Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

  • I updated and now its laggin like mad i cant play MGO now.

  • @Gamesblow

I suggest you read the patents that i posted on page 13… you might not be so willing to believe MS after youve read documented proof on the US Patents’ office official website.

    Thanks

  • @842

If you have worked in the industry so long and haven’t heard what a 2nd party is to gamers on forums it basically means

“an independent developer who chooses 1 platform”

Might not be the technical name for them but that’s what we like to call them, only I’m not actively in the industry like you are big shot.

  • @845

You’re not going to believe me eitherway but time will show you I was right and you should have.

So why bother trying to make you believe me any futher?

    It’s pointless.

  • This webpage explains that developers won’t include trophies or they are going to wait until they finish their current projects.

    http://www.ps3fanboy.com/category/news/

  • I downloaded via PS3 just 1h after it was released. It’s working fine… apart the clock being under the battery icon -_-

  • @801

for starters those aren’t my ideas , I got them from a website that had some good ideas and I just went ahead and copied them, and in-game web browing is a good idea, why wouldn’t it be

  • @845

I’ve been known to be privy to stuff before and I talk actively to guys at PSM and other publications all the time.

  • on the ps3fanboy website in the news section, it says that developers arent going to patch trophies or they will wait until they finish their current projects.

  • @844 gamesblow

It wouldn’t be difficult at all. They already have the achievements defined. The 360 savegames and PS3 savegames both store the same kinds of variables to track your trophy/achievement stats. They may not be the same variable names, but a integer tracking how many headshots you’ve got in a 360 game would be the same as an integer tracking how many headshots you’ve got in a PS3 game.

As we say in computer science – “Plug and chug”. A high-schooler could do it.

  • so it looks like we’re all in for a long wait for trophies.

  • After visiting a very famous Portuguese topic about repaired PS3’s it seems there was a single person with any kind of problem concerning the 2.40 update. And believe me, considering all the buzz that was weird, I believe the failure rate for this problem was less than 1/1000, or even less.

  • Reposted for you benefit Gamesblow:

These are the two relevant patent numbers (IMO the second one is the one thats causing sony problems)

go to the patent office website (uspto.gov), do a quick search, and then enter in one of the numbers.. if this doesnt work ill get the direct link (the link is really long so i thought this method would work out better)

  • I would like to make it very clear that I would love for trophy support to become the big thing. I think, even on stardust a game I don’t really like, it’s awesome. I see the potential and I see the drive. I love Sony’s incorporation for this service, but I don’t think this is going to take off for 3rd party developers for the reasons I have listed and have been told.

Achievements are pinned to xbox live and cannot move cross platform. So you can’t have blow 10 police cars up on xbox 360 and blow 10 police cars up on Ps3.

the developers cannot mix and match their requirements for each system.

  • @ SpyroLuver88;

The Sixaxis, minus the remote control, was fully conceptualized when the PS1 was out.

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep8DRXJpA9Q

Whether they bought out the company or just the technology, I don’t know.

  • soz for the triple post but I mean only some developers arent going to do trophies not all of them.

  • Gamesblow, you don’t even know what you are talking about. If you don’t know the difference between a copyright and a patent, then how can you even ask an intelligent question on the topic? You got a meaningless answer because your question was stupid.

  • I updated and now its laggin like mad i cant play MGO now.

Just to say im on 60Gig

  • @853 gamesblow
Ah. So you have “friends who work in the business”

    Gotcha.

  • Those who have installed v2.4 and haven’t yet used all the new features it has to offer, can’t say everything works fine .
I’m sure the majority of us P3 owners didn’t buy our consoles purely out of curiosity to see what firmware updates have to offer. My point being: NOT MANY OF YOU WILL EVER BE SATISFIED. “WANT, WANT!”

Rather quick to criticise, still biting the hand that FEEDS! Buy an Xbox then and suck up to Gates!!

  • @gamesblow

I apologize for adding to the number of posts challenging you, but i would really like you to read those patents and then explain to me how they dont exist.

    Thanks again

  • @859 gamesblow

They can’t be moved DIRECTLY. 360 and PS3 runs on different code. But the CONCEPT and the EXECUTION are EXACTLY THE SAME.

Say the 360 has an achievement for, like you said blowing up 10 cars. All you have to do is add the same check statement to see if you’ve blown up 10 cars in the PS3 version, add a trophy if the condition is met, and patch it in. You don’t even have to come up with new trohpies/achievements in the games.

If trophies are so impossible to add in, then why does the 360 and PC have the same achievements for Portal and Team Fortress 2. They have the EXACT SAME achievements. See? It’s not only possible, IT’S ALREADY BEEN DONE.

