PSP (PlayStation Portable) v4.00 Update

332 0

I wanted to give you all a heads up that a new PSP system software update, v4.00, will be released soon, adding Google Internet search directly to the XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface.

This new upgrade replicates the Google Internet search experience, delivering the same search results that you’d get at www.google.com. And with a search history recall of 20 items, Web searches couldn’t be easier.

After you download and install the firmware on your PSP, click on the XMB’s Network icon and then the new Internet Search icon. Enter your keywords and then let Google’s algorithms do the work. You’ll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot. Googling something on the go has never been more convenient on your PSP.

Another new feature delivered through the 4.00 update is the ability to change viewing speed during playback of videos stored on your Memory Stick PRO Duo, so you can speed through or slow down what you’re watching. To do this simply press the up or down directional buttons while playing a video. Enjoy!

  • Absolute GARBAGE, what a huge disappointment. STILL no DIVX/XVID support? Until the PSP gets REAL video support it’s a joke of a portable multimedia device.

Throw us a bone Sony, it’s bad enough there are no big games in the pipeline for the PSP at least make it a real portable multimedia device.

Well maybe in a year and a half when they hit firmware 5.0.

  • @140
    Please do troll..
Any word on the whole PSN tie in to the blog yet Jeff? I think we really need it here. There’s so much garbage on this blog.

  • Yeah, SOME feedback on in-game XMB would be appreciated.

It shouldn’t be too much to ask for considering that a lot of us spent $599 US dollars on something that might need a $149 replacement Blu-ray drive in the near future.

  • Good update, but the PSP needs a PS Store, not from a PC. And what about Divx? That would be nice. Anyways, when can we see an update for the PS3?

  • Sounds nice, but i think its more important for PSP to be more evolved with PSN. For example i think there should be an actual PlayStation Store on PSP, as a native app, just like how the PS3 does it now. Also i think being able to import your PS3 friends list onto your PSP would be awesome.

  • I forgot to add this and i dont know how to edit a prevois post ( if possible at all )

To silence the hardcore PS3 fans, i think its time Sony at least say something abotu Firmware 2.40 ( and not just ” its coming ” ) I think Sony should talk alittle bit about it, what it will bring and when to expect it, just so everyone can chill for a bit.

  • The PS3 & the PSP need a better Flash Player. Very little things work on the browser that use flash.

  • Sorry guys, but this update seems to be some type of joke!

    What about Divx support?
    What about integrated PSP Store?
What about YouTube native support or Google Earth support?

in front of a single (advertisement) Google shortcut?!?! I think the April’s Fool has passed away right now…

    Salu2

  • Nothing about the PS store?

  • I quote from other forum:

“Google, yeah! What everyone wanted. Maybe its about time Sony’s research department started listening to the consumers and their ideas.

No YouTube? How pathetic, its already been programed and made for those who have the other type of firmware. I thought this company hired smart people, if a bunch of regular computer developers could make YouTube for the PSP then why can’t people who are hired by Sony as a job do it?”

This is really pathetic. Come on Sony, you can do much better than this…

  • This is great idea. I hope this speeds up the searching process. Kind of like what you do with Mobile Gmail app on the Blackberry. Check out this to see what I mean, http://www.google.com/intl/en/mobile/mail/index.html

  • … tough crowd today.

  • Can we add better Flash Player support to the list of future features? There’s a lot of flash games and flash content on websites that don’t function at all with the PS3 or PSP.

  • Hey Sony, how about playing PS2 games via Remote Play?

  • wow, two very useless things.

Come on Sony, stop wasting yours and our time with these useless, pointless functions and release some good, useful updates.

If you’re out of ideas, make a poll or something asking US what WE want. we all put down what we want, and the ideas you see that you think can be implemented, get put into a voting poll and the top 5 or more items that gets voted for, you guys work on and release!

LISTEN TO THE FANS! STOP MAKING STUPID DECISIONS! the following things we’ve heard are a waste of time. STOP BEING LIKE MICROSOFT AND NINTENDO, WE DONT WANT THAT!

    1. break away dual shock 3 (ie wii re-off). WE DONT WANT ANOTHER CONTROLLER!

    2. cancelling two very big and popular games, 8 days and The Getaway. Huge mistake. MOST GAMERS THINK OF MP AS A SECOND THOUGHT! WE WANT MORE BIG BUDGET SINGLE PLAYER GAMES!

FIRE YOUR NEW PRESIDENT!!! Everyone is starting to greatly dislike him.

    3. Qore psn mag. Everyone is laughing at you guys for this. Its a huge waste that no one really wants, especially to pay for it. And you insulted all of use with the 2 week later Socom beta invite for buying it. that was dirty.

    4. Delaying Home. If it is ment to be in beta phase forever, then release the damn thing already!!!!

    5. Only selling a 40 gb PS3 and abunch of limited bundle packs. Most people want the 60 or 80 gb PS3’s back. This was another big mistake by you guys.

