running fine until i tried to play super stardust hd. i bought it, installed it, and it had an update and i tried getting but my internet connection was lost and the update was interrupted. once i fixed my internet issue i tried it again but this time it didn’t do the super stardust update and instead went to the game menu. so, now when i play and i try and get any of the trophies i’m not getting credit for any of them. i mean, the first one is to just finish the first level and i don’t get a trophy. anybody having this problem?

  • @ 1390 I’m sorry, I know its frustrating, for I wasn’t able to get the update either. However, people like this seriously need to grow up. Relax, for you will have hopeful full proof update when they release the fix.We do appreciate any updates from SONY though on the status :D

  • @fausty9: I would suggest to delete Stardust HD, redownload it from the store and install it again. Should fix the problem.

  • OK am sure PAIN was supposed to have trophy support where are they???

Has it not been patched yet i thought it was gonna have them from FW2.4 Day 1???

    I cant see any anywhere???

  • THESE THINGS MUST BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY:

    -PS2 game freeze at [game]boot
    -Bluetooth headset output crash
-Game crash when turning off bluetooth headset while in-game
    -improved exception handling

These bugs I’ve found with the new additions:

-I had an issue with the gamercard-whatever it-is where an added friend had a button permanently under their name “add friend”. When I tried adding them it said they were already a friend and their button remained

    Some suggestions:

-Remove “manage accounts from PSN Menu because you can do it from the triangle menu in contact list. Change PSN menu to “Playstation Store” with [subdirectories] (if you will) “Browse Store” and “View Cart”. Also, unpurchased cart item should save upon cart exit. Then on a PS3 with no user accounts (newly purchased system) in the create user “wizard” add the ability to make a PSN accnt. (if no internet connection exists then users can select option to create PSN accnt. from the triangle menu with active user selected in “Users” menu.
    – make “Shutdown” a button IN the menu rather than the subdirectory OF a menu <-(actually not sure if this is POLITICALLY correct, however it’s the most sensible way to put it, I think).
-remove chatroom completely, initiate chat inside the “friends” menu, this idea seems more logical when the cross game chat comes out, and since it’s only temporary until the release of home… (right?)
    – hide/toggle clock to prevent burn-in (excellent idea)
    -video playlists
    -XMB during BD playback
    – now that system sounds are introduced, a system sounds volume control which could also control the start-up sound (or not, whatever)
    – volume control overlay for games (much like the one accessible during video playback), or a simple volume control menu located within the black/white “Hold PS Button” menu.

..and some less practical additions that would be nice:

    -hard disk/usb/media card defragger
-integrate custom avatars (what about gravatar?)

    ————————————–

I suggest suspending developement of cross game chat until the current in-game bluetooth situation is remedied.

    ————————————–
I’ll repost this and update it too as things change.

  • @1410

the trophy developement stuff is probably suspended although I officially declare I know 0% of the truth of the matter, so nobody quote my [deleted]

  • @1409 (Nerix)

thanks for the suggestion but i’ve tried that a couple of time already. maybe you can answer this: when you played super stardust for the first time after you downloaded 2.4 (i’m assuming you were able to) it had an update of some sort, right?
if it did then that’s where i think the problem is on mine. that loss of internet connection during that update is where i think it went wrong on my ps3. ever since then, in the subsequent downloads i’ve attempted (after deleting it, as you said) it never prompt for an update anymore. pretty weird and total rubbish.

  • Ugh. Trying to get to messages now is a pain. There’s no way I should have to press Triangle and browse for the message list to see my messages. That’s way too much. It should, in the very least, be available from the profile that’s taken its place.

  • The Super Stardust HD update was taken down after the 2.4 update was taken down.

  • hey everyone…i did downlaod this update and it downloaded and installed ok..but all of the new symbols were questions marks…any one else have this problem or not?

  • @1415

thanks. that makes sense. how do you know this?

  • who me?

  • @1416

if you have a custom theme on the icons show up as question marks. try putting the original ps3 theme back on.

  • This is ****ing ridiculous. 2 Days later and still no 2.40?!?! It’s pretty damn messed up that some people are able to enjoy in-game XMB and some aren’t. Wake the **** up Sony and do something to fix this already.

  • ok ok…kl i’ll try that..thanks for the advice

  • @1416

the mountain dew theme and the new woodward theme support the new icons as well.

