As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.
well. i didnt get to see if it works in my system. it will be a good idea if you put it back on today to see if those who havent tried to download it and install it could see if works on theis systems. i never had a problem installing an update. so come on put it back on.
Since I installed the update, it tends to freeze whenever I hit the PS button to access the XMB as soon as I start a game. Other than that, it works just fine
Anyway, I’ve blabbed on long enough.
Just one last comment then I’m off to Vegas for a .NET convention (as exciting as that sounds!)
Here it is:
It’s possible to enjoy and support the PS3 without being blind to its faults.
NEVER allow yourself to become so attached to your beliefs that you become blind to the world.
son just hold onto the firmware until you have wrote a universal game music player.
flame me all you want you know i’m right
@749 TouchyEd
Good luck on your .NET convention
Cheers man
Let’s all remember that this is all FREE. There is no charge for these features, and there is no charge to play online.
Does anyone know if you can update a EU PS3 with FW from the US website? FW isn’t localized, is it?
@ 749
People still using .NET??
@ 762
Maybe they should start taking a monthly fee from us users? If Sonys’ services will improve, I’ll gladly pay the price…
Should we all expect a version 2.41 update?
I have already installed v2.40 on my machine. I have not played my machine after the install. I am concerned that there may be some issues remaining that might cause a problem. I assume that would require the update to be re-released as v2.41 so that all who have already updated can update again to assure a smooth experience.
Am i correct?
#754
Are you joking?
C# and the .NET Framework is the backbone of the Windows platform.
It’s probably the most widely used development platform on the planet.
@ Everyone who wants to pay for PSN
So, you think paying Sony will give you guys all the FW features you want and FW will never mess up a PS3? I fail to see what paying for PSN has to do with this discussion… You can pay me instead!
@ 755 — I was thinking about that, too. But think of this. For what we have here, it’s pretty damn good. People compare this to X-box 360s online (the one you have to pay for); though, once this firmware is up and running and some patches are in place, it is going to rival 360s online. And it’s free <- this is the most important fact.
@ 757
Ah, yeah… Windows ;-)
my update is good so far hope you guys can get the update for the other people going a.s.a.p thanks sony ….capeles
I am new to this blog. I have a 80g PS3 and downloaded the update on tuesday night. Have not had a issue yet. However, because i paid for my PS3 when it was still $599, i would be HIGHLY pissed if this error would cause me to have to delete all my files. Sh*t that you pay that much for should always WORK. Gas is way too much to have to pay for shipping on even drive my system to FEDEX to have it fixed. When i get home from working TWO jobs just to live, i should be able to sit back and play my $600 system without it failing. FIX IT SONY!
Yeah I installed the firmware yesterday and I have no problems with it so far. Just thought I would add my two cents.
Well further to my post on comment page 13, i changed by network settings from wired to wireless. Now it seems i can watch streamed videos (altho with still some stuttering). Still seems to drop connection to psn tho, but streaming is better, which is weird as wired should be faster as i have 1 gig switches and ethernet cards. My internet browser still doesnt work and crashes the ps3. Still stuttering in games too. Weird how that connecting wireless at 54mbps is quicker than connecting wired at 1000mbps…. This problem has only existed since i installed 2.40. Hope sony fix it for us who already have 2.40 installed too. Getting very annoying playing games with the ps3 stuttering.
@762
What did you say to Bill when your $2000 PC was messed up by Vista? These things happen. But cool to let us all know about your TWO jobs…
For those hew think FW 2.40 is fine I will say this agin “I got my 60 gig ps3 last year, [[Its been working great]]!!!! until I downloaded firmware update 2.40, after downloading it it reset, when it reset my user names did not come up and I could not get into my XMB.”
I was lucky enough to get the 2.4 already and I LOVE IT!!!
I do have a question though. I played Pain last night and it doesn’t even show under the trophy icon. The only game listed there is SSHD. Does Pain need a patch for the trophies? There was an update as soon as I went on the game so I thought it would be active. I earned a trophy in game but it did not show in my profile.
Any help would be appreciated:)
And if anyone can help me get this stupid Gravatar thingy working it would be great also. I have tried everything including contacting them to no avail. They never even responded.
So. . . People are disappointed because they didn’t get a “Universal” In-Game Music Player. Does that really lessen from this FW? I mean it kind of makes sense not to make it universal as some games wouldn’t make much sense if different music was playing, such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Perhaps, they couldn’t put in this functionality because each game is unique, thus the devs would have to put it in. I don’t know. But does it really lessen from the fact that we got In-Game XMB? Switching games and talking to friends just got monumentally easier. Besides, just give some time and most of the games you own will have the music functionality anyway. I installed the update around midnight and it is working just fine and no complaints from me.
@Trat (753) You ought to be able to, they are exactly the same update.
