As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.
@ 643 Trat
40 GB is the ‘standard’ SKU , most companies when test their games on retail units use the 40 GB unit.
But thats not it . the best PS3 version … is mine !!! i love that little blackbox…
jejeje ,a little joke to start the day.
(But seriously,40 GB is the ‘standard one’)
the music is not playing with my games like pixel junk monsters and like i have alot of music on my playstation 3 so 2.40 is the best but i was looking to play some music whole im in the game so sony can u fix this
@649 Wooda20
The custom music will be aplied for each developers via a patch (if they want).
In game music wont work in a system side patch. Think about it: The most they could do would be to mute one in-game channel and play your music over it. Not only would this be clumsy as hell (which is not Sony’s style), but chances are that the games don’t have one universal music channel (meaning that when you activated your in-game music, gun fire/car motor/etc. gets muted and you have two music tracks playing at the same time). Well why not allow the user to pick the right channel? Because it would be clumsy as hell. Again, not Sony’s style. If you still don’t get it, just ask yourself how GTAIV would know to either mute it’s car radio, or to play your music over the car radio instead of it’s own tracks when you played your own music? And what happens if you try to activate custom tracks while playing Guitar Hero? And finally, for those who’s reply is simply “But Xbox has it”: It works with Xbox because custom soundtracks were implemented from the beginning. Sony has been playing catchup for a while now, and I for one won’t expect too much (Though I’m quite happy with my 2.40, Guess I got lucky) until HOME comes out.
@646
The patents are for playback true the OS (i.e. the music is played outside of the game)… if Sony is pay them they would have implemented it the way the 360 has.
@ Sentry (631)
You’re defending the In-Game music thing like it’s a new feature. It’s already there, already waiting for games to be patched. PAIN, Burnout Paradise, High Velocity Bowling. The ONLY difference is HOW we actually play the music. How is this a step forward ? HOW ? Explain it to me and I’ll concede. The point of having or asking for the “Custom Soundtrack” thing, was so that we could by-pass the developers and do it ourselves. That’s what we want, that’s what we asked for, that’s NOT what we were delivered. That’s all I’m asking my friend.
@ PhoenixBlack (625)
That’s what I’m waiting for. Someone to back up what they’re saying.
@ Trat (635)
LOL !!!! A link !! ROFL, that’s a good one. Did you even read the Blog post for which you are posting on ? And I quote,
“We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic…”
I’d consider that if they get enough calls to actually remove a global firmware, the problem is not as “limited” as they want us to believe. If you don’t view this as downplaying the issue, than we see things in two different lights. Simple as that.
Now, in terms of Trophy support, you have NO proof, aside from Sony saying one thing, and developers saying another. Secondly, you’re WRONG ! Sony CAN force them to do it, they CHOOSE not too. Just like Sony CHOOSES not to impose restrictions on the PSN, the way Microsoft does on Live! It’s their console, their service, their choice. If you think otherwise, you are mistaken. Sony can simply say, “You must patch games that are currently out or we are revoking your license to produce games on our systems. Do you think developers will stay or go ?
Trophies are not supposed to be this “cool” little feature that you can use if you want. It’s supposed to be a direct competition for “Achievements”, something that IS universal across ALL XBox games, that ALL XBox games support.
I’m not even going to go into the rest of your uninformed comments. If you don’t understand me, I’m not going to spend the next 5 pages trying to make you see my points.
@648
as it satnds sony doesnt have to pay micro anything… cause they are not infringing on the patent..
by putting the choice in the hands of the devs, the can legally circumvent MS’s patent
i wasnt saying sony didnt know about the patetn,. i was just trying to inform a few people here why ps3’s do not have “universal custom soundtracks”
@650
they wont though its horrible it really is horrible.
@ PhoenixBlack
Thank you for being the first person to actually back up what they’re saying.
@648
IMO, the best PS3 will always be the newest SKU’s. So a better PS3 comming is the one with 65nm CPU and GPU.
@649
There is nothing to fix. THIS is how it works and how it will STAY cause it works great when patched. Devs need to patch their games for in-game music. If you don’t get a patch: no in-game music. There is nothing to fix. If a dev release a game in the future without the feature DONT buy it: thats the best we can do.
You know, I also think the 60gb model it’s the best SKU.
Why? I love my ps2 chip.
Anyway, I know new revisions will be better because they release less heat and are cheaper maybe, but still. It’s the full package!
(Didn’t know about the patent of in-game music. Damn)
—
Another thing, it seems like many people with 60gb model did not have the problem. Could that be a reason? Which models are you running and the 2.40 worked for you?
@ Trat (657)
I agree whole-heartedly that the best voice we have is our wallets… but yelling a bit helps too.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that jazz :p
@656 no prob
the funny thing is ive asked if anyone wanted me to post this info in many other blog posts this past week or so but no one has ever expressed any intrest. weird, huh?