  • fausty9 thanks a lot..it worked

  • I hav one of the biggest problems. For starters, my games wont load the first time i try to play it. When it does load and i start the game and message appears saying an error has occured in the start operation.

Secondly when i eventually get the game to play after shuting down the system for 30 minutes, in game it will freeze and the screen will go black and not change.

Lastly, all my music and pictures got erased and i cant hear the sound effects in game. For example in call of duty 4 i cant hear i grenade go off or a gun being shot. Any suggestions?

  • All of this started after they took update 2.40 offline

  • I hate the in game xmb, is there a way to turn it off?

  • my pleasure cool_400

  • @1424

Backup save data and reformat the HDD. All you can do.

  • @1428

Uhh, how the hell u do that. im not good with that type of stuff.

  • @1426

It only takes like 1 minute to navigate through every available menu and… no, not without reverting to a previous FW

  • Hey yall!

I still have not issues with the firmware 2.40 and SuperStardust HD…but one lockup when trying to run Pixel Junk Monsters. I had to hold down the reset button. Other than that no issues. I have a 60 GB refurb PS3. My first PS3 did not play GTA4…so sony did a free exchange for me.

  • @1429

Use the backup utility in the PS3 to save your game data to a USB flash drive or external HDD. Then use the utility to format the HDD. Then copy your save data back.

  • I would like to know if you plan on upgrading the web browser that is on the PS3. In my honest opinion its completely pathetic, you guys should try to get your hands on the Mozilla Firefox browser and see if you can get that installed on the PS3, that would actually make the browser functionality useful.

  • @1432

    in enlish dude

  • I think that maybe Sony should offer something for free like when xbox live was messed up and we got a undertow for free. Maybe they should give us super stardust HD for free, but I highly doubt that they will.

  • That was in english dude…..oh, and it’s spelled english. :P

  • @1434

you plug a storage media into the ps3… you navigate to settings and select backup, after backing up you gotta select (within settings menu) “format” and after all that is complete, you copy the stuff from the external storage media back to your ps3.

  • …and possibly delete the data for the games that are giving you trouble before backing up?

  • odfrido, what woollard said was pretty standard. go to the ‘settings’ icon in your xmb. scroll down to system settings and click on it. somewhere in those options is the “backup utility” option. that’s where you use the usb flash drive woollard was talking about. it’s one of those portable memory sticks that are pretty standard knowledge now. backup all your info to that and then restore your hard-drive to its original state. whereupon, you transfer the info you saved on the flash drive back to your ps3 and everything should be okay. easy stuff, but i guess it can get a little jargon-y.

  • @1434

also try plugging the A/V cord in further…

  • haha, thetruefiziks, you could be totally right about that. it’s probably that simple a problem.

  • @1420 you need to relax. sony is probably doing what they can to avoid any further problems for its users. being an impatient and petulant child isn’t going to make things go any faster.

  • i have a issue with 2.40 my mic does not work and i have tried 3 different ones. and sometimes will not access the media bar from in game but hopfully sony will fix it on the other side if it works right it is a great update

  • Wow Sony, great way to lose players for 4th of July weekend. I figured I wouldn’t get to trophy compare all weekend. I’m tired of defending you Sony, I really am. I have 2 friends who purchased PS3’s uopn seeing 2.40 and now they can’t even download the update. Thanks… Thanks a lot.

  • WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD ANYTHING? WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO GET THIS UPDATE OUT FOR ALL OF US WHO HAVEN’T GOTTEN IT YET? IS THIS SOME MYSTERY OR ARE YOU GOING TO LET US KNOW SOMETHING? I’M FRUSTRATED WITH THE FACT THAT YOU JUST LEAVE US HANGIN WITHOUT ANY WORD AS TO WHEN THIS SITUATION WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF.

  • @ 1442

Blindly defending Sony on an issue they announced would be ready and then took down a day later cause they screwed up just makes you seem like a crazed fanboy.

I don’t own an xbox or a wii and have been supporting PS brand since the beginning, but this is just screwed up. They should not be left off the hook by people saying, “It’s ok, they are trying to get it right” when they should have got it right in the first place.

  • @1444

Wow dude that’s a sad comment. There’s no point in b*tching about a failed update. Sh*t happens. If you’re so pissed about it you could always grab a 360 and play duck duck goose with the rest of the babies.