@765
I think you have me confused with someone else…who the hell is Bill and i dont have a PC. I made the comment about the Two jobs to stress the point that today no one has expendable income just to throw away on crap. I have had a PS1, PS2 and now the PS3. I could have just brought a Xbox360( although i know its a 30% chance that piece of crap would have failed by now as well) but i am being loyal to Sony. When your money is stretched and you still save enough to buy leisure products you want to be able to enjoy them. Nothing wrong with that.
i have had problems with the update after a successful installation so im not sure who said there wasnt but the only reason im upset is because the first 3 people i spoke with at sony told me the update was error free and now im finding out im not the only one with the problems after being made feel stupid
the station wasnt free and neither were the hours of everything i lost or all the data i HAD stored on it till the update
I went through all of my disc based games last night to see how the in-game XMB worked out on my 60GB.
Ridger Racer 7 – Normal
Warhawk – Horrible framerate
Ratchet & Clank – Fair (enemies on screen while accessing slowed it down, even after pausing)
Uncharted – Low framerate
Ass Creed – Bad framerate (above Warhawk’s and below Uncharted’s)
COD4 – Good (even during actual MP matches)
DMC4 – Normal
GTAIV – Low framerate
MGS4 – Choppy framerate (at start screen, inaccessible during an actual MGO match)
As the updates continue, will we see the in-game XMB’s framerate become more stable?
Thanks.
I don’t think custom sound tracks for ALL games the way the 360 does it will ever be in the PS3. MS has a patent on that, and I would really hate to see Sony stoop down to pay MS for that. The best that can be done now is for Sony to try to convince developers to use the feature, to me its not a big deal.
man all i gotta say is these guys really dont know what there doing.
If they can get this right it would be 1000 times sicker then 360 which i have.
1) There HAS to be a way to private chat in a game and not only in the priv chat screen
2) Once inserting a game disc it SHOULD show you what need be done to aquire the :trophies , achievements or entitlements what ever you want to call them.
3)They should allow you to send voice messages.
this is just my opinion lemme know if you agree
@772
Do you mean the framerate of the xmb, or after you exited the xmb?
As ive noticed that if you pull up the in game xmb, then exit it then the games ive tried slow down and stutter forever after you exit the xmb, GTA IV is horrible after and so is burnout paradise, starts making them unplayable. Really hope it improves soon.
@773
of course its a big deal
what 360 gets universal music and ps3 the better console gets crappy developer choice which is going to be soo limited i mean rockstar wont patch gta iv do you know how bad that is…
lol EDIT
hehe ^_^ sorry @773 didnt read the me at the end of the sentence LOL

Smarter Firmware Updates
Let me agree to terms and conditions—a tiny 1K file transfer—before downloading the whole software update. Then once the update downloads it can roll into an install without me having to push some stupid buttons on the controller.
Automatic Downloaded-Game Installation
We’re really still manually installing most game and demo downloads? Seriously? No, seriously?
In-Game Web Browsing
OK, so here’s an instance where we can access the XMB while in a game, but we can’t really access it. Because you can’t browse the web while in a game. I’d love the option to look up walkthroughs…err…hints and tips without going to the computer.
Controllers Don’t Charge Without PS3 “On”
Why do I need to leave on my entire PS3 to charge one controller? A firmware update could program the USB portion of the console to stay powered on while charging like, say, the Xbox 360.
Account Management
Let’s just stick all those account management menus into the PlayStation Store. That way if I need to make changes to my account (something that would probably be prompted by a transaction at the PS Store), I don’t need to revisit dead gray screen land.
Screengrabs
Any game, any time, I want to be able to perform a screengrab. I want to then be able to save the screengrab to my photo library or message it to a friend. This software technology has long been figured out, and it’d be nice to have for showing everyone how awesome I am all the time.
Lower Power Standby
The PS3’s primary standby mode is super low energy. But if you want to access Remote Play (XMB, pictures, etc) through the PSP, it’s suddenly sucking as much power as five refrigerators just sitting there. Surely there is a clever way that the PS3 can be activated through an SMS or email system that would make it more eco-friendly than just being on all the time. Remote Play is not something I’ll use every day. And because of that, I’ve turned off the function completely—which is a shame because it’s a pretty incredible idea.
If you guys was able to do all this you won’t believe all the people that would love the PS3, please you guys……
@724
“PS3 is only a couple of milion in sales behind. eBay is full with offers for a 2nd hand 360… Its only really the US market thats bigger.
If there are gamers who need to take their heads out of there a*s its 360 fanboys, with their slogan: Games above stabilty…”
I own all 3 systems and disagree with that slogan. That would be like saying PS3 fanboys have a slogan: Everything But Games!
As far as stability with games and online play… I’ve had waaaaaayyyy more problems with my PS3 to the point that I don’t even look forward to playing games online with it. Theres always an update or an issue.
I love my PS3. In the short 6 months I’ve had it, it has improved dramatically in both games and features. But, the sad truth is, if I were to estimate how I spend my time with it, only about 15% would go to using it for games.