SKU: (US) 60 gig (day 1)
FW: 2.4 Flawless Install
SSDHD: Problem updating;
–Symptom: Restarted 60 gig every time i was promoted for the patch.
–Solution: Cancled Patch Loaded up SSDHD fully, used the ingame menu to go to the store, was prompted again for the patch this time it worked fine.
… Hope this helps
I’ve had no problems with updating to 2.40 whatsoever, however, in the rare event of corrupted system settings leaving the PS3 unbootable, Sony should add a recovery mode, by turning on the PS3 and holding the power button for 3 beeps, ALL settings are restored to factory defaults.
@659 and 655 I sure if you post another 50 times in a single thread that works as well the community loves reading such high quality post from you two and gameblows and izka and ed.
Wow this blog is pissing me off, its not letting me post!!
What I am saying is Mike (since not even 1.4 of my post went through), is that you two are saying there is a BIIIG problem and your gonna switch to 360, etc. But for what? Because trophies aren’t magically appearing, and because games have yet to be patched for music? Just imagine if rumors never came up, and 2.4 came out later (still in summer), would you be saying this now?
Seriously its not as big of a deal as you make it out to be. This is for the future IMO, its laying the groundwork for what will be done, but nothing starts off with 100% support and compatibility.
@ PhoenixBlack (660)
Well, that’s probably because most people are just content with believing everything they read/see/hear and have no interest in exploring the truth. In fact, it’s one of the main reasons Microsoft gets away with some of the things they get away with. Thankfully places like the EU don’t follow so lightly, which is why we see so many anti-trust lawsuits over there compared to North America here.
I still get a kick over Microsoft and their “threats” against Linux, yet never ponying up what patents Linux supposedly infringes on.
TristanMike:
There’s no point in arguing with some of these people. They’re so blindly loyal to Sony (and to their PS3’s) that they aren’t even capable of understanding reality anymore.
To suggest that Sony implemented Custom Soundtracks in this firmware release is absolutely ludicrous. Hell, even Sony admits that they’ve only “layed the groundwork for custom soundtracks”.
That’s like saying: “Okay, I’ve mixed the cement for the foundation of a new house” and all the fanboys start celebrating “We have a NEW house!! It’s HERE!!”
@ Sentry (664)
I feel ya, I’ve been having problems posting on the blog too… maybe they’re moderating the lot of us now. :P
Can someone provide the official patent number for the Microsoft patent? I’d like to look it up at the United States Patent and Trademark Office website.
Thanks.
@gjmunday
My ps3 keeps dropping connection to psn (and its not my internet or router, checked them fine)
Same problem I’m getting. I also can’t play cod4 with my headset on. My connection drops big time can’t even play the game. When I have my headset off everything work as it should.
I really like the clock on the 2.4 update. I can’t wait for 4.8 update maybe there will be more stuff by then. Yes I know Sony is working on it.
@668 Are you serious. Haha, i just posted it. look on page 13
@ 653
“LOL !!!! A link !! ROFL, that’s a good one. Did you even read the Blog post for which you are posting on ?”
LOL!!@ ROFL@#!@ ZOMG!@# Yes I did! OMG!@!
“And I quote,”
And you quote:
“We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic…”

How do you know what they consider ‘limited’, is it 100 calls, 1000 calls, 100.000 calls? You have a link or something? Did you also call?
LOL, all they are saying is: 2.40 is broken – we take it down and fix it cause we have enough complaints to legitimize it for us to do so.
“Now, in terms of Trophy support, you have NO proof, aside from Sony saying one thing, and developers saying another.”
Thats… actually… what Sony and devs said…
“Secondly, you’re WRONG ! Do you think developers will stay or go ?”
No… when you have a contract with someone you can only demand for whats in the contract. If Sony develops a laser that kills players when they die, they cannot force them to put a patch out so it will work with their games. Devs must either say: Cool, we will make a patch now. Or, nah, we have our money already.
Its very simple: if you want to buy a game next month but it lacks trophies (or in-game music, for that matter), then just leave it on the shelves. Thats how I treat EA always…
“Trophies are not supposed to be this “cool” little feature that you can use if you want. It’s supposed to be a direct competition for “Achievements”, something that IS universal across ALL XBox games, that ALL XBox games support.”
So, don’t buy a game if it hasn’t got trophy support. You like it alot, I can hear, so force the devs to implement it. Its not gonna take them months to do so…
“I’m not even going to go into the rest of your uninformed comments. If you don’t understand me, I’m not going to spend the next 5 pages trying to make you see my points.”
If you need 5 pages to make your point, you think its my fault I don’t understand you?
