Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

What would you like to change in the audio department then? You can also change the output… I cannot think of anything else. I let the PS3 configure my audio section automatically and I haven’t touched it after that. Please tell me, maybe I’m missing out on something great.

  • Mike, I hear you KEEP saying they CAN force devs to put in trophies.

Bottom line is they can’t force every damn deve to do so. For example IW, they are probably working on CoD6 right now, they can’t go back and add trophies in and whatnot, if they say NO to Sony, thats it, its a NO.

But obviously they will be helping devs put it in the game, as you can see with some games right now, and future titles.

ALSO Mike, devs did already have the tools for in-game music, but devs had to put it in their game, in their code, in their menus. It wasn’t like in-game XMB, now devs can much more easily allow their games to support it, and thats it, no need for menus and whatnot like before, and its easier.

And Ed, what did you expect to come in in-game XMB? Friends, and Music, thats all I was expecting, we got DLs and more importantly mic settings (thank god), and soon to come are cross game invites & voice chat.

  • WTF!!!, all you people that are talking BS(360 fanboys or confused Motherf*%#rs) about the Sony and their products, this is PLAYSTATION.BLOG. what r u doing here in the first place?

  • @690 TouchyEd
So… then what is your complain ?
That SONY needs to force developers to add functionality ?
i think that you must complain to developers.

  • @ Sentry i would not count on for sony to put in cross game invites & voice chat in the next update or any future ones …if they are having probs with this new update im sure there not going to add it in b/c we fans say so ..

  • Trat:

We waited a hell of a long time for these features. It’s not like Sony RUSHED anything. They just failed to deliver the features we were asking for.

I’m on a team of 6 developers, and in 18 months we’ve created a corporate management system that is probably 10 times as complex as the PS3’s operating system.

Now, granted, we don’t have to worry about the hardware aspect of things — and we don’t have millions of end-users.

But I know what’s possible in that kind of timeframe. And what Sony has delivered is a brazen disappointment.

  • @ Trat (691)

If a company farts in the wrong direction, Sony can revoke their license. Developing on the PS3 is not a right, it’s a privilege, one that can be taken away at Sony’s discretion.

By the way things are going, and from all accounts on the previous 2.40 FAQ blog post, we’ll (not you and I specifically) be arguing about this issue over the next 10 pages :P

In all seriousness though, if you really fight for what other people want, then why are you arguing with me that I didn’t get what I (and many other people) have asked for ? Why aren’t you right beside us saying, “Yeah, Sony, give these people REAL in-game custom soundtracks. Sony, step up and get devs on board for Trophy support for ALL PS3 games, past, present and future !” ? In the end, it’s all Sony, it’s their machine, their goal, their vision.

I think the lack of indecision or uniformity, amongst other things, is the reason Phil left us. (and delaying the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark… shame on you Phil if you happen to be reading this !)

    Anyway, I always appreciate feedback.

  • Fersis:

My complaint is the way Sony keeps everything hush, hush. Never revealing any details. And then posts disceptive blog entries and videos that hint at functionality that isn’t even implemented.

    That’s my only real gripe.

I like the 2.40 update. But I find it considerably lacking.

  • @703 TouchyEd
The OS mistakes were done by SCEI ,SCEA is trying to fix that and make a better OS.
Give them some credit dont be so harsh.

  • @705 TouchyEd
So… everyone was hyped for ‘rumors’ nothing official !
Maybe they should clarified a little more about that.
again give them some credit dont be so harsh.

  • @ TouchyEd (705)

The sad thing looks like we’re getting labeled as “haters” when we’re probably some of the most passionate people and love our Sony products the most!

    Ironic, isn’t it ? LOL

    Agree with this post 100%

For the first few posts, I kept throwing in that I actually do like the in-game messaging thing… I guess :P

  • I didnt labeled you guys as haters :S
What i said is ,give them some credit ,theyre working hard.

  • @ Fersis working hard no no …..they are not,…. they are losing games to other systems ….

Now PS3fanboy.com i read that Infinity Ward, Insomniac and 2K Games are not going to add trophy patches to there older PS3 games .

  • I’m not complaining about the OS mistakes or the firmware issues. These things happen. And I know from experience that bugs and hardware issues are almost impossible to avoid. I’m glad that Sony is acting quickly to try to fix the problem.

My issue is Sony failing to understand what their customers are asking for.

Is Sony arrogant? Do they think that they know what we want?

    Who knows.

They certainly don’t interact with us very often. Sure, they post blog entries. But then they vanish into the night and rarely reply to any questions or concerns.

