Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

xbox funs re pissed off because they cant even play blue ray disks they still have dvd Roms loooooooool

  • tristian talking about trolls (for or against the system) lol 20+ post in a single thread along with gameblows and touchy ed

  • @ Tristan

I’ve been e-mailing people left and right, man. I’ve got some good responses too I’m stock piling Snaps in my photobucket and am going to make a forum post over at the official forums to back up my claims.

Sony needs to be straight with us as to

1 – Why we can’t have in game music if Microsoft is saying they’re not under any legal obtainer.

2 – Why 3rd party developers are not as on board with Trophy’s as Sony wants us to think they are.

3 – Is Trophy support a test to see how consumers react and if it will inadvertently just become what I am under the suspicion it is. A PS3 games only exclusive. Meaning, any 3rd party game that supports achievements won’t support trophy’s cross platform.

C’mon Sony we pay money for your services, least you can do is let us know what services are still viable to us.

“of course its a big deal
what 360 gets universal music and ps3 the better console gets crappy developer choice which is going to be soo limited i mean rockstar wont patch gta iv do you know how bad that is…”
    I could care less…

“That would be like saying PS3 fanboys have a slogan: Everything But Games!”
That was fun like a year ago… when the 360 had like 4 more games or so… I don’t miss Halo or Queers of War also…

Its absurd to think MS doesn’t have a patent on this. Its even more absurd to think MS would discus this with you over mail without putting out some FUD with it. Like Sony is totally retarded and do think the hard way because they want. You really think Sony cannot do this the 360 way? Absurd.

If any company disrespects the way artists see their music distributed it is MS…

You have now idea what you are talking about. Browsing the web while you game? WTF? With what purpose?

And if pushing a button to confirm the update is to much for you, you do it all the time when you game…

  • Both of my PS3’s are doing just fine with the patch! They have both been previously replaced so maybe it’s just older models being affected.

  • waaaaaay too much heat towards sony for this. granted, this didn’t go nearly as well as they expected and it’s not nearly as good as we hoped but…

bugs happen all the time, whatever caused the problems with SOME machines may not have been forseeable. obviously it’s not JUST a problem with the update, since many have updated successfully and are using the limited features that 2.4 offers us.

unfortunately now it will be up to game devs to support the features that 2.4 offers. they will have to patch their games to offer custom music via in-game xmb. SONY, wasn’t there any way this could have been done from your end? couldn’t you have made a way for the PS3 to interrupt the game’s soundtrack and insert music from the HDD??? this was the only thing i was disappointed about with 2.40.

that said, i think you guys have a fantastic machine in the PS3. some of us want to see it BEAT what the 360 offers. please work hard to make that happen.

  • I have been having problems after i downloaded the firmware. My ps3 turns off automatically after i having been playing for around 10 minutes.

  • gamesblow if this helps you look for patent NO.: 6981918 looks to be held my M$

  • @804 jcbry
    Really ? :)

  • I missed the update, and found it online. Not sure if I should install it via USB Flash Drive or just wait for the update to be re-released by Playstation.

From what I have read, only a very, very small percentage of people have even had an issue with the update.

Of those people, I wonder how many were user errors and/or just idiots.

For the most part, people seem to have not had one problem with the install.

    Thoughts??

Any ETA on when the firmware will be released, if I choose to wait?

    Thanks in advance.

  • The PS3 works great for me, but after the update, my need for speed prostreet constantly freezes… =[ I know its a glitchy game but it wasn’t like this before the update. Other than that the update is great… hopefully ea releases a patch for ProStreet.

  • BTW, I wish Playstation would allow us to upload our own PSN online avatars. Even if that means going through a 3rd party site like they do here (gravatar.com).

It would allow for more customization to the system.

  • @803 I agree.

  • Looks like I’ll be missing out on it when I finally get my PS3 next week. Oh well.

I guess the update should be here this week…

  • Gamesblows look like which ever M$ division you went for your information on them holding patents is wrong! If you need any further assistance continue posting some bs.

Sony moderators come on ban him and the other two the community knows who and what they are about ban these gentlemen.

  • I had the chance to get the update and looks prety neat… I haven’t had any issues so far… and in gameplay I switched from mgs4 with no issues at all…

Anyway I hope any possible issue will be fixed soon

  • I’m as much a Sony fanboy as anybody else, but please please please stop spelling Microsoft or MS with a dollar sign.

  • @ Juben

My information is legitimate. You just don’t wanna accept it. I have e-mails for proof on this. you want to ban 3 of us here, why?

So you can continue walking on rose pedals and mis and mesh opinions with others who love status quo around here?

Heaven forbid “3” of us actually have an opinion on what we want from Sony. Hey, I am a loyal supporter of Sonys. I’d love for Sony to check my HDD and see just how much money I have sunk into the Ps3… I ahve every right to come here and toss out my opinion and make suggestions and ask important questions.

    for instance:

Why is trophy support not being widely accepted by 3rd party?

IS trophy support going to be relegated to a Ps3 only games feature?

