PlayStation Around the Web: What We Read

87 1

Happy Father’s Day! Gaming is just as much of a father-son/daughter activity as throwing the ball around, as demonstrated in this drawing by 7-year-old Ronan Dunne Figueroa.

PixelJunk drawing

Proud papa Dan says:

I came home from work last Wednesday and my 7 year old son said, “Dad I made a drawing for you today at school.” He handed me this cool drawing. He and I have been playing 2 player PixelJunk over the last couple of weeks. Needless to say he likes it.

As you can tell from his drawing, his favorite towers are lasers and fire. He did include some gold coins, canons and lots of arrow towers. My favorite is how he included the monster bar at the bottom that shows which monsters are coming next.

Anyways, here’s what we read this week. Lots of (gasp!) MGS4 stuff. As always, feel free to share your favorite reads in the comments below. Comments may take longer than usual to appear – it’s Sunday, after all.

  • @Shuhei Yoshida

  • I’m glad I’m not the only person disappointed by the canning of Eight Days.

I understand if London Studio are busy with Home, but Home should never, ever take precident over games.

  • @Shuhei Yoshida
I am looking forward to hearing from you on this blog. Your role is a greatly important one with SCE as the head of worldwide studios. Your plans for the future and what you are going to bring to the table at SCE are two things that I am looking forward to reading about.

    @OneironautZ
“The majority of your core fan base are people who enjoy Story Driven single player.” Nice statement, this is what every gamer enjoys the “most”, yet online head shots are great to. :)

  • Wow… Fatal Inertia coming to US PSN Store after being on Japanese & got out on the 360 for ages? LOL
Anyways, PS3 Sales are going to be so up when the moth ends..

  • Hey gamesblow, here’s a concept — paying for an exclusive doesn’t make your platform look better at all, it makes your platform look inferior, or else it would’ve been an exclusive WITHOUT the payola. Like MGS4 is. Like Drake’s Fortune is. Like R&C: Future is.

Here’s a clue: the games requiring the high performance of the PS3 are already exclusive to the PS3 without having to pay anyone off.

  • maluraq, while I do agree in theory, that games should be exclusive to deal with the hardware’s strength, that’s not how the industry is at the moment because of Microsoft’s straegy of buying games.

MGS4 is exclusive because Kojima is a PS fan.

Uncharted and Ratcher are exclusive because they’re first part.

To compete with Microsoft, you need to open up the money bags and buy new IPs and get exclusivity on games that used to be PS exclusives.

  • @ Maluraq

You still don’t get it do you? I can see you still haven’t done your homework on Sony and their in house developers.

Naughtydog is owned by SONY!!!! There is no favor there, got it? Good. Insomniac doesn’t publish their own games (YET) Sony does. Again, Sony is doing the favor for them. MGS4 isn’t exclusive. Trust me.

    Do some research.

  • I can’t believe that there are actually people defending Sony. Just recently they came out and said that online components are their main focus, which means less RPGs and more casual crap and shooters.

The lack of exclusives doesn’t help either, as it represents that third parties don’t give a damn about the PS3 and that Sony isn’t willing to spend money to get such exclusives.

  • Zoroz you are 100% right on the money. 3rd party doesn’t care cause Sony doesn’t care. Why should Capcom, Konami and the rest give a damn about the ps3 when they know full well where Sony is heading in the world and it’s as far away from their hardcore base as possible.

Anyone who can stick up for Sony in this aspect are so brainwashed it’s not even funny. I am so sick of deathmatches and shooting people running away from me online it’s not even funny.

Hey, Sony do something new for an online game for once! Capture the flag, death matches??? We haven’t been sick of these since 1995, have we?

When I see sony bring out their absurd Wiimote knock off at E-3 I am officially giving up on them, selling my ps3 and that’s that.

It’s almost as if Sony has a nintendo complex. They want to do whatever nintendo wants to do and it’s lame. I’m good with the controller we have, sony. Stop messing with your market and give us games to play, instead of making new add on junk that amounts to just that. JUNK!

  • I have to be honest. This was one of the most disappointing gaming weeks I’ve ever had. I feel Sony has completely neglected its giant, die-hard JRPG following. Sure, a few SRPG’s are coming–VC & Disgaea 3 (which I don’t like strategy RPG’s) but the only exclusive, traditional JRPG’s are Final Fantasy XIII, White Knight Chronicles, and Final Fantasy vs XIII–that’s unacceptable. No exclusive JRPG’s released after a year and a half and only 3 announced with no release dates.