But I think the biggest problem is that Japan has disctinctly different needs & desires than Europe and North America. And Sony generally follows the trends in Japan, not here.

Perhaps Sony Japan just doesn’t understand the particular social aspects of gaming that we know and love in America.

Maybe that’s the reason that the XBox 360 has only sold a handful of consoles in Japan. And millions here.

    North Americans love:

    1. Loud music (of our choice)
    2. Cell phones (and chatting online)
    3. Text messaging (instantly, and anywhere)
    4. Connecting with our friends online (again: instantly and anywhere)

The XBOX caters almost perfectly to those requirements. The PS3, to date, does not.

It’s getting better. But there’s still a considerable gap.

  • Bricking problem is right! cuz thats just what it did was turn my ps3 into a real expensive and fancy i might add BRICK! I called customer support told him the issue he had me try a reset one time then said ok we’ll send you a box so you can send it to us. so now I have to send it in for god only know how long for them to try and fix and I assume now I will lose any progress I have made in any games and have to be without a game system. this SUX all I wanted to do was 15 minutes of killing on COD4 you know get my fix. well I got my fix alright

  • @ Fersis (709)

No one said YOU said we were haters.

Why did you think that I immediately meant you ?

And we are giving them credit, where it’s due, which doesn’t amount to much almost 2 years into the life of this system. Still delayed, worse looking games and lack of a feature set of some other console.

  • @711 TouchyEd
    Easily your best post !!!
Is that what i say all the time.
OS is done with the japan taste in mind.
Its not that SCEA are lousy workers.
Obviously we are not posting on the SCEI blog…

  • @ 702

You will see it, they have been working on it before 2.4 even came out, it’ll come.

    @ 703

What did they fail to deliver exactly? There was a time where people were asking JUST fot friends access, not music and friends, and they delivered on more then that, friends, music, some settings (some more will be added later, trust me), and of course signing into the PSN, checking download status etc.

How many times must I say, this is NOT the end for these features, in-game XMB will continue to be bettered over time, just like the XMB was, over time it got faster to browse, easier to use, etc. Same thing will happen with this, nothing launches in its final shape and form when it comes to FW.

Thing is, all the rumors got your expectations high, for Sony to come and deliver the real thing. I bet if we never heard or saw any rumors, everyone would love this update much, much more. I mean, number one most requested feature, friends, anywhere, anytime.. Done.

  • Please release firmware 2.41 already Sony. A few of my friends didn’t even get to download the update. This is a lesson to Sony. Stop listening to these stupid fanboys that are rushing you to release a firmware if it isn’t ready. Let them buy an XBox and get lsot. That way I don’t have to put up with their stupid comments.

  • @712

It’s not bricked. The “brick” cannot be used on this problem. The PS3 is fine, it just can boot due to some data on your harddrive. It’s a SOFTWARE issue, not a hardware problem.

Anyway the same thing happened to me, just read my post #261 on this thread (https://blog.playstation.com/2008/07/02/firmware-v240-status/comment-page-6/#comment-79342)

If you don’t want to format your drive, go out and buy a new drive (it’s less than $100 anyway) and put it in. When sony fixes the problem you can put back the old drive and get your stuff back (assuming Sony fixes the problem).

  • @ 711

How are they failing to see what customers are asking for? Honestly I dont get it. We wanted background downloading, they slapped it in, we wanted custom wallpapers, they put it in, we wanted themes like the PSP (ok not everyone but I sure as hell did), and the put it in. Now we want in-game XMB, they put it in. What would you really need to access here? NOT everything, they gave us mainly friends, because its the main thing we asked for and you know it. Music? Yeah they gave that to us too, or they WERE, so it is possible its not really a big limitation or something blocking them. For some reason they didn’t, so they are leaving it to devs to easily enable it. Thats what we wanted, they gave it to us, and they will give us more as they have already said.

PS- Great you guys ignore my post on the last page, why? Because you have no response? I don’t get it.

  • @ Sentry you put to much blind faith in to sony …it toke then almost 2 years for this cross game XMB to come out its going to take a long time for them to pull there head out of there A_s and be up to where Xbox 360 is now .

  • @ 703
“But I know what’s possible in that kind of timeframe. And what Sony has delivered is a brazen disappointment.”
You and I will never know how hard or easy it was for them to implement it and through how many iteratins the FW went before it got released.

You got IGXMB and they delivered. You got in-game music and they delivered. You got trophies and Sony delivered.

What more do you want? In-game music like 360? Not gonna happen.

