A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

Can’t wait for 2.40! Thanks for the update!
@337
the format war was over before Profile 2.0. it’s just a bullet point on the PS3 specs because like I said there is almost nothing that supports 2.0 and even less who care about it.
By “basic feature” I mean an essential feature, not an easy to program piece of software. People need to be able to talk to their friends without having to quit the game. Just watching someone play a 360 should have told Sony that it was a pretty important part of being on a community network. the PS3 should have started out on a level playing field with the 360 with it’s network features and just got better. Right now we are still playing catchup and over a year and a half later that shouldn’t be happening.
Apart from game bug fixes the PS3 shouldn’t need monthly updates. The features that people expected based on playing other online games should already have been there. After that anything else is just icing. And I can wait for icing.
Im curious to see how the trophy system works
I just hope this update makes Tekken Tag Tournament fixed for the 80 gig.
I’m getting read to dl the update but I’ve heard rampat reports of it bricking launch ps3’s and that scares me. I have a 320gb launch ps3 and it’s loaded to the gills with content.
Aside from that, I see no use for XMB other than to access the display settings for games. Oh, and for games like motorstorm because they have the worst music ever in them, og and Gta4 with its garbage rap and off kilter rock music that isn’t even classic, just crap. If in game music can be used then, yeah, I’ll use it to trudge threw garbage games like Motorstorm with its atari textures and Gta4 with it’s abysmal pop up, poor gameplay engine and craptacular muisc.
Anyways, here I go to brick my system with this update. I’ll be back.
This update only improves system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles.
I wish they would give us more details with 2.40.

I have a launch PS3 (60gb) and it didn’t brick my PS3.
The 2.40 update won’t magically make custom soundtracks work with games that are already. Those games (like GTAIV & Motorstorm) require patching.
i hope it tops the XBL’s XMB and the xbox’s achievement system so we’ll finally have sumthing besides MGSIV to rub in their faces.LOL. PS3 IS IMMACULATE!
As I’m writing this comment I am downloading firmware 2.36. I also think firmware 2.36 is groundwork for firmware 2.40.
@ Venom
That is why I said “IF”
This sounds awesome. But when can we expect an 80GB White PS3 in the US? I know there are still alot of us holding out on buying a PS3 for this reason, including myself…
umm… yahoo. finally something good coming out from all of this. 2.4 is most deff coming out around E3. but knowing that sony is giving official word about it is leaving me at ease. of course unlike other people i could never curse out sony because i know in the end for the most part (at least with the ps3) they do keep the consumer in mind. the psp is another story and seeing as how i don’t have one i could care less. even though people are crying about lack of single player and rpg games, a lot of people don’t realize that for the most part with these next gen systems to have them without a community base online world is pretty pointless. you can get so much more with ur gaming online than you could just doing single player and rpg. don’t get me wrong i love them but i can deffinitely live without them
@331,
the 360 shipped with out in-game messaging and custom sound tracks at launch! it took about a year+ or so before all that was in place! hell i still don’t have HDMI ports on my “old gen” 20gb 360. but it has it now, and the PS3 is making strides as well.
all is good in the world of gaming.
V2.4 sweet,Totally.
Screw 2.36 and rls the damn 2.4!

What rampant reports? That’s a bunch of bs.
Looks like we’ll have to wait until E3 for 2.4, which is really disappointing.
@expy
check the offical forums. I’ve seen 4 topics so far and atleast 10 people who said the same thing. That’s pretty rampat to me, considering the time of night.
Luckily mine is running fine after the update.
How is it possible that the 2.36 also helps “improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles” and it takes like forever to download? besides i have an error everytime i got to 30% or something like that…
Thank you so much Sony for finally bringing the in-game XMB, well not yet (lol). HHmmmmmm PS3 is starting to become a good console, i think games are still a problem. I love you Sony, lol. Thanks Eric.
Great news!!! My nephew just bought a PS3 and has been asking me about in game XMB. Now I can tell him that it is definitely coming.
On a side note, any idea when more 80gb MGS4 bundles are coming? My Dad is itching to get his hands on one.
awesome
but when?
@gamesblow
Luckily? After only 4 threads and 10 people “allegedly” having a PS3 have theirs brick and you’re saying you’re lucky? Please.