So, although I still love Sony’s quality and the rich tradition I’ve had with their hundreds of JRPG’s in past generations, I’m forced to support other consoles to fulfill those needs now–I’ve waited long enough,I’ll not wait any longer.

It’s a sad day for this Sony fanboy. Don’t think that a couple games is enough to please your JRPG gamers or you risk losing them all. It’s a weakness in your line-up that you’ve refused to acknowledge–time to step up and do something about it.

So don’t take my constructive criticism in a negative way. I give it so that you’ll know there is a huge, avid JRPG fanbase out there begging for a reason to fall in love with the Playstation brand again.

  • ….What Sorrow880 and Zorox said!

  • I could care less about In game xmb if there isn’t anything to use it on. I want deep, involved single player games. I have “REAL” friends in my daily life and co workers and companionship from my girlfriend and my cat. I don’t need to have online gaming to make me feel like I’m not alone in my room when I play games.

Online gaming is a ploy to try to make the lonely disenchanted gamers feel like they’re apart of a community. All it is.

I’m disappointed in sony’s move to not do anything with the ps3 but give us FPS and online junk! Where’s the games!? Where’s the solo adventures we can only take ourselves? Sometimes it’s much cooler to act out the role of a hero on your own and not have some sum of 8 to 32 ass diggers in your ear.

Sony give is Single player games. All I have to say. Split your divisions up to offer everyone who buys your system something. 14 million ps3’s out there and all 14 are hardcore gamers, not casuals. Gamers who buy more thna 1 or 2 games a year, Sony. Think about this when you’re lubing us up for the next insertion.

  • well, it’s one thing to focus on online gaming and another to totally lose touch with your fanbase. Which is what appears to be happening. Of all the next gen consoles I dropped $6oo+ tax happily thinking that Sony would continue to give me what they have. A Solid well versed library of Shooters, RPGs and Action/Adventure games. What a fool I once was. Now I’ve got a PS3 that sees very little use. For starters the exclusives are far and few between. Secondly, most, if not all mutli platform games are better on the other console so I play them there. Also, the achievements. Sony really needs to get on the ball here. Screw Home, achievements need to be implemented already.

A lot of people feel that single player gaming will die out. To them I say rubbish. Us single player gamers will be the ones forced out. And for what? To get more casual, social gamers who buy one game every year or two to play online? If online gaming rules the world I’ll stick to NES-PS360 and just keep playing the games I have along with buying used games for those systems. Online gaming will only grow but in my lifetime [29] there’s always going to be people who want those single player games…

Anyway, to make a point on someone saying Sony wants to capture the casual audience. To them I say Sony already did. It’s called the PS2. They’ve been playing the casual card for years w/ the PS2. And until the PS3 can get in that price range to target casuals they [Sony] have no hope of capturing that audience. Sony knows this, as does MS. Which is why MS is pushing hard to get that casual audience. They’ve got software in the works and out, and they’ve been trying to get that price down to compete with the Wii and capture the casual audience as a secondary console to casual gamers.

whatever the case though Sony, you HEAR ME!? You need to get the ball rolling. Achievements and RPGs are a much NEEDED thing on the PS3… Same can be said about single player games. Not everything should be about online. Get back to the basics. You’ve nailed the last two gens and now you’re falling apart?

  • I notice that a lot of these points are valid and will likely be ignored.

The people that have bought the PS3 at the current prices, they’re not casual gamers, they are the hardcore. The same hardcore that kept the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 alive until they reached mass market price.

Unless you also plan to knock the price of the PS3 down a great deal for your crap Wii-mote knock off, no one will buy it. THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BUYING THE WII ARE BUYING IT BASED ON HYPE, PRICE AND NAME, NOT JUST TO WAVE THEIR ARMS ABOUT! Same to Microsoft, STOP IT.

Basically, get your act together. You didn’t release Singstar, Eye Toy and Buzz and all that so soon into the PS2s life, because casual gamers are more conscience of price.

The only people buying the console are hardcore gamers and, at the moment, Microsoft are covering the needs of hardcore gamers a lot more than Sony are, even with the numerous first party devs.

What’s the point in even having so many first parties if you’re not going to let them make games rather than self-indulgent applications hardly any of us wanted and you’re only going with because you hyped it so much like Home?

Man, I wish I worked for Sony somewhere high up.

    1. Cancel development of Home for PS3, have it as a system feature for PS4 AT LAUNCH and ascept it’s too daunting a feature to impliment for PS3 and too late
    2. Eight Days and the Getaway back on track
    3. New Jumping Flash! and G-Police disc games, Destruction Derby and Vib Ribbon PSN games
    4. Force devlopers to use PSN IDs for games – I’m looking at you, Konami
    5. Scrap any plans for a Wii-remote knock off

You’re not stupid, I just think you’ve completely lost focus.

