Trophies, Timed Challenges for Burnout Paradise

192 10

Second week on the blog – and what a week it’s been!

Here at Criterion, it was great to get the news that the Codename: Cagney update for Burnout Paradise has passed through submission at Sony Europe. That’s a great place to be in. Next step – get the “okay” in the USA and we’ll be sure to be hitting our deadline of 10th July for this awesome FREE pack of game-changing content.

Also, the third episode of our video podcast, CRASH TV is blowing the roof off the iTunes charts with its combination of exclusive footage, news, and details of upcoming PlayStation-specific features.

And talking of upcoming PlayStation-specific features, we’d like to confirm here that Criterion WILL be supporting PlayStation Trophies in a future update of Burnout Paradise. It won’t be the Codename: Cagney update, but Trophies will be coming to Paradise soon.

Burnout Paradise Timed Challenges _03

Now, if that wasn’t enough excitement for the week, we thought we’d talk about Timed Challenges – a new feature that’s coming to Burnout Paradise online in Codename: Cagney that gives you even more ways for you and your online friends to get together and have amazing fun with cars.

If you’ve not played Burnout Paradise before, you may not know about what we call “Freeburn” or “Freeburn Challenges.” So if you haven’t, here’s the deal:

Burnout Paradise is about having fun with cars in a massive, open-world city. Sure, it’s about racing and other game modes, but one of the things that really sets Paradise apart is “Freeburn.” Up to eight players meet online to just mess around in their cars – see who can drift the furthest, get the most air, spins, barrel rolls, drive furthest in oncoming traffic, etc.

Freeburn Challenges are a part of that mode – special challenges that the host of the online game can activate for everyone to do together.

Burnout Paradise Timed Challenges _05

A challenge can be anything from simply driving in oncoming traffic or finding a billboard and smashing it, to lining up all of your teammates and jumping over them. It’s about teamwork and having fun, and there are 350 of these challenges to play with.

Now, Timed Challenges are a new set of 70 Freeburn Challenges that are coming with the Codename: Cagney update that add an extra, but exciting, element – a timer.

When a Timed Challenge is started, players must meet in a specified place within Paradise City. Once there, a timer begins to count down and the team of players must race to complete a challenge in the world in the shortest time possible. If you’re all successful and beat the clock, your best time is put on a leaderboard.

Sounds simple? It is, but it’s loads of fun, and that leaderboard drives everyone back for “just one more go” because you know you can shave a few more seconds off your best time!

Burnout Paradise Timed Challenges _09

And talking of countdowns, it’s just over 9 days to go before you can check it out when Codename: Cagney is released as a free update.

(These exclusive screenshots show a Timed Challenge in progress – here, two new Codename: Cagney cars – a Rossolini Tempesta Dream and a Hunter Steel Oval Champ meet up in a basketball court by the beach and must to leap off the roof of a car park on the far side of the city.)

  • I am definitely picking this game up now! And playing the heck out of it =]

One question: Are you guys using sony’s in game xmb for custom soundtracks or are you implementing your own?

    Thanks for the sweet info!

  • ^^^ Disregard my original question ^^^

    You already answered it!

Thank you guys I’m picking up your game!

  • This maybe cruel but once i played the burnout paradise demo, i said nope not getting it, why?
Loved the older burnout games and it was all full on crashing but now it seems burnout is becoming more like need for speed carbon and now Need for speed Pro street sucks as well. It has all changed and i am not considering to purchase any of those games for now. Lets hope the next burnout doesn’t involve roaming around roads.

  • hey i just got Burnout Paradise and guess what there wasnt a mandatory install, the game utility data was only like 25 MB, does this sound right?! If so this is awesome.

  • @ 153

You should have played it more, thats for sure. Oh well you’re missing out.

  • Can anyone answer 154? serious question.

  • I had never played any burnout games before but last month I tried the game on PSN and I loved it so naturally I bought it.

since then criterion is becoming one of my favorite devs around,,,,

Thanks you guys for your awesome support.this kind of support is not easy to find in this industry.

I just wish that Sony would have bought Criterion instead of EA.but it’s all good .

  • @154

it doesn’t have any installs if I remember correctly,,,so I think you are right

  • @ 156/154

Yeah, that is correct. Many games take little space, it’s only the more recent games that are using the HDD heavily. But titles such as Rock Band, Warhawk, Call of Duty 4, The Orange Box, Ratchet & Clank Future, and many more, use less then half a gig, some not even being a megabyte!

So it all depends on the developer, if they are willing to utilize the HDD, or take the time to optimize the game to do the opposite.

  • @159/158

thanks alot…im also wondering whats up with Oblivion Elder Scrolls, it says the game data utility is 4400 MB, but it didnt install jack in the beginning. Hope my console isnt screwed up =\

  • LOL no the first time you put in Oblivion it loads and installs 5638MB, for me anyways.

  • hmmm i dunno I have the regular edition, at somepoint there was a really long load time, but it said nothing about installing anything.

  • @i60
idk wats up with that game i rented it and it took 10 of my Gb i was like WTF it only says 4400 MB

  • are the graphics naturally bad and kinda laggy? lol i know it was made some time ago, there not horrible but i just want to make sure its not me

  • @164

??? I never had any issues with lag and the graphics are the complete opposite of bad.