Those are important questions. Sorry you don’t think they are. Sorry you don’t agree with my take on things. Sorry you’re upset because the ps3 isn’t all that is was said to be for us consumers. More importantly the consumers who paid 600 bucks for it at launch and waited in lines for.

  • @ 815 seafea
hahaha yeah man ,you are right

  • this is dumb. why does sony always tease us. mine works fine i guess. i mean i have only tried on game. COD4. and it works great. get your crap together fellez
    e

  • I got the update yesterday around noon EST installed fine progress was a bit slow on the process but rather than panic and cut the power for what I might have perceived as a hang I just switched back to regular TV and waited for the console to reboot. Once it was done system restarted and everything was as it shoulda been. As for any ill effects after the fact I’ve seen little to none so far.

The only thing that comes to mind that may qualify is that I had ONE instance of where I tried to shut the system down and it caused the triple beep time out shutdown. Despite that nothing else seem amiss. I’ve had no problem with any disconnects and I’ve played plenty of MGO since I updated so pretty sure everything is fine.

Over all its a bit disappointing that they had to recall the upgrade but I certainly wouldn’t call it a failure cuz those of us that managed to get it before it was pulled most of us seem to have no problems stemming from it. The update itself was pretty much everything they said it would be.

For those that missed out or got fubared these things happen sony is likely busting their collective humps to iron out the kinks just have a bit of patience….then again patience is a virtue the human race seems to have lost in this day and age so I guess ya can’t please everyone.

@ 780 the integral podcast show of MGS4 does pretty blatantly say that you will be able to use yer own music through the in game ipod which I assume was in reference to the forthcoming functionality. However given that the update didn’t go off without a hitch I wouldn’t expect any sort of patch from konami being released until after the bugfix edition of the firmware upgrade is available.

Seem way more logical to just wait rather than release a patch to cater to the people that got the first update rather than just wait for everyone to be on the same page instead of releasing before and after patches.

  • Though I was a bit disappointed when I logged on last night and went to system update and was told I had the latest, kudos to Sony for at least admitting there was an issue and taking the time to resolve it. Knowing my luck, I would have had the problem if I was able to download it. So, hopefully now it’ll be good to go when I can actually get it.

  • Oh man there are to many lame comments here. Iam not sure why half of these guys are here.

*Please make another post telling us when we will get the 2.40 update.*

  • I hope they toss up 2.41 and fix my laggy xmb. On psn games it’s fine, but when you use a disc based game it’s almost game over. It lags and dips so bad it’s not even worth… oh wait, the whole update wasn’t.

    Nevermind.

Truth is, my icons are slow to load and it’s laggy when you navigate the xmb.

  • @816

Do you have any information indicating that trophies will not be widely supported by third parties? You do realize that this feature hasn’t even been active for over 48 hours yet, right? I think it’s a little early to declare that developers aren’t supporting it.

Do you have any information that suggests that trophy support is going to be a PS3-only games feature? I’m not sure what you mean by that to be honest… I mean trophies are going to be a Wii or 360 feature. Do you mean PSN games only? Or exclusive to titles that are PS3 exclusive?

Could you post your sources for this info?

  • lol@ limited number of calls. my brothers ps3 bricked (80gb motorstorm), and so did mine (MGS4 ed.). same house, two busted ps3’s. this is the *THIRD* time his ps3 is going in for service. Two faulty powersupplies the first two times.

what an awesome company. no wonder no one wants to develop for it.

  • @824 Your PS3 isn’t bricked. The issue is that the hard drive gets corrupted for a small number of users. Your PS3 and hard drive are both fine in the long run. You’ll just have to end up either reformatting, or doing something to repair the hard drive.

  • Just for the record, my PS3 is doing fine after the update. The in-game XMB and trophies are great! Best update ever IMHO. Thanks Sony!

My PSN id is xkillerp7, add me if you want to compare trophies, I already got some on Super Stardust HD and I plan on hunting more of them when patches are released for my games.

On a side note, my system froze once while I was trying to read a received message (I was in-game). But it has happened only once, and I exchanged tons of messages yesterday with everything working fine, so I believe it was just a common freezing (they happen to me once in a while anyway), not a big deal.

  • GAMESBLOW
“C’mon Sony we pay money for your services, least you can do is let us know what services are still viable to us.”

Just to point this out — we do NOT pay for the playstation network. If you buy games on it, then you pay for that. Other than that, PSN is FREE.

  • A question and an answer:

What will happen to people (and save data) who consoles actually bricked?

Why people aren’t currently supporting trophies is because they are busy making games. It may be updated later, but now they’re busy.

  • i already installed 2.40. so, why this update 2.40 r offline? many people who got ps3 died from 2.40 update. not me. my ps3 doing good. its almost 1 yrs

  • @828 — I agree pizelsword. This is just opening up the in-game stuff. There will be patches that will update in-game music etc.

  • The update 2.4 download/install was smooth sailing for me. IT does everything that was described in the two part videos, and I am really digging it.

