Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 2: Trophies

570 0

Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.

Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.

PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

  • BUZZ! Quiz TV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
  • NBA 09 – PS3
  • PAIN
  • PixelJunk Eden
  • Resistance 2
  • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
  • Warhawk

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.

The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.

Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

  • Excellent Work Sony, Its about time. Its already been mentioned but please implement it so we can check our profiles/trophies from a PC and not just from my PS3. Thank you.:-)

  • @cubehouse — but then whats the point of trophies if its not standardized?? Also since the developers HAVE TO make achievements for 360 games how hard is it for them to port them to PS3? And how hard is it for SONY to tell developers that they need to add the support for future retail games?

  • Ugg… one of the reasons I left the 360 camp was that achievements were interfering with my life, lol. Now Sony’s out to capture my soul as well!

  • Well i think it will take a while before tropys are used on top titles such as MGS 4 however it is nice to see the ball rolling.I find getting stuff like this addictive. It will give me reason to go back and do things in games i never wanted to before.Great job!

  • GREAT! love it!

  • Rock on. In game XMB and trophies definitely kick a bit of ass.

Don’t think I’ve commented here before, but maybe I have. In any case, a request of mine, which is the only thing Xbox 360 has that I ever wanted, is the ability to have player 2/3/4 be associated with their own profiles while playing a game.

So if I were playing Tekken or something, it wouldn’t show “LonestarF1 vs LonestarF1” when I’m playing against a relative. Same within sports games, would be nice to have my profile against theirs.

Definitely no complaints from me though, nice additions.

  • PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!!

  • Few very important questions:

If a player has already done something that he should be awarded with trophy, will the trophy system automaticly see this from example his online profile or savefile?
For example I dont want to go uncharted trough again on hardmode.
Will the the players who have already conquered everything in the game, be shafted and forced to do it over again?

How will 2.40 react to ppl who might abuse savefiles from gamefaqs for example, to achieve things they havent really done. Will savefiles be account attached, or marked?

2.40 seems really nice, but the questions above make me feel a bit uneasy towards the trophy system with my pile of Ps3 games.
(21 currently, and publishers dont seem to slow down with the good games :S)

  • I LOVE YOU GUYS! Playstation Family is awesome. (crys)

  • I am wondering how the trophies are saved. either on to your hard drive or the server. Because I am going to upgrade my hard drive and i dont know if the trophies will still be on my account if i earn some and then get a new hard drive.

  • wow, fantastic i want it now!!!. Custom avatars! messenger or google talk!!!

  • @Aprisaiden_22; I never realised Xbox games required achievements… would explain why I’ve seen so many…
However, if it is optional, I think any devs who don’t support trophies are being stupid.

  • This is great, I really, really hope all future games incorporate this, because it will be a huge factor for many now.

I mean, if I am stuck, don’t know if I should buy XA or XB, I would rather buy XB if it has trophies in it, etc.

Also, anyone at Sony who is reading this, I BEG of you to put the update up for download on the official PlayStation website as soon as you can. Sometimes it comes days after the release online on the PS3. I am our of country atm so I cannot get online on my PS3, so please let me DL it from my laptop as soon as possible. Thanks a ton!

  • plz plz make the trophies retroactivily plz because i dont want to waste entire games in playing an doing thing i have already done like finishing uncharted in chrushing or beating resistance in super human ,devil may cry in dante must die , grand theft auto, call of duty 4 in veteran (the epilogue in was impossible )or even harder i just finish mgs4 for 4rt time and i have got the 40 emblems plz propouse to the developer ,otherwise it will be awful to re replay mgs4 for the big boss emblem , it was the hardest thing i ve ever done in games plz
propuese that big games have retroactive trophies unlockable by the already existing game data plz plz

  • @110

    Yeah, include Windows Vista also…

  • I think trophies should need to be earnt again… otherwise I might be downloading a lot of complteted save games tomorrow…

  • I hope MGS4 is patched, another reason to play through again.

  • is there a limit to how many trophies the devs can put set by sony?