    @704
“In all seriousness though, if you really fight for what other people want, then why are you arguing with me that I didn’t get what I (and many other people) have asked for ?”
Me? I have all I wanted: IGXMB with all the features that matter. I can read / write messages in-game now and add / block users. A buddy of mine always had to exit his game to start up his BT device. He can do that in-game now. I don’t care what some fanboys want in order to be respected by their students in class who have a 360, I would never bought one anyway. I don’t care for changing the resolution in-game (or anything as insane as that). I rather see Sony put more effort in games and in Home than to add features only a hand full of players demand. Don’t get me wrong, I like al the bells and wistles, I really do. But I don’t care for them that much. As long as my console reads imported games and my online play is for free. Right, now I want them to fix this 2.40 FW.

I like to have in-game chat, although I can do with my telephone. I really have no desires left. I really think about myself, you know that by now.

“Why aren’t you right beside us saying, “Yeah, Sony, give these people REAL in-game custom soundtracks. Sony, step up and get devs on board for Trophy support for ALL PS3 games, past, present and future !” ? In the end, it’s all Sony, it’s their machine, their goal, their vision.”
I don’t want them to pay MS, first… And I never listen to music during games anyway: I always turn down the music volume.

“I think the lack of indecision or uniformity, amongst other things, is the reason Phil left us. (and delaying the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark… shame on you Phil if you happen to be reading this !)”
    Speculation…

  • @713 TristanMike
easy ,because you replied a comment that TouchyEd replied to me :D
is like following a chain ,hahaha

  • SENTRY:

We’re all getting tired of answering the same question from you over and over.

    What didn’t they deliver?

Custom Soundtracks that actually let you listen to our own music in any game we want.

At present, you can’t do it in a single additional game than you could before the 2.40 update.

So how exactly did Sony “deliver” this to us?

All they’ve done is deliver a promise of future potential with nothing to show for it today (Sony’s speciality).

Now, quit asking the same question. We’ve answered it.

  • Okay

    touchyEd (695)
Thank you for setting me straight in regards to the settings issue (686)
I have checked it again and realized that I can get at my headset, just not the other settings IE: sound
Well that sums up my question except for the mini player demonstrated. any thoguths on that one LOL
I Do appreciate the help as this is the first time evere posting here

  • Sounds good, guess I’m glad this sort of thing hasn’t plagued the PSP yet.

  • @ 718
“its going to take a long time for them to pull there head out of there A_s and be up to where Xbox 360 is now ”
PS3 is only a couple of milion in sales behind. eBay is full with offers for a 2nd hand 360… Its only really the US market thats bigger.

If there are gamers who need to take their heads out of there a*s its 360 fanboys, with their slogan: Games above stabilty…

I will never pay for online play… If PS4 gets it, forget it.

  • #722

Oddly, the mini-player and in-game music part of the video was actually just a demonstration of functionality that Sony had included in a “test” firmware. They removed it from the actual release of the firmware.

So, there is no in-game mini-player (or in-game music playing abilities). At least not yet.

Why did they choose to leave that in the video?

    Good question.

  • According to TouchyEd, I must not be from North America. Because i don’t love any of that crap.

  • seven hundred and twenty thrid!!!!!!
ok how many ps3’s are we talking about?
nobody I know has had a single problem,
nobody on the forum i frequent has had a
    problem.

is it that big of a deal?
how does it compare to teh RROD in numbers?

  • @ 725
*Sigh…* I really, really have it in my 2.40 PS3. Play an MP3 and it goes to the music player. Push the PS button and it goes to the XMB. Now scroll top of your music and there is the player in the XMB.

You could have read this all op, you know.

  • @725
The RROD# is 1:3. More if you take the player in account that are on the 3rd/4th/5th machine…

  • @721

sentry is probabaly the most level headed one on this blog i mean ffs hes absolutey right, what sort of stupid idea was it to give the music choice to the devs.

and for your information ed, this quesiton hasnt been answered becuase there isnt an offical statement from sony.

  • @725 TouchyEd
The video was recorded with a different 2.40
Not the ‘retail’ one, they only showed a work in progress (as eric says on the video)
    But it was odd.
Thats show you that these fine folks are working until last minute.
Come on say something good about theeeemm !!!! :D

  • @725/726

they left it in the video to show how it COULD/WOULD finction once devs utuilized the tools. This way they wouldnt have to realse a third video weeks/months down the line to show everyone how to use in game music

Obiviuosly they used PJM as a demo.. they never said it would work for that game. Look at the original trophy screens(planets etc)… what games are those trophy’s from.

they were just using data to demo, just like they used a modifed 2.4 to demo how end users interact with custom soundtracks once devs build it in

  • @ 724

If there are gamers who need to take their heads out of there a*s its 360 fanboys, with their slogan: Games above stabilty…

I will never pay for online play… If PS4 gets it, forget it.