It’s unfortunate for the few of you that has a problem. I hope Sony can address the issue quickly

    SPARDA

  • Pixelsword

No, sorry. I have several e-mails and phone calls from companies who have no plans to support Trophy’s at all this year and some even said never.

As I said, I bet you outside of a few 3rd party games, Trophy support will be dependant on Sony’s in house and 2nd party.

Wait and see. Wait and see.

  • @ straylight;

Is that why Bungie Left Microsoft?

  • I have an 60 GB model and mine is just fine i think it was a good idea for Sony to bring the firmware down i hope will it is down them make change some things like the slow loading but it is a great start

  • They should at least update us to tell us they found out what was wrong, and it’ll be a day or a week to we fix it..

  • I guess the US patent office is just wrong and did you even go to their legal division please tell me you did not go to some random “source.”

Support or Hate on sony I could careless. Your attack on others is what annoys me when reading this blog. Sure you have your opinions but you do nothing to follow policy(“Comment Policy”) and I’m here just to point that out and I think I’d enjoy reading the blog a little more with out you being here and correcting you on your “letters” giving out bad information.

Back on topic Ridge racer worked out just excellently was able to use txt message while playing the game well pausing it anyway. Another thing I did not notice is how clean game looks on TV and colors work better than GT even though GT is a much more indepth game but thats just my opinion.

  • Hey JCBRY, I agree.

In fact, whoever here has the original 60g and found once 2.36 was on that GTA 4 (and now anytime you turn on your PS3) first drop controller control and then a minute later freezes about ten minutes after turning it on, REPLY and Say I.

Key links to agree with me here because the sony support reps “claim” in their condescending way that they have not received many calls on this:

    * Orig 60g

    * GTA 4

    * 2.36

    * 10 minutes of play and then FREEZE

Let them hear us in volumes folks so they can get the wax outta their ears!

  • @832 gamesblow
Do you have any evidence of this? I mean something more substantial than your bets.

Do you have a link to an offical statement from these companies saying that they do not plan to support trophies? Or are you asking us to take your word for it that you called them and asked them?

  • Just like when some of the gamers who had defective downloads of the new firmware where it seemed like the customer rep on the phone didn’t know what they were talking about — i’m sure that all the people in these companies do not have the info about what may be implimented in the future. Sometimes certain departments know things before other departments.

  • I have snaps of all my e-mails in my photobucket and I ahve a reccording of 3 phone calls. I’m going to post a thread on the offical forums to see what they think about it and what their thoughts are.

So, check out my bucket or read the thread. Thanks.

  • @Patrick Seybold

    Boss,

I looked, and I’ll be buggered if I can find a way to turn off the new clock feature. Should I have picked a different week to stop snorting komodo dragon venom, or is it really not there?

  • Gee GAMESBLOW

I have worked in the Gaming Industry for almost 10 years and I have never heard of 2nd party. It’s either 1st party(made by Sony) or 3rd party(not made by Sony) what the heck is 2nd party?

I think Sony is great for admitting the update had a few issues for some(mine, my brother’s, my cousin’s and my neighbor’s all work perfectly) and pulling it so they can figure out what is causing it. Good Looking Out, Sony;)

There are a few people out there saying Sony copied XB360 achievement points…I also have to say this industry has always “borrowed” technology from other companies. Can you say vision camera *cough* I mean EyeToy…lol Or maybe you like this one, Scene It…I mean Buzz! Considering the Wii and the PS3 were being developed at the same time, who’s to say who had the motion sensored controller first? Nintendo made the 64 controller resemble a PS2 controller…the list goes on and on. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. I guess to me it’s not about who made it first but who makes the best use of it:)

  • I download it on the 1st of July and I had no problem playing it. It Installed just fine and more so I love the new features.

  • It is to my understanding that Trophy’s will become an incentive to buy 1st and 2nd party games, not 3rd party.

1 reason I was given on the Civ Rev situation was this.

“Xbox 360 will get 50 achievements for their version of our software and we have no plans to incorporate any trophy support into the Ps3 version. Achievements are specifically tied and exclusive to the xbox 360 system and cannot be crossed over to other platforms for use; you would most undoubtedly have to make a new set of requirements for these trophies”

It went on but that’s the gist of it. Do you understand now why most dev’s won’t bother with trophies? They just can’t import the same requirements for both version. They would/will have to give Sony their own and Microsoft their own.

This is where 3rd party says no to Sony and yes to Microsoft because they are unified and have been since launch.

    Sad but true guys.

  • @840 gamesblow
So what would stop you from just typing out your own e-mail and photoshopping the companies names into the from section? You wouldn’t even need Photoshop for that… Just MSPaint.

What would stop you from making these phone recordings with a friend?

You do realize that recording someone over the phone without their knowledge and consent is illegal in most states, right?

I realize that you might be telling the truth, but all of the evidence you claim to have can be very easily faked.

This isn’t just me guessing either. I’m dead certain some guy who answers the phone at [insert game developer here] wouldn’t consent to you recording their converstations.

  • If they don’t fix this problem for free to people without a warranty Sony is going to loose major points