Thank God i download it early at work in my pen drive, mine’s working fine!
40GB PS3- changed the 40GB HDD for a 250GB
42″ LCD SHARP AQUOS 1080p
COD4, GTA4, MGS4, AND ASSASSINS CREED
Please make sure that the ps3 is backwards compatible and can play Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3. Thank you much.
What about those whose PS3 crashed. Should we really have to pay $150 to get fixed or replaced with a different model? I have the 60gb model and I would rather have it fixed for free then replace with a different model like the 40gb which has fewer usb ports and no compact flash/sd/memory stick slots. Also what about all the stuff we’ve downloaded from the Playstation Store. I’ve downloaded a bunch of movie and game trailers that are no longer available and if they have to reset the harddrve or whatever it is they have to do, all that is lost.
ya know I got 2.40 and not having any problems but I don’t like not being able to use custom soundtracks on any of the games so far and also I would like to see GTA IV, MGS4, and COD4 patched for trophies cuz those are like the only games i’ve been playin lately. anyone know if their gonna get patched or not?
@ Ed (666) Nice number ;)
I understand that, and I accept it. But just because some people (I am NOT pointing fingers at any one in particular) don’t want to listen, that doesn’t mean I should give up speaking.
I believe that vocalizing my feeling are better than keeping them locked away in the deepest recesses of my soul so that one day I just snap. I think it promotes discussion, not hinders it.
I try my best not to be rude with my comments. Sometimes they may be frank and to the point, but I try to keep an air of understanding or at the very least, listen to what other people have to say. Which is why my posts are usually so long winded.
That is, unless I get the urge for a sweetly sarcastic comment, then one line is all I need. :P
For those who are charged 150$ to fix their PS3 and live in the province of Quebec(maybe the rest of Canada too, but I’m not sure):
Bring up the “Legal Warranty” law, and they should tell you it’s gonna be fixed for free. If not, go to small claims and you’ll win automatically since Sony said the console should be alive and kicking for more than 10 years. Also, the legal warranty states that any product has a default warranty of 2 years. The promise of 10 years from Sony adds a year or 2 to that automatic warranty.
I’m sure they are working hard on fixing their issues, but don’t let yourself be charged for this.
no prob here but the updated lags as hell when i play a shooter and the in-game
IM is not working ….other then that the Update is pointless .
Yeah I agree some people put a wall in front of them and don’t talk it out; close minded.
But I honestly think that this issue is being blown out of proportion, and that you will look back at now (just like the 2.0 crisis) and see that you have what you were begging for then, or complaining about.
I truly think trophies and level has the potential to be great, and the support for it should start now, Sony has said in the future it will become mandatory, and they are helping developers put it in. So they are doing their part (as IGN and many other previewers have made clear), so now its just time. As each game comes and supports it, the better it will get. This isn’t a big deal really, I think they gave us what we want, and this is only the first step in the right direction.
Bottom Line:
Sony doesn’t yank a firmware update because a “few” people are having issues. Using terms like “few” and “limited” and “isolated” is just corporate damage control. It might fool fools. But nobody else.
There’s clearly a problem that goes beyond a handful of people. Well, clear to anyone that isn’t a blind fanboy.
I wonder if Sony are actually going to replace the bricked PS3s…
@666 TouchyEd
(What a number!)
What SONY’s did on 2.40 ,is adding the API’s needed for custom soundtrack.
So is a developer side feature, so SONY gave them the tools, now if they do or dont want to use it ,its up to them.
That was perfectly explained ,i dont know why are so many people making noise about that.
@ Trat (671)
At the very least, we seem to share the same view on EA. Good for you (and me) ! :D
Actually, to be honest, I couldn’t care less for Trophies. I think a “score” to tell me what kind of gamer I am is absolutely childish, however, I’m not the only Playstation owner either, and I like to fight for the things other people want too and most other people seem to clamor for this feature.
I’m sorry, you are wrong about the Trophy thing. Sony can force developers or take their license to develop games away. Do the companies what to make games and thereby more money by releasing on the PS3 ? Sony needs to stand behind their product and ensure all their products conform to the same standard. If Trophies aren’t “standard” than shame on Sony.
And you apparently don’t get my “sarcasm” which is what my final line was intended to be. Some get and some don’t. You apparently don’t, which is fine too.
@ 674
I doubt you will have to pay for it. But you can always take out the HDD drive and format it on your PC. Stick it back, and it probably will be fixed. Your warranty is off anway (although swapping drives doesn’t inflict warranty) so you have nothing to lose. You lose your HDD content when you do this, but you would also do so if Sony fixed it.