Well im a sony fanboy ……i stayed with sony since 1996 ….But sony is losing fans and game makers b/c they dont care any more …they outed that father of playstation then look what happen they cant get things right .

this is not 360 fanboys in here we are all for sony but they messed up big time …

  • #726 rbanke

I’m talking about general trends in North America. Not about every single person.

Obviously everyone has different likes and dislikes. I didn’t say EVERYONE likes those things. And I didn’t say YOU in particular. That was pretty clear (to anyone that isn’t a complete idiot).

Collectively, there are different trends in different geographical locations.

And Sony tends to focus on the trends across the ocean.

    That was my point.

  • So the explination on why people are saying Sony did NOT deliver with FW 2.4, is because they are allowing custom soundtracks to be enabled by devs, not universal.

How many times does this have to be explained? You keep ignoring the explanation, on how they DID have it universal, and when put the pieces together, something made them put it in the hands of devs. Devs not wanting it for all games? Patents? Who knows, but we are STILL going to get it, come back to me later and tell me your favorite games dont have custom soundtracks. Its a matter of time man…

But really, that is what makes this update SOOO disappointing according to you and a few others, no universal in-game music. That was the 2nd, highly requested feature, the first being Friends. So that leaves me thinking they delivered on what we want about 85%.

So yes, this is why I dont like arguing, because in the end some closes their minds and doesn’t allow an answer to come in.

  • Remember SONY is a japanese company.

    1. I don’t personally know anyone with AIDS. But that doesn’t mean it’s not killing millions of people a year.

    2. What forum are you frequenting, Martha Stewart’s? The Sony forums are absolutely crawling with people having problems.

  • mine is successful but still some slowDOWNNNNNNNZ

  • piversmine2freak

i think if you downloaded it around midnight, you wont have any problems, thats just for me though

  • @ 733
Dude, its just FW… most of the gamers aren’t even aware of all of these problems… People just want to play games and don’t pay for online. The hand full of people who come here can scream all they want: will not change anything.

    @731+732
The player is actually in this FW. You can find it when you play a mp3 and go into XMB while doing so. The icon for it is at the top of you music files…

  • stop complaining about stupid features like music, all that matters is the update bricked peoples systems. I rather have the ps3 work then play music. If your harddrive got wiped out you would be pissed not complaining about music

  • I got the firmware from someone that had downloaded it from the website. At 9pm i installed it. It completed just fine and my PS3 rebooted without an issue.

Someone on the PS forums said that it’s possible it could be an issue with the new icons and previously made CUSTOM themes. I had the PSN theme installed when i updated.

For those wondering, i have a launch 20Gb with a 120GB hdd installed. 80+ of that is free.

  • @ 735
If a dev doesn’t want to put it in their game then they don’t care for you guys. They don’t deserve your money then.

Devs like Insomniac don’t want to put it in R1 and R&C now cause they are busy with R2. They want to do quality stuff and no rush jobs, thats why they wont be putting it in R1 and R&C now, they need their resources elsewere ATM.

  • Once again TouchyEd
Thanks for your setting me straight on the miniplayer
    ref (post# erm..you know)
Good lord you guys are pumping out posts at a feverish pace! BUT the quality is great!
Good on you guys! And maybe JUST maybe
Sony WILL read some of this and see that forums are not all made up of flame wars and fanboys, but with a small core of literate and well spoken posters who may or may not agree on all Sony is doing but can put forth some Constructive criticism AND give credit where credit is due.
Thanks for the informative morning folks.
    Shadewalker out..

  • People don’t mind paying for online — if the online is up-to-snuff.

There are millions of people subscribed to XBOX Live. And more join everyday.

I agree that I don’t want to pay for online with the PS3. At least not with the functionality that is currently on offer. But if the PS3 service got really slick, I’d gladly pay for it.

Hell, at the end of the day, XBOX Live is only a few bucks a month. For the additional cost of the PS3, I could buy nearly 4 years of online with the XBOX and still have money for a discount game.

Luckily, I find enough other positives with the PS3 (blu-ray, media capabilities, certain exclusives, etc) that I’m not ready to consider that kind of switch.

  • I wonder how many of these forum complainers either here or elsewhere are legit. I’m sure there is a problem but its probably way overhyped.