  • RPGs are whack… Online gaming is where its at. Keep up the good work Sony. Nobody really wants to play those terrible games, except for the 5 or 6 people on this blog. And unless they buy a couple hundred copies a piece, then its not worth it.

    WHERES MY UPDATE!? (XMB)

  • If I ran Sony for a day this is what I’d get done & in legal print so it couldn’t be changed back the next day.

    10 – Secure 5 3rd party exclusives a year.
9 – Get Eightdays & Getaway back on track.
8 – Make PSN games with more depth and longevity. there is no reason why these games are all beat within 5 to 10 min at 500 mb a pop. Nes games were longer and had more depth to them and they were on like 23kb carts.

7 -Call to arms for RPGS. Drastically. Bring back Legend of Dragoon, Wild Arms, Alundra.
6 – Only 2 FPS could be released a year on the system since they’re all the same.
5 – Online aspects would have to come on a separate disc than the single player game.
4 – Single player games would be greatly emphasised.
3 – Guitar Hero/Rockband/whatever would cease to liter the PSN with it’s shallow content.
2 – Sequels could only be released every other year for quality control.
    1 – No wiimote/motion sensor/virtual space junk controller ever!

It’d be a perfect world in Sony land.

  • Heavenly Sword 2 axed as well?

So, Sony just don’t care about making games anymore?

  • Sony did it again! Heavenly Sword 2 is now offically dead! What the flying F*** is going on over there Sony?

Eightdays, Getaway, Heavenly Sword 2… Care to let us know what the hell you have for us after this year? What, more casual crap and wii inspired motion controls. What a bunch of ASS!

  • I’m so glad I bought my 600 dollar Ps3 at launch to play 10 to 20 min games of online deathmatches and to watch idiots play plastic guitars and play singstar and buzz!

What a great system, only thing is I could of bought fisher price toys that cover all this at half the cost, you morons!

Sony, why are you killing off your system? Why are you suffocating all the NEW IP for casual junk no one is going to buy!!!

Hardcore gamers buy games, Sony… Casuals don’t!

  • No offense guyz but Heavenly Sword was terrible…absolute D-List rip off of GOW…im so glad it got axed…

maybe developers will get it through their heads and stop making games for the PS3…then when SONY cries like a 2 yr old cuz they’re flagship multimillion dollar system doesnt have the games its competitor has then the PS3 can get a “port” copy of the game rather then doing it right the first time and getting a game made for the PS3 and “ported” to the competitor…one day SONY will learn…one day…just doesnt look like it’ll be soon.

  • Sony, it’s about time you drop the price of your console. Even Mgs4 isn’t helping your sales and what’s worse, Sony is probably shiftig their focus over to casual games because they think Big games don’t sell… Wake up, Sony. Games sale, your system is just over priced! & if you think anyone is going to buy your 400 to 600 dollar system for some plastic ass motion sensor controller you’ve got cooking up to compete with the wii, you’re wrong.

The ps3 is a flop. Cut your loss.

  • Wow, a lot of whiners in here, and whining over a couple games that barely even existed no less. Seriously, you’d all only ever seen the concept trailers for the games, but you’re broken up about it?

Meanwhile, gamesblow is trolling over price and the megahit that is MGS4. I’d say I’d like to see these sales figures you seem to have that say MGS4 isn’t helping sales, but it’s clear they came from somewhere very smelly. PS3 a flop? You… are… pathetic.

  • @71 gamesblow…

oookkkk… you know that the MGS4 bundle was out of stock so quickly right?

Do you know too that even in Japan sold 77,000 something in that week of PS3 consideration that every week the ps3 only sell like 10,000 or less?

Do you a favor, just stop to attack the ps3 or MGS4 this month and don’t let yourself look stupid… and I’m the one who almost always was agreed with all you say here… but now you are like the people that said that MGS will never sell 1 million in the first day and now they sell more than that now they say that isn’t impressive at all…

  • I am not sure if I should comment on this or not but Gamesblow is making a lot of sense. I am so mad to hear now that Heaveny Sword was canceled. I never knew it was being made until today but it was such a good game you knew in time there would be a sequel and now that people find out there is one it gets canceled. I am not sure if this is because of Yoshida or not but as soon a He came on board all I have been hearing about is canceling games people want and making more casual games instead.