  • i dont know if this has been answer but will titles that have already stored data needed for trophies such DMC4, Uncharted, and MGS4 retro-actively award them.

i can understand if titles that never stored any of this extra data didnt but titles that already have this info built into the save files should be retro-active.

  • I like this new SONY’s ‘soon’…
A while back the SONY’s ‘soon’ was like 1 year .. .and now is like 2 days.
i mean july 2nd.. its sooo cloooseeee.

  • I have 2 questions:

    1. If a game is patched will it check my saved game for trophies i have already completed or will i need to play through the game again to get the trophies?

    2. Will the system only allow trophies from saves created on your system? Seeing as how easy it is to download a complete game saves i would hate for somebody to have the same level as me if i took my time completing each trophy and they just downloaded an 100% complete save and got the trophies that way.

  • … i wish we could some replies here…

Some people have some reasonable questions.
    1) Is trophy support mandatory…
    2) Is cross-game voice support in in-game XMB
    3) Jeff – any chance you could find out if SONY could give us ‘PS3 gamer tags’… basically just copy what 360 owners have and ill be happy…

So those are some questions … now for a suggestion.

Since the in-game XMB does not support various features such as playing video’s or viewing photo’s or changing user could we get an option in settings called “In-game XMB”. With “User — ON/OFF, PHOTO — ON/OFF, VIDEO — ON/OFF”. It would help those of us whom would like to quickly navigate the in-game XMB without going through parts of the XMB which are currently unused. Of course i understand FW 2.40 is finalized and it’ll take a while to implement … but could you suggest it please.

  • Will new games have a cool little icon on the back saying “trophy compatible”?

Something that just came to mind.

  • Aw man! Now I’m going to be going nuts waiting until Wednesday…. :D

Should be just in time for my second play through MGS4. Now I’ll have something to do during the ridiculously long cut scenes…

  • That looks great! And the levels (even though I don’t really understand it all the way) looks interesting. The only thing I’m disappointed about is that MGS4 isn’t supported (yet). Hopefully there’s a patch soon!
And how are you going to get trophies for Warhawk? It’s all online, unless it uses the ridiculously-hard-to-get ones in-game. No one would get platinum for that one!

  • Alright i have a very important question regarding the SONY conference at E3. Will we be able to stream the event live from the ps3? i’m not sure if microsoft is doing it with the 360, but they already did that sort of thing few months ago. I cannot remember what even it was, (i guess GDC08), 360 gamers were all watching the event from their 360..

  • “I think trophies should need to be earnt again… otherwise I might be downloading a lot of complteted save games tomorrow…”

I think its better to just but a simple mark to the savegame files, that cannot be removed. Like:
    Savefile created by: Player1

The trophy system isnt yet relased so its still bossible to add info on the savefile whose the original creator of the file.
And only files that have your account name on it will be registered to trophy system.

who knows there might already be info on them already.

  • FINALLY!!!!! THE GATES ARE OPEN!!!! THANKS

  • Very nice! I’m pretty anxious to install this firmware update.

  • F’in RIGHT DOGGY!!!! bin waitin for this bad boy for AGESSS lol…..still dnt understand y it wasnt included from the get go cos i saw it previewed b4 ps3 release but oh well …better late than never :D:D:D::D:D:D:D:D:D

  • Just two questions on this entire shebang:

Will you be able to have cross-chat with In-Game XMB?

If trophies are patched for an old game, say Ratchet & Clank, and we already completed that game, do we have to play it again (I really wouldn’t mind playing it again though, as I love all R&C games…)?

Thanks guys, July 2nd will be noted as one of the greatest days in PlayStation community. Just like when PSP 2.00 came.

  • Yes!!!

  • This is awesome!!!

  • Pretty excited for the Trophies. I’m one of those completionists that loves Achievements Points and Gamerscore on the other system, so this is a big draw for me. Should add a lot of replayability to a game that I would normally be finished with after one play through.

  • 2 Questions:
    1. Will older games be automatically updated and add the trophies you’ve already beaten? I don’t want to have to beat the games again.

    2. Will you be able to access Media Server music and have it play in the music player?

  • GO SONY SILENCE THE HATERS IM GLAD THIS CAME OUT B4 E3 LIK SUM PEOPL SAID IT WOULD:D

  • Eric!!!

