Firmware (v2.36) coming soon, (v2.40) to include trophies, in-game XMB

A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

  • I said the ASIA model, not the JAPAN model. And I’d only be interested in playing Region 0 PAL DVD’s

  • Why are so many people thanking Sony for finally providing what should have been available at launch??? Having these features so late in the cycle is meaningless as there will now be a segmented game library (those with and without trophies and probably some not utilizing XMB in-game fully).

  • bravo i have to say i think i love you lol:) thanks this is great new now i gotta wait for my ps3 to come bak to me from yellow light hell :(

  • yay….comment 400!!!!!!!!!

  • I’m glad to see the march of progress, but honestly, in-game XMB isn’t something I care that much about. However, as someone who recently experienced a hardware issue that necessitated replacement of my unit, there are a couple things that I would love to see:
    1) Allow multi-select for copying and deleting save files (PS1, PS2 and PS3). Copying one-by-one is TEDIOUS. Sorting/grouping PS1, PS2 and PS3 saves by game or date (on removable media) would be nice, too.
    2) When restoring a backup to a unit other than the one on which it was created, restore PS1/PS2 internal memory cards, “Copy Prohibited” PS3 saved games and PSN messages. I don’t mind re-downloading “content” like PSN games or reinstalling disk-based games, but any content that was created by me should be restored. The “Copy Prohibited” PS3 saved games (notable offenders: “The Godfather: The Don’s Edition” by EA and “Rainbow Six: Vegas 2” by Ubisoft) are particularly annoying, as they can’t be saved to removable media nor can they be restored from backup to a replacement unit – if your PS3 fails, they’re gone forever.
    3) Preserve the modification date/time stamps of files copied to/from removable media. This would make manual backups of saved game files much easier to manage.

Thanks for working so hard to make the PS3 better all the time!

  • Finally a post where people won’t comment

“BUT WHERE IS IN-GAME XMB?” Here it is. Thanks for the announcement.

  • Thanks for the confirmation, Sony.

But why not include whatever 2.36 is fixing on 2.40?

    :)

  • Cool, wonder if trophies will automatically be awarded for things you have already done in games.

  • Finally!!!!! Thanks A lot Eric for Sony allowing you to comment on 2.40. Now what we all need is a date of arrival. I hope it is not too far. Thanks.

  • I wonder if the trophies you are awarded have some type of “GamerScore” or something similar and if you are able to see your friends trophies on the friends list. That would make it some what interesting.

  • cant wait 8)

  • Sweet, hopefully we don’t have to go through updates 2.37, 2.38, and 2.39 first though. Just make the jump baby!

  • Wonder what will be changed after this update. Can’t think of anything else I would want?

  • To ISEMAN, I say Firmware V2.36 will be the last update before V2.40. I say Sony is just about finished with 2.40 and is testing it for bugs. I say we may see it at the end of this month. I rather see something being developed over time and have it functioning good than rush the release of it and have numerous bugs and problems.

  • I got a Trophie already!…My PS3! ;-P
The only thing after the v2.40 update i would like is the internet browser on the PS3 to be better;)
+Any chance of putting a feature that you can do ‘Incremental Back-ups’ to a external Hard disc drive when i want to back-up my PS3 stuff??? It would make it quicker and easier to back-up my PS3 stuff. ;)

  • @409 IndyStorm800
Well, we have to be realistic..
some isues will appear ,this is a huge update,(it has features that will be nice surprises), so its probable that a couple of games will have issues, no worry ,the most played games are the most tested ones.
so MGS4,COD4,GTA4 (what a lot of 4!) will have no problems.

  • Would is really end civilization as we know it if they actually bothered to list the games this update improves “system stability”?

  • It is great news that the constant whining from all the school children around here will soon come to an end. It has been so annoying to sift through all of that temper tantrum garbage for months. “but you promised it, and I want it, and I’m gonna cry about it, and I’m gonna not shut up about it until I get it.” I really don’t care about chatting with my little friends or listening to some mp3s while playing a game. But legions of people seem to want this more than anything. I don’t understand why this is. People had tons of fun playing videogames for many years without these features. I swear a good chunk of complainers don’t care either and are just jumping on the bandwagon because it is the trendy thing to whine about. Or maybe people just like to whine. I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy writing this little post whining about people who whine. If that is the case, so be it. Regardless, it is still incredibly obnoxious.

  • I can’t be bothered reading all the comments but did this update in any way affect all those launch 60gb PS3 owners who can not play GTA4? I know two personally and they are not happy.

  • Thanks. That is awesome news!!

Please, Sony, don’t lose perspective here. In Game-XMB is one step along the path and not the final destination.

If you want to know what your consumers want, you should start by playing on XBOX Live! and then trying to recreate all of it’s capabilities via PSN. Then, once you have the same functionality, make some improvements or enhancements.

Remember, today’s gaming is about social gaming, and you have to have the infrastructure (PSN-Live! with all features) there to support it.

If you build it, they will come.

Again, thanks… and keep your eye on the ball!

  • I hope we can fast forward music faster like on psp :|
    Seriously…

  • Looking forward to trophies! And like some said, hoping stuff achieved already could be awarded already, but I somehow doubt it. Especially very random stuff like in MGS4 let’s say you have roll over 10 guards in a row with the drum can.. I don’t think the game records this as of now.
I kinda wish I’d get a trophy for going through Big Boss hard on my first playthrough though.