I payed 600 plus when I got my PS3 at launch and I thought I would have seen many great games for the PS3 but not that many are using the strengths of the PS3. I hate to say this but if I knew what I know now I would not have bought the PS3 when I did.

So please stop with the casual stuff and give the people what they want. Which is games.

  • I love their response to this matter.

“We are dedicated to all of our exciting titles on the way, Motorstorm 2, resistance 2, Little big planet and home”

Oh, a slew of games we already know about and have seen a million times over. no thanks, Sony. Give me those games and introduce something new. how about it? Something without a number attached to its a$$

  • get your facts straight. Ninja Theory has already said they have no intention of doing Heavenly Sword 2 atm. They’re current goal is a new IP, and moving which has been in the works for some time now. Sony didn’t axe Heavenly Sword. Ninja Theory nixed it. Not to say they won’t do it in the future but right now their current objective is to create a muli platform, totally new IP. If Sony wants Heavenly Sword they can either wait it out and hope Ninja Theory wants to make it down the road or have someplace like the Santa Monica Studio create it. Problem is that in doing so they’re drastically changing Heavenly Sword…

to each his own but Heavenly Sword was far from terrible…

And those saying who cares about RPGs. To each his own. Don’t waste your breath saying nobody cares because A LOT of gamers do. The sad thing is that outside of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts RPGs don’t sell well. But when they also cost A LOT less to develop and don’t require a million units sold; except for Final Fantasy which is a beast…

  • I swear Sony is trying their best to ruin the Playstation brand. Look at the last year and a half. This is becoming sad.

Does Sony, the idiots running it, know that the PS3 will never be a mass market item at its price of 400, 500 and 600 bucks? Do they know that it is never going to be the wii? Sony is putting all their efforts into garbage like Buzz, Singstar & eye toy games that they are completely taking a squat on their REAL user base.

Where are the damn games, Sony!? Where are the games that are 30 and 40 and 60 hours? where ar ethe games that take advantage of blu ray? Where are the RPG’s? Where the hell are the original IP? Where are they Sony? Why don’t you just go ahead and come and tell us why the hell you’re doing what you’re doing.

You are never going to reach an audience at 400 bucks, let alone 500 and 600. Never! Give up on your idiot dreams of making some knock off motion sensor remote because you think it’s going to help sell your system. It’s not going to.

Phil Left for a reason. That reason was the leak sprung in the bottom of Your boat Sony.

  • @ gamesblow – don’t you have something better to do then to troll this blog to no end? I’m shocked you haven’t been banned here yet. Oh and way to stay on topic! I love it. Give me more… you’re a drama queen dude.

    peace,
    Lh

  • I’m the number 2 poster here and a huge success. I’m just letting Sony know that their number 2 poster is a little upset by their actions as of late. Sure this blog isn’t directly responsible and I am certainly not holding Jeff, Grace or Eric responsible for any of it. I do however feel Sony owes us more than what we’ve got from them.

I bought my ps3 for Eightdays. simple as that. I saw the tech demo and decided against buying the box 360 that day. I have every right to be upset.

  • The picture is adorable! :)

    (and nice list of links!)

  • gamesblow is one of the few guys who actually know what’s going on. There is a serious lack of exclusive games on the PS3 and yet people still defend Sony.

Look at the rest of the Summer release for the PS3. The only major exclusives are Socom and Buzz (if you call that major), all in September.

Now for the 360 the major exclusives are Supreme Commander, Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, Too Human, and Viva Pinata.

Look at the difference, how can anyone call this the year of the PS3 is beyond me.

  • ha ha, nice to see what you read jeff. also good to hear you on that podcast, but i’d really like it if you spill the beans more…like amazing things (you could have told us about 2.4 from earlier…)

  • Thanks for including these now as a regular article Jeff. I can’t keep up with all the site you guys check, so its nice to see a wrap up here on the blog.

  • @gamesblow

Well there you have it, with Eight Days cancelled, for the sake of everyone here on the blog, go sell you PS3 and stalk the 360 blog or w/e they have. You’ll be doing us all a favor.

  • @ gamesblow

nah, don’t listen to reson8er. He’s just jealous we don’t have Ninja Gaiden II and he can’t afford a 360. :P Lol, j/k…

Seriously though if you can afford one you should buy one. I love my 360. If it weren’t for having both a PS3 and 360 this past Winter would’ve been miserable for me and gaming. Of course when you normally beat a game in 1-5 days that doesn’t help either.

  • MGS4 is definatly the best game ever, keep the news coming !

  • I was reading this article on “Is the PS3 for the Elderly”. Thought it was a good, and maybe true read.