    It’s that simple.

  • As I said guys

Trophy support will be, in the end, a Ps3 exclusive games only feature. Wait and see. I know it.

When Konami jsut sold 3 million copies in 2 weeks of a game and they say they don’t have plans to support Trophys? What is thaT?

No way are Trophys going past Sony exclusive games. Sure we’ll see some 3rd party games… I’m sure Alone in the Dark will have them, burn out is getting them but I bet no more than 20% of 3rd party will have it.

  • @ gamesblow;

I’m not going to call you a liar because I don’t know; All I can do is use articles. I’m not connected to too many game developers.

What I can find online is that currently 70% of games have trophies.

    http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/3326.html

Games like Uncharted will get it, but not now *(seeing they are probably busy making Uncharted 2)

    http://news.filefront.com/sony-to-fully-support-devs-with-patching-trophies-into-games-uncharted-getting-trophies-soon-while-super-stardust-has-them-now/

    http://gamercenteronline.blogspot.com/2008/01/uncharted-2-is-coming-says-christophe.html

So I’m not trying to refute your letters, but what I am saying is that I can read these articles for myself where the developers themselves or others in authority stated so.

  • @782 Gamesblow

I have to second PhoenixBlack can you dispute those patents and then tell me they do not exist

  • @ 852
When I game I won’t be looking at my email or the weather… thats why its a bad idea. It would be a good idea if it would be easy to implement. It looks like its not, so they better invest time in something usefull…

  • @866

    ahahah

Why do those games have the same? Well, Microsoft Games for windows live and Microsoft 360. you do the math.

As I said, they are basically tied to the systems not the software. The achievements system is a Microsoft application and feature… You can’t have the same ones.

CIv Rev taught me this cause this is exactly what they told me.

  • And what about those, who’ve installed this update, but still having problems with mic and etc?

  • @868

I can’t say eitherway, I’m not an attorney and odds are neither are none of you. I can just go off what I was told via e-mail from an offical rep of Microsof.

    Sorry.

  • @872 I actually am a patent attorney

  • @870 gamesblow

Portal and Team Fortress 2 are Microsoft Games? Last I checked they were made by Valve. Let me check again. Yep! They’re still made by Valve.

Achievements in Portal and Team Fortress 2 are tied to you STEAM account. Not to anything Microsoft.

  • I’ve looked through loads of posts and haven’t found anyone with the same problem as me.

I got the update yesterday and ever since then my avatar isn’t showing in the “Friends” list (I now have the default grey face instead of my choice). If I press X to go to the profile, it shows my avatar.

I have been to my account management options and chose the “use current” avatar in the hope it would update. It re-appeared until I restarted my PS3, now it’s gone again.

  • @873

Then there ya go. You tell me, is it possible? I never questioned the link or the pics or the docs I questioned Sony’s intent and went for my own answers. Big difference.

  • @867 gamesblow

Konami says they’re not adding trophies? Got a source for this? Link? Or is it another one of your “friends in the business”?

  • @ gamesblow

i am not an attorney. But i am not an idiot either. i am not a raging fanboy, but i am no fair weather fan either.

I’m the educated consumer who took the time to look up documented evidence. Who are you? the guy who believes everything you see in an email?

(ps my tone is not as derisive as you might think)

  • @874

Valve makes them but they make them for who?

Microsoft games for windows LIVE & Microsoft xbxo 360. Valve had nothing to do with the Ps3 ports of those games. At all.

As I said, and now being redundant about, Microsoft owns the achievement system, as apparently they own the music system. This means developers cannot use the same requirements for their games in getting points for XBL or Trophies for PSN.

    It’s pretty simple, actually.

“Portal and Team Fortress 2 are Microsoft Games? Last I checked they were made by Valve. Let me check again. Yep! They’re still made by Valve.”

Not on the PS3, on the PS3 it is made by EA… or is it Valve, or both, or none… looks like the last option. They don’t know. I.E. no trophies for Orange Box, THATS for sure!

  • I installed 2.40 just after midnight July 2 with no problems what so ever. I had Super Stardust HD already on my PS3 and added the new Add on to it. I played the game all night and day as I have this week off and have seen the features that Sony reported were coming with this update. I like the update and congratulate Sony for how they are supporting the people that this isn’t working for. As well, they’re shut the download off for now until they can figure out the problem of the few that it’s not working for. Most people are appreciative, however, I see some here on the blog that can’t be satisfied with anything that Sony does. We’ve just seen the start of this great console with more to come. Being a programmer previously, I know the problems that can happen once an update is out. The real test of the code is when it goes live and ok there are a few bugs apparently here, but they’re working with you to resolve them. I congratulate Sony and the developers for what we’ve been given so far and can only say keep up the good work. I sure hope you don’t have to spend your July 4th day fixing the problem, but have seen many programmers working late nights and weekends to resolve this stuff. Thanks again Sony !