  • Keysersoze10033

Thanks for the free updates guys, I’m glad I bought this game :).

  • I wish more developer had foresight like this. Just because Sony did not require certain standards, developers dropped the ball. Then they blame Sony for their laziness.

  • Awesome stuff

    :-)

  • you are the Best guys…no other developer working like you…an example for anyone…

i buy all your next games

  • I might buy Burnout.

  • But one thing I didn’t like was how they took out crash mode. I loved earning money destroying stuff!

  • criterion is a great group of devs. they really love us and treat us to sweet stuff lol

  • Burnout is one of the coolest games ever. The seamless interaction with online and offline gaming is truly astounding. I’ve met so many peope playing burnout and with these new updates i am sure i will be spending much more of my free time back in paradise:)

  • @171

That’s what Showtimes are for! Showtimes are the new Crash mode.

  • This game is a FUN!!!thanks for the great updates…

  • HOLY COW! This is great news!

Love the game and now that trophies will be retroactive, I do not have to start over. Just keep on rolling, baby!

  • Now this is how post launch support should be. Props to Criterion on this, I wish some otehrs would follow their lead. Insomaic and Incognito have been great, but Inifity Ward, care to step up to the plate? (No rumble or trophies.

I haven’t purcahsed the game yet, but I’m highly tempted once the trophy support patch comes out. So release that and it’s one more sale to you guys.

  • I’m one of those “less” die hard female gamers out there and usually I don’t play many race games… until Burnout Paradise. I downloaded the demo in the sense of “oh well another race game”… Duh… wrong! It blew me totally away and ordered the full game as soon as possible. This game is so totally addictive and I’m trying to get the Elite License now. My compliments for such a fun, addictive game which is in my opinion accessible for a broader public than many other race games out there. I’ve also bought the PSP game and am planning to buy other versions as well.

Now I’ve been informed we can expect an overload of updates… for “free”! How many devs do that? Not many I can think of to be honest. Plus trophies… you’re spoiling us, but hey you know girls … they like to be spoiled :-D

Can’t wait for the patches to download. Keep up the good work and good luck!

Grz, from a Burnout fan from Holland :-)
    Anouschka

  • P.S. Give my regards to DJ Atomica, Or whatever his name is :-D

  • SWEET!!

  • So, In Game Music too with the patch?! :o :D

    @MrNeroDante:

I’m really not sure, but I think so. They said a while back that they were going to add in-Game Music for the next update. And this is the “next update”, so yeah… Let’s hope so. :D

  • Sorry for the double post.

    @MrNeroDante:

I just checked to confirm it, and yes, Custom Soundtrack will be added in the update. Can’t wait!

  • @Xulap

  • I just picked it up yesterday. With all of the support this game is getting and always loving the Burnout series, I just had to buy it, this game rocks.

  • July 10th, New Update :)!

  • I like the soundtrack already as it is, but then again… I’m kind of a rock fan :-) Rats, only 100 events to go to get my Elite License… Hope I can clear the most “before” the first update.

  • why cant the game have 0ff1ine mu1tip1ayer. that was the best bit ab0ut the 01d games, d0 they assume we a11 1ive 0n the net theses days. i take my c0ns01e and games 2 mates h0uses and end up 1eaving burn0ut behind as it isnt a s0ciab1e game any m0re, its an 0n1ine haven f0r the meet and add friend n1ine and n0t an actua1 friend u n0 in pers0n. Give us they j0ys that 3 and revenge had 4 hurting ur rea1 mates pride face 2 face.

  • so whens the update with the trophys in coming, as i know its the update on the july 10th, just wondered so peeps dont ask where the trophys are on the 10th. lol

  • Burnout Paradise has only a small automatic Game Data safe that’s correct. About Oblivion that is also correct, the game saves the Game Data automatically.

As you know, you can remove game data as long as you don’t remove your save data. I do this as space on my HDD might be too tight. When I feel like playing the game again, all it has to do is install it so I can continue with the game. When I did this with Oblivion I noticed the very long loading time at the beginning, but as soon as I played more, the faster it went and saw I the Game Data of Oblivion getting up from 128MB up to almost 5GB. In the beginning of Oblivion you need to choose race and stuff so I guess the game take there its time to save the game data on your HDD.

Yeah I’m also curious to know, I’ve completed almost all the Stardust Trophies, only 2 to go, so would be nice to have the tr Burnout Paradise trophies option… fast :-D

  • Iloveplaystation

I will get all burnout paradise trophies :D
WOOOHOO I got everything completed xd

  • You don’t know many trophies can be entirely different than from the events and trophies you’ve earned in the game.

  • The last Burnout game I was really in to was Burnout 3 on Xbox and the custom soundtrack support sucked because of all the loading. I got Revenge for the PS2 (thanks for progressive scan!), but didn’t play it nearly as much as the other.

After seeing all the updates you guys have done and are planning I’m going to go get Paradise. I don’t have much time to put in to the game, but I want to support developers that care about their userbase. Thanks for the hard work!

  • This is awesome but a *friend* of mine stole Warhawk. I think Ill *visit* my *friend* later this week.

hahaha xbox 360 customers have to pay 50 billion dollars a month, but now we have trophies for FREE
    THANK YOU

  • Well Criterion, looks like these updates will provide you with a whole bunch of extra customers, good on ya :-D!