Thank you guys!!! This update can’t come soon enough!!! YAY!

One question: Will the throphy system tranlate into home?? For example all the thropies I accumulate from now until Home will then be able to be seen from Home???

    Thank you!

  • I must admit, neither in-game XMB or Trophies are of particular interest to me. If they were, I’d have bought a 360 long ago!

However, will the Trophies aspect be available to view online via PC from launch, or in the future? Since these things are based on little more than ‘bragging rights’, there seems to me to be little point in them if you can only view them on your PS3.

Also, one thing I’d like to see added to in-game XMB is the ability to start a chat with a number of friends, which can then be continued when launching a game. This would overcome the problem of the quite frankly lousy comms quality in many PS3 titles.

The original Resistance still has by far the best quality in-game comms of any title, while others are very rough, with some (Warhawk, Motorstorm, Rainbow Six Vegas etc.) being so bad as to be practically unusable – something which I find unacceptable.

I realise Sony don’t want to dictate to developers in the same way as Microsoft do, but I feel you should insist on a decent level of comms before allowing games to be released, or at least provide some standard code which developers MUST use, in order to provide a consistent, high-quality experience.

  • Destroy the xbox this will. live is dead, long live the new Online King of consoles: The PS3. weird that you’re updating the FW on a Wednesday? tis weird indeed, unless it’s because your Canadian contingent is off for CANADA DAY on Tuesday. Happy Birfday to my Country. Happy IGX for the rest of us.

  • As a 30 year old gamer i should not get excited…..but i am….whooooo hooooooo

    nice

  • Don’t the FW updates usually come on Wednesday anyway?

  • @ 140 NO THEY USUALLY COME ON TUESDAY BUT WHO MINDS THE WAIT

  • Hi

I`m looking forward to receive the firmware update, but i have an issue no one said nothing about, recently: when are we gonna get subtitle (srt, sub) support for AVI files?

Please? Pretty please? I don’t think it’s such a huge effort.

  • I love the Profile Card.

    Q) Will it possible to view the profile card via PC, and let others see it online via PC?

  • YEAH!!!!!

  • cant waitttttttt

  • Now I can finally tell all of my 360-loving friends that I have just as many features as they do, but all FREE!!! July 2nd will be a day long remembered for the PS3 but don’t stop here, Sony, In-Game XMB isn’t the last step, neither is Trophies. The PS3 needs to keep evolving in order to stay in competition with all the other consoles.

P.S. What would we do without Firmware Updates.

  • Man, I never expected to wake up to this. I figured the next walkthrough would at least be later in the week. Instead, it’s the firmware itself that’s releasing later in the week. Eric, Jeff, you do realize that on July 2 if it’s not up by midday you’ve basically sentenced yourselves to Spam Hell, right? I would’ve kept them in suspense… But I’m sadistic like that. XD

  • @Eric Lempel:

I have some questions about the in-game XMB.

    1. Will I be able to use cross-game voice chat, i.e. voice chat while I’m playing GT Prologue and my buddy is playing Metal Gear Solid?

    2. Will I be able to go to the internet while in the in-game XMB?

    3. Does in-game XMB work with PS1/PS2 games? i.e. Can I listen to my own mp3s while playing Shadow of the Colossus or Final Fantasy VII?

    4. Will I be able to change resolution, themes, and sound settings during in-game XMB?

    5. Will downloads continue in the background while playing offline PS3/PS2/PS1 games?

And finally, one question not related to in-game XMB…
Can you give us Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid 1, Einhander, Resident Evil, and Resident Evil 2 on the U.S. PS Store… you know… since they’re on the Japanese store? (also, Tomba, Ergheiz, and No One Can Stop Mr. Domino…? Sorry, I guess that’s 2 questions.)

  • Hi guys, I’m from the UK and this is my first post on the US blog and I have a simple question about the 2.40 firmware update that I hoped someone could answer. All of the music I currently own runs from an external USB hard drive to my PS3, so the question: with the 2.40 update can I also access music in the relevant section from my external hd or is it locked to the systems hd?

    Thanks, Sleeve