  • “Achievements are pinned to xbox live and cannot move cross platform. So you can’t have blow 10 police cars up on xbox 360 and blow 10 police cars up on Ps3.”

Devil May Cry4 accomplishment’s on the PS3 = DMC4 360 achievements. The bronze, silver, platinum thing was probably done to skirt around the achievement issue. So yeah you could have blow up 10 cars on both systems as the PS3 blow up 10 would be a bronze trophy.

That being said, I do agree that trophy support for the next sixth months or so will be pretty tepid as the sdk would have came too late from any games so close to going gold if they haven’t already. You really can’t tell whether trophy support will become widespread in the future as a lot of it will depend on whether developers see a noticeable uptake in SuperStardust sales, etc.

“The 360 savegames and PS3 savegames both store the same kinds of variables to track your trophy/achievement stats.”

I’m not sure trophies work the same way. I think it might be synchronized with the game data file/psn/system data file as opposed to a save file since most save files on the PS3 are easily transferrable.

  • Any updates on who intends to provide trophy support for games that have already been released would be extremely nice, thanks.

Also, any chance on the next firmware update to allow streaming audio from the in-game XMB? I have nearly 100gb of MP3s and don’t want to clutter up my HDD with them.

  • @ 879
But the achievements is GTA4 on the 360 are the same as on the PS3. Only difference is that you don’t get any award for them on the PS3… Or am I wrong?

  • @878

What in the hell are you talking about? I am not questioning the damn patent!!!! I am questioning SONY on it!!!! Learn this if you are so educated it’d be simple.

Forget the damn patent! This is about the Trophy system and you all keep bringing up the music patent???

  • @ 883
    jqtaxpayer | July 3rd, 2008 at 11:31 am

I doubt streaming audio is a good idea, I mean: how will it inflict on your internet connection during online play?

  • Bugs found on 2.40 (what I noticed…)

    Major
+ Theme icons not applied on XMB (in-game XMB is fine)
+ Accessing your own profile under Friends does not synchronize your trophies. Trophies should be synchronize upon receiving one, and only once, not every time we access Games > Trophies

    Minor
+ New Clock should be formatted based on Time settings (ex:YYYY-MM-DD)
+ Battery icon when while in-game XMB shouldn’t hide the Clock!

  • @876 I don’t have a problem with you trying to find out an answer. That was a good idea. What I rudely was trying to imply before was that the answer you received in your email suggests that the question you asked was wrong. It is absurd that you could copyright something like this, because copyrights don’t protect things like that. However Microsoft does have issued patents on subject matter that seems to cover custom soundtracks in games. Based on a reading of the scope of the claims in these patents, other companies like Sony would have to find a work around that doesn’t infringe on the claims of these patents. Or they could try to invalidate the patent by finding prior art that discloses this method some time before the filing date of the patent applications.

  • @884

no, the in game stuff is the same… Xbox live has their own achivment system that requires a wealth of other task for the points.

I will, one again, say this.

Civilizations Revolution has 50 achievements to obtain on the xbox 360. The Ps3 has 0 trophies to obtain because the system came too late for them to implement task and requirements different from the xbox 360’s. Add to this they weren’t totally sold on trophies to begin with.

  • @ gamesblow

Valve did all versions of their game. There was no secondary developer.

And developers can use the same requirements for getting achievements as they do trophies. There is just a minor coding difference between the ps3 and 360 to trigger the same event.

    As you say,

    It’s pretty simple, actually

  • @ HookedonTronics

your a 360 troll send bigfnrabbit a friend request and ill whoop u at any game!!!

  • ” I never questioned the link or the pics or the docs I questioned Sony’s intent and went for my own answers. Big difference” –Gamesblow

You darn well denied the patent idea hence why you sent an email trying to confirm otherwise. Your email and the response is a clear verification at the email you sent asking about the patent in question. Sorry Sentry you were right all along I apologize for doubting had to look for myself to confirm.

  • I am not a lawyer or anything, but looking at those patents by ms, there seems to be a way round it. The patents state music held on the hard disk or drive.

So does this mean the patent doesnt cover in game soundtracks streamed from a media server?

As i said im not a expert and could be wrong.