Now to what I want next in an update. More video format support. Matroskva (.mkv) files are not currently supported and is getting more and more popular. Also the h.264 codec.. although I guess it could be tricky seems it’s under Apple’s ownership.

  • @412

No it would’nt, but usually these kind of fixes are for PS1 games that have already been released (and if you don’t have any problems with any PS1 games then you probably don’t own the game that requires the fix) or for games that will be released during the next PSN update, like tomorrow.

  • @401

You can get around the save game copy restrictions by doing a full hard drive backup to an external drive or flash device so long as said device has enough free space.

    It can be found under:
    Settings–>System Settings–>Backup Utility–>Backup

The cool thing about backing up/restoring from this utility is that it copies and restores EVERYTHING under Users, Settings, Photo, Music, Video, Games, Network, PlayStation Network, and Friends. :)

IMO, it’s one of the PS3’s best features.

  • ¡¡ 420 !!

givin’ the people what they want. HIGH·fives to all!

  • @414 Kenshin001
Maybe you can email Rockstar and ask why they only tested GTA IV on 40GB PS3 (ok,its the ‘official one’)

  • Awesome! I assume that Home is not launching with the trophies and in-game XMB?

I just got my PS3 a little over a week ago. I have to say that I came in at a good time!

  • This will improve out gaming experience so much. . . I hate when friends send me messages and I can’t respond to them until i’m out of the game. . this will hook me up. Thanks

  • What exactly did this fix? I wish they wouldn’t give vague statements saying “improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles” but not listing the titles and the problems.

GTAIV still locks up and it’s very frustrating

60GB PS3 locks up every 10-15 mins, I can only finish 1 mission before it locks up if i’m lucky. If the mission takes more than that it locks up in the middle of it, Completely unacceptable.

  • @424

I have a launch US 60 GB PS3 and I have GTA4 and it has never froze on me.

  • So let’s get this straight, we are at 2.36 for updates and now it seems as though we are going in .o1 increments. so as far as 2.40 coming out there are three more updates(2-3 months each)between now and 2.40. Correct? Lawl, I would actually die laughing if that is the case. Really I know alot of people want in game xmb ( rename it please ) like “Cross Console Communicator” or “CCC” for short or “PS3’C” or even “C to the power of 3”.
For me it’s not really important anymore. I have come to realize that when in any online game, there is no “PAUSING” therefore how would you be able to chat and change most settings(unless direct video chat was enabled). It will be great for offline or single player modes. But all in all not particularly great for online. Sorry but that’s just my opinion.

As for Achievements or awards, that is a great idea as long as some of them carry with them DLC for users to use in said games that they got them in.

As for the update last evening, can you enlighten us as to which titles had more stability added?

This would be nice to know as some games that I no longer play due to online issues might have more interest to me and to others.

Thanks for both of the updates. PSP and PS3

p.s. my Phat Black Launch Day PSP is no longer reading updates correctly. Any chance of a point in the right direction?(sans fee);)

  • @ 425

Same here. No problems at all!

  • oh yeah

    FREE TIBET!

  • i have launch 60 GB and no problems with GTA, but im not saying your problems are not true. They are indeed very true and I feel like [DELETED] for you guys that i can play and u cant. It really is an awesome game and it’s a shame R* goofed on that aspect. All i’m trying to approve is this…it’s everywhere…not only are problems on 60gb, but on 80 and 40 too, as well as the xbox 360. So i mean, the 60 gigers might be more uh, less immune to the problems.

  • Yes, I clicked on update after midnight last night and was shocked to see 2.36 download. Heard it may also include a security update, so not sure why some are complaining as I for one, want to have a secure system.
Plus, I’d rather have all these updates than have an obsolete system within a year or two.
Thanks Sony and thank-you for 2.4 finally coming out. 2008 is turning out to be a fantastic year for PS3 owners.

  • Pretty weird news really. “2.36 is coming soon, and 2.40 is coming soon.” No dates, nothing tangible, and no replies to all the inquiries.

Sony should hire me, I tend to say and do all the wrong things too.

  • Very Nice!

Now who does the cat’s tail wag for?

    Love you SONY!

  • IN GAME XMB BEFORE SOCOM RELEASES!!!

By Sony’s time frame, (soon)= 2.4 will probably be released next year sometime.

Additionally, i want to be able to watch Netflix internet movies on through my PS3, why can’t we do this yet????

  • I think that it wasn’t a secret that it was coming sooner or later but now when is it coming.

  • #434

It doesn’t say anything about 2.40 “coming soon”.

  • Nice to finally hear it….

    Woohoo…..

  • Excellent!!!

  • Great News!

    looking forward to 2.4

    Thanks

    SPARDA

  • thanks! i absolutely NEED in-game XMB and trophies. come on sony, i really can’t wait until the end of this month or E3.

how about you give us in-game xmb and trophies now, and then your video service at E3?!? (or if you’re REALLY nice you’ll give us all 3 right now?!?)

  • Yay for finally getting what we asked for! Quick question. Do you guys see in the future an update that will allow PSP games to be playable on the PS3 via USB Mode? If not USB Mode, how about reverse Remote Play?

  • Awesome. Awesome.

  • @grognard66
its because they announced it so what if it took a year and a half what are you a 360 fanboy?

  • Awesome. Does this replace Playstation Home?

  • How long is shortly?

  • It’s very nice to finally have official confirmation. Thanks for the heads up :)