@ 675
Nobody knows, I think its best to send a mail to support from the devs of the games in question… Don’t put in on the devs boards, just drop a mail. Don’t put anything on the Epic forum cause their webmaster bans you in the blink of an eye. God, I hate that WarTourist… ;-)
@ 671 i here you on that …..what i dont understand why did sony add in pointless things in the update …..the only 1 useful thing is the clock ……i have no games that support Trophy ……the in-game XMB lags as hell when i play any type of shooter .
Well I’m just going to post my two cents worth and point out that the 2.40 demonstration Video #1 is either a mock up OR my 2.40 dowload seems to be broken.
I can use the trophy features (have 11 now)
I can use the in game messages (thank you SONY)
BUT the demonstrated item about switching headsets on and off and chaning you audio settings is not in there! and the mini-player for music is not in there……
So is my download broken or did the Video just Lie?
I am hoping someone else can enlighten me on this issue.
No news is good news?
Sentry:
I have no issue with the trophy system. I didn’t expect every game to have it over-night. Personally, I couldn’t care less about it anyway. I don’t play games to achieve high-scores or to gain meaningless “trophies”. But it’s cool that we have it (because obviously a lot of people want it).
What I take issue with is Sony’s ridiculous claim that they’ve implemented “Custom Soundtracks” in this firmware update when they clearly haven’t.
And the in-game XMB functionality is limited to the point of being useless. Don’t get me wrong: I love being able to send and receive messages while in-game.
Sony shouldn’t announce that they’re delivering “In-Game XMB” when really they’re only delivering “In-Game Text Messaging”.
The XMB has many more features…and none of them are accessible in-game. And they should be.
@ Fersis (682)
Because Sony has ALREADY given the tools to do this. Why can’t you people see this !!!???
PAIN was patched to support in-game music, BEFORE this update…so was Burnout Paradise, so it’s already been in the developers kit. All we have now is just a different way to do it.
#682 Fersis
Cripes, we ALL know what Sony claims to have done with the custom soundtrack thing.
But what they’ve done is NOTHING AT ALL like the feature people have been requesting for over a year.
Can you not get that through your head?
We know what they’ve done. We understand their explanation. Our frustration is with the fact that the end-result is completely opposite to what we wanted.
We wanted to be able to listen to our music in any game at any time. Not wait for game developers to put the functionality into their games on a game-by-game basis — because they’re ALREADY DOING THAT. AND IT SUCKS.
@ TrsitanMike (683)
“At the very least, we seem to share the same view on EA. Good for you (and me) !”
Pfff, don’t get me started: Orange Box – Team Fortress anyone?
“Actually, to be honest, I couldn’t care less for Trophies. I think a “score” to tell me what kind of gamer I am is absolutely childish, however, I’m not the only Playstation owner either, and I like to fight for the things other people want too and most other people seem to clamor for this feature.”
Same here.
“I’m sorry, you are wrong about the Trophy thing. Sony can force developers or take their license to develop games away. Do the companies what to make games and thereby more money by releasing on the PS3 ? Sony needs to stand behind their product and ensure all their products conform to the same standard. No, they cannot take away a license from a dev based on that reason. They hand out a license and they make a contract based on that license. They can only refuse to give devs a license for new games. But they choose not to, since they want creative support and that works best IMO if the dev really likes the idea. I mean, why wouldn’t you release any game for the PS3 now without trophy support? A dev who doesn’t care for their future products just doesn’t deserve my money.
“And you apparently don’t get my “sarcasm” which is what my final line was intended to be. Some get and some don’t. You apparently don’t, which is fine too.”
Well, I could say the same thing about you then. Or do I need to explain that to you in the next 5 pages? ;-)
I am the same as @22 I was away at my cottage and I was really looking forward to going home and using it in game music would have been badass no more boring or cheezy in game music is there anyone who knows an estimated time when it is going to come back.
@682
becuase it isnt fair i mean when people talk about wanting ingame custom music they mean on every game (or the majority), its not that great that we have that feature left up to the game devs it should be our choice.
Well of course they won’t release a number and it’s clearly a fw fault.
I hope they could fix it soon since I want to test the new features.
I am just glad I didn’t download the update
#686
You can definitely go into your “accessory settings” while in-game to activate your bluetooth headset (or USB microphone, etc).
But apart from that, you can’t adjust any other system settings (like audio, etc.)
Sony has the formula wrong…
You’re supposed to UNDER promise and OVER deliver. But Sony continually does the opposite.
Wow. Its a good thing that i downloaded the update like around 5:30 in the morning!!!
Dont sweat it guys, they’ll have the update back up and running in no time!!
PSN ID: Crazy_monkey808
Its so funny to see all of this spitting on IGXMB and in0game music when people where crying out for Sony to release it and all the fanboys got put down with comments like: “Do you want it to be half assed?” And the fanboys would say: “I don’t care, I want it now”. Same with Home…
Tsst tsst tsst, you guys never learn…