How old is your nephew, and how old is your dad?!
Another update I’m waiting for is PS2 Backward Compatibility on 40 GB models.
:)
Nice update and its good to keep rumors down by announcing the forthcoming firmware too
Nice to get many updates on my new PS3. I feel that Sony is doing a good job on it.
Eric, why can’t we have a simple add-on search feature in PS3. You know it becomes fairly tedious to find out a song/pic or video out of the thousands that we have stored on PS3. An update on this one will highly be appreciated and also Level 5 decoded videos are not supported.
I agree with Deepsleo (#375), a search feature would be very useful for browsing for a certain photo, video or song. Could even be brought into the PStore front.
I still can’t play my copy of Wipeout 3 (SCES 01909) even after the FW 2.36 update.
This isn’t even the beginning to what Sony has in store for us in the future. Good stuff. Buckle your seat belts because Kansas is going bye bye.
Does anyone know if you can download the 2.36 Update from your PC from anywhere yet? I can’t seem to find it on Playstations website and for some reason my system won’t update.
New feature,
Go open up 2-6 windows in ps3’s web browser, close the internet in 1 step ,then open up web browser after playing game, or anything else. All windows are put back on the pages they were on.
Thank you for finally commenting on FW 2.4.
Just a quick question. Are there going to be any hidden surprises included in FW 2.4 at all?
Finished my 2.36 Update already :P
Thank You SONY for Updating my PS3 for me :D
– Some Update’s I want to see on PS3 is RSS Channel feed like PSP so I can lissen to all my RSS feeds from Insomnic Games and Hoping that Maybe some day will get a Playstation Official Blog Podcast or at least some way to Read New Post’s that come out on (https://blog.us.playstatoin.com/) on PSP and on PS3.
– To get Skype on PS3 that way we all Can get in on Voice Calling ;) and I know that Skype wouldn’t Pass Up a deal like that to get money from everyone so anyone could call friends on there Cell Phones for a cost of Skype of Course! ((and would be Optional Download like Folding Home of Course))
And Others I’m Keeping to myslef for now ;)
@ iceman0987
OLD feature.
I don’t understand why they don’t release which games are being stabilized. It feels like users are being blindsided. Why not released a well informed details? I don’t think the company can be hurt by any means.
Please answer my question.
Thanks,
Spoon_burner
i believe the 2.40 firmware will be available today you know why i would say that, if you haven’t notice this blog they don’t mention a specific firmware with out being alive with in a day at most.
OMG!!!OMG!!!!OMG!!!…. Ahhhh…
Nice job thanks for the heads up.
Hope we get 2.4 soon~
PLZ ADD:
-increase the friendslots (50 are way to little)
-better ps3 browser flash support
-invisible friendlist status
maybe
-usb flash stick RAM support! to increase the ps3 ram. (maybe for the browser or for the ps3? :)
Awesome! I’m really curious to know what the definition of soon is? Hopefully really soon as in the next week.
I wounder why it takes such time… lazy programmers ?
*tear drop*
my money’s on that the reason they even released these stability update (2.36) is to improve the connection when using the in-game XMB. Like small patches to help with the final build of the in-game xmb or trophies. It just seems odd to release a stabalizer when 2.40 is comming soon… unless it’s for MGO’s lag problems, but highly doubt they would do that.
2.40 FTW!!
2.36 = Yawn
^ agreed
Can we please, Please, PLEASE!!! get PAL DVD playback incorporated into the next US firmware? Asian models have had it since 1.6!
Please!
@sidow
I have a Japanese PS3 and i can’t play any PAL Australian Region 4 or Region 0 DVDs on it.