When I want to turn on a system and jump into a game, the PS3 is not my first choice.
I’m sure that once this firmware is implimented correctly people are going to start patching the games to incorporate the function. And correct me if i’m wrong, but didn’t MGS4 have the integral I-pod that was supposed to be turned on once this upgrade happened?
Sony, you guys shouldn’t turn into Microsoft. Since when was rushing stuff affiliated to Sony??? I have patience. My 2.4 update worked PERFECTLY. I’m here for everyone else who had their PS3 crash. I know people cry because certain things aren’t out yet, but tell them to do your job and put up with kids pushing them and bashing them for not thinking of everything.
Sony. Do what you have to to make it work and take your time to get it done right. At least a Japanese gaming system is still in touch with old fashioned American ethics. Quality, not Quantity.
Ironic how an American company is the other way around (microsoft).
Just got an E-mail from Microsofts department of software creations and this is what was given to me :
“It is absurd, preposterous and at all otherwise inconceivable to think you can put a copy rite on music and how it is played outside of the respected groups and performers who preform their services. If Sony isn’t implementing this technology in their hardware it is to no legality on our part.
Thank you
Neil Wankhoe”
Hope this clears things up
In the next update they should make it to where we can actually play our own music while we’re playing games and especially for online play. hope fully alot of the future games that come out for the ps3 are compatible with the trophies i really wish Battlefield: Bad Company was cause theres alot of trophies in that.
There is any news about the status of fw 2.40 ??
I was looking forward to spend my all weekend playing games… i will do it anyway but it would be nice to have the update.
Go SCEA, keep working on that fix!
‘Fersis member of the Jeff,Noel,Eric and the cool guys and gals of SCEA defence force’
We need to be able to leave status messages, away, be right back and custom status messages. Voice messaging would be nice. Nice update, can’t wait for the next one….improving on this update.
i’m proud of the PSN regardless.. i’ve been proud of the PSN since i first got a Playstation.. we need to take our time and not compete with the Xbox 360′ s producing rate.. the PSN is better than them.. show customers that we are reliable.. MICROSOFT is a money hungry company.. they make a mediocre gaming system.. we have the best everything and PSN has been around to long to let a newcomer outshine the PSN.. just do what you’re a custom to.. DON’T RUSH!
@782
Wait…so is MS denying they have a patent to universal music streaming?
By the way I’m also getting an error when I want to check someone its profile with trophies, but the second time when I check the very same profile I can see it. Probably one of those small bugs in the update. So please make sure that the recent 2.40 owners without download problems will have an update too.
Much obliges and good luck :-)
@ gamesblow (782)
Was wondering where you were at. How many people are going to call you a liar ?
Nice post.
@gamesblow
you suck.
we need weather and rss feed support
and a Google earth software for ps3 will be nice but i keep on dreaming these things on my night sleep :)
I downloaded and installed on my launch 60gb in the morning. No problems yet. I see what everyone is talking about for the lag when trying to use the in-game XMB. When will it work for any PS3 game? I tried all my first party (and 3rd party) games and they don’t work when trying to play music. I will now have to wait for the developers to send out an update so I can listen to my music when replaying for the nth time…This updated is worthless until all the games support trophies and in-game xmb. The internet search and the time/date was a great addition well.
@ plqa (790)
Now who’s the troll here ?
Guys as I reported back a few pages…
3rd party is not on the trophy bandwagon. Sony is trying too much and not fast enough on any one set feature.
Home, trophy support, exclusive blu-ray only features for ps3 games. The list goes on and on and nothing is getting done.
I have been in contact with a few developers and they all have no plans to support Trophy’s this year. none of them.
Konami, Capcom etc… etc.
What I see the trophy’s becoming is an exclusive to most Ps3 in house games and maybe their 2nd party games. Exclusive games will get trophy’s but xbox 360 equivalent games will not be getting them.
Sid Myers Civilization Revolutions, Devil may cry 4, MGs4, Bad Company and the list goes on and on… None are slated to have trophy support.
Burnout is the only 3rd party game confirmed to have trophy’s other than bioshock right now and that’s probably because Sony had to pay them.
Trust me guys… Trophy’s are going to be an exclusive to Ps3 only games in the end. Wait and see. I’ve talked to a few people now and this is what the consensus is.
Geez, I wish people stopped going on about X360. What are X360 fanbots doing in the Playstation blog anyway?!
This problem doesn’t even compare to the X360’s RROD. And the X360 doesn’t compare to the PS3. The PS3 looks like a sophisticated piece of AV consumer electronics equipment and looks the part in anyones home theatre setup. Not to mention it works as expected. The X360 is a RROD waiting to happen and looks like a cheap plastic babys toy in comparison. ;)
@ gamesblow
Off topic, my name on the US boards is the same as here. I sent a message to a user named “gamesblow” on there. Did you get it ? Or was that not you ?