    6. DONT MAKE PROMISES OR ANNOUNCEMENTS YOU CANT OR WONT KEEP! IF you say you’re going to do something, DO IT AT ANY COST! Again, you guys are a laughing stock because of this.

Hell, us fans could run SCE better.

  • Personally if I wanted to be impressed, I’d be asking for the ability to transfer files between my PS3 and PSP wirelessly (using the remote play interface?)

I’d also ask for the ‘albums’ feature the PS3 has for games/videos/etc. so I could organize the stuff on my 4GB memory card nicely, as well as the ability to use album art on AAC music transfered from the PS3.

  • is there gonna be more?
this is so little comparing to the time weve waited

  • Beyond what many people really wants… what make it more perfect to me the PSP just this thigs…

    1. A youtube thing, homebrew scene already have it working all perfect.

    2. PSP store

    3. Facebook application

    4. More codecs.

    5. Unified PSN friendlist.. you know, to have friends and send and receive message like the PS3.

  • yea, i know!

  • I was expecting more. Come on Sony!!!!!

  • That would be great

  • I hope that all these little updates eventually become standard for the future iteration of the PSP handheld (assuming that there will be a PSP2 down the line).

PSP2 should have a touch screen interface like the iphone (making it easier to type stuff).

  • VenomX said:

“Google search feature directly into the XMB? That’s sick!”

Next time you guys at Sony have a Sony employee post to talk about how awesome the firmware is, full disclosure would be nice.

Because there’s quite simply no way a thinking human being would say this. We already HAVE Google search. In the web browser. This is not ‘sick’. It’s a waste of flash space.

  • More functions is always welcome! Thanks for this update.

I never complained about firmware 2.4 for ps3 but come on give people some infos even if you are not releasing it the day after you announce it.
I’m starting to hate leaving MGS4 to see what my friend sent me…

  • OK, but where the heck is 2.40 for the PS3?

  • Sounds cool to me

  • Quit crying FreePlay. It’s a free update. Don’t get all butt hurt from my opinion.

  • WHERE IS THE DIVX SUPPORT YOU PROMISED US??

  • Nice! Go sony!

  • A free, USELESS update.

Oh, and thanks for confirming that you’re a Sony employee.

  • I mean, this is great and all, but where is our In-Game XMB? From a customer standpoint I really don’t understand what is taking so long. Is it the seer fact that it can’t be done? Or are your employees just focusing on other things?

Any sort of news on this would just make the gaming world explode. I mean, develops have said they have gotten it in their dev kits, so why can’t we have it on our home systems? Is over 2 years not long enough to develop this?

  • Wow, awesome. You mean now I don’t need to both click the web browser AND go to my favorites? 1 less step out of 2 = a 50% decrease in steps it takes to use google on my PSP…. In all those wireless hotspots that aren’t around…. Where is 2.4 for the PS3?

  • almost every comment here is about in-game XMB (2.40) Come on, release it already.

  • Like I said before I hope this update has hidden features not mentioned, the two update features mentioned aren’t worth the time in downloading / using.

  • i’ll be brutally honest.. i hate google.. i never use it.. i rarely use search engines as it is, but google.. i hate it.. why couldnt they make their own search engine..??

im still figuring out my PSP, so, yeah.. itll be awhile before any of this makes sense to me..

  • What’s so hard about clicking on the internet icon and going to google from there? Was this really necessary?

  • Why is this taking so long?
I don’t take soon as being hours later
    2.40 better be coming!

  • Boooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

my PSP is so behind the times at this point who the hell needs Google in the XMB???? especially when its just bookmarked….thats just terrible…with my iPhone the PSP takes the back seat!!!!!!!!

  • wasted time on a wasted feature when the PS3 firmware is in DIRE NEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow 4.0 is a big one, do the searches just open the interent browser?

  • @Se7enwolf

tell me how you really feel…LOL

  • @XD9

LOL hell yeah man. iPhone PWNS the PSP’s web browser. It’s going to be even better when I pick up the new one this July.

  • Wait until Sony announces 2.36. You guys are going to be pissed.

  • Everyone who says PS store for PSP Can’t you access that through remote play????

  • Yes, you can access the PS3 store on the PSP via remote play.

  • I don’t have PS3 ^^ Too expensive on Brasil.. I’m waiting the prices going down.. If i convert the price, it costs about $1000 dollars.

  • Hey Jezer29 there is a feature for the psp so you can listen to music in game, but it has to be hacked.

  • Plenty of constructive criticism from the loyal “Playstation Nation”, and still no official feedback.

It’s almost like you guys at SCEA don’t even care what we think and want to stay in last place.

BTW Eric, why isn’t SCEA a member/contributor to this?

It would seem to me that it would be in SCEA’s best interest considering how flash on the PS3/PSP web browser sucks and everything.
