Feeling Puzzled? echochrome Demo Coming to PSN

Hello PlayStation.Blog Readers! My name is Kumi Yuasa and I am the Associate Producer for the upcoming PSN game echochrome. This is my first post on the blog, and I’m excited that my debut here on the blog is to announce that free PS3 and PSP echochrome demos will be available for download tomorrow on the PlayStation Store on the PS3. The PSP demo version will also be available for download on the PlayStation Store for PC.

Perhaps you have read about echochrome here, here, here or even here. There is a lot of excitement for it – N’Gai Croal of Level Up even wrote, “…as of last E3, the 2008 game we’ve been looking forward to the most is echochrome.”

It’s a fun and addictive puzzle game with really elegant and simple graphics. The concept is inspired by the famous MC Escher artwork, which explores infinity, architecture and impossible constructions. In echochrome, you control the camera and perspective on an infinite canvas, guiding a mannequin figure by carefully tilting and turning the level to create a continual pathway, allowing your character to walk safely through the design. Puzzled?!? Check out this video and you’ll see what I mean!

There is no single way to get through a level in echochrome. You and your friends will find different ways to clear levels so each time you play will be different.

The demos you can download tomorrow will take you through a brief tutorial and give you the basic idea of how to progress through the puzzles, but I wanted to also tell you what to expect when the final game is available for download in May. In addition to the 56 exclusive levels for each of the PS3 and PSP versions of echochrome (112 unique levels overall), you will be able to create your own puzzles from scratch and share them with your friends, or even the world!

On PS3, you can upload your created levels to the developers through the game’s interface. Once uploaded, your creation will be considered by the developers for a future downloadable content release. In other words, if selected, people around the world could be playing your level!! Additional content will be available from Day 1. Initially, however, these levels will come from Japan or Asia since the game has been out there for a while already. We’re not exactly sure when we’ll start including US players’ levels, but we’re excited and waiting for customized levels from all of you!! You can also share the levels with your friends by sending your creations directly to them over the PlayStation Network. Stumping your friends is REALLY fun!

And for the PSP version, you can share the levels you create with other people in your area via wireless Ad Hoc. Cool, right?!?

Well, there will be more to come on echochrome soon, including some great wallpapers for your PS3 and PSP. But in the meantime, be sure to download the free demos tomorrow and give them a whirl! And let us know what you think!

  • I cant wait for this game. I played a demo of it from the Japanese store a while back, it is a day 1 purchase for me! I love the sound of sharing custom created levels to.

  • Very nice. I tried the Japanese PS3 demo a while back and enjoyed it quite a bit. So is it safe to assume that both the PS3 and PSP versions of the game will be $10 each?

  • Sounds awsome! Cant wait to try them out! Creating levels on the PS3 then sending them online sounds cool to!

  • When can I buy the full version? I’ve been sold since the Japanese:English Demo.

  • thank you Kumi Yuasa, I look forward to the release!

Ha! I couldn’t have put it better myself. (Oh, let’s not kid ourselves: I could. I simply don’t care to.)

Five Star Post! This will definitely make this update worthwhile.

  • This game has always had my interest. Level creation FTW! I’m guessing the tools to do so will come with the game but please correct me if I’m wrong.

Looks good though, I just hope you don’t charge too much for it.

  • @ jeigh

I can only picture you saying that aloud with your eyes closed

(reference to Southpark episode Smug Alert!)

  • Seeing this reminds me of Phil. *cries*

    Anyways, looks great!

  • Kumi, quick question. Is this a different demo than the one on the other regions’ stores?

    • Hi, EvoAnubis. Demo will be the same throughout the regions. It contains the tutorial and three levels to try.

  • Great first post Kumi!

One quick question, are the levels that we make interchangeable? (ie if I make a level on my PS3 can I transfer it and play it on my PSP)

  • Can’t wait! I’ve been looking forward to Echochrome ever since it was announced last year.

Kumi, do you think you can give us a rough timeframe of when to expect the full game in May? Will it be early or late May?

  • I played the demo from the japanese store and I love it.
    It’s a great game.
looking foward to the full version

  • Great game, great post. Kumi, you are great!

  • Can we also share the levels we create directly with our friends either through the PS3 or by copying them out of the saved games folder?

    Yes, I blog — https://blog.mikebabcock.ca

  • This game looks wonderful. I will be picking this up for sure when it hits the store.

  • Thanks for the details Kumi! Hopefully we’ll hear more next week.

  • echochrome is on my must buy list of PSN games. The concept amazes me and the demo just wowed me. The music is interesting and the gameplay seems like it can be complex.

I will be buying this day one. Thanks for the details Kumi, it would be pretty funny if this game came out May 15th (my birthday). Then again, the sooner the better!

    • Happy early birthday to you!! I will have a more concrete release date next week, but I\’m sure it will make a great birthday gift for you! Enjoy. : )

  • I downloaded the Japan demo, this will be amazing. And to think that im such a texture whore, there is none in this game :P

  • I can say this I have been psyched for this game for a long time ever since I first saw it, I believe I will be glued to it and GTA:IV for months MC Escher meets Gaming = Nothing but pure fun.

Great job to you guys on creating a game like this, in a era of next-gen graphics you proved that its all about gameplay and innovation hats off to you big time.

We at TripleTags.com Can’t wait to review it too,

  • I guess if I want this game on psp and ps3 I will have to buy to seperate copies, right? I won’t be able to buy just one version for both consoles?

  • YES!!!! I’ve been waiting for this game since it was first introduced. I’ll possible be getting both versions if they are different.

    Good luck with it

    • Indeed, both versions will have completely unique levels and there is no overlap!
PSP levels are smaller than PS3 levels, but that does not mean they are easier to clear. : ) Enjoy.

  • Great Post Kumi! Thanks for such a detailed and intriguing explanation of the game!

  • The music in Echochrome is some of the very best I’ve ever heard in a video game, and fits perfectly with problem solving. Loved the demo, and can’t wait to play the full version.

  • Is there any possible way we can get the soundtrack for Echochrome?

  • Nice, I can’t wait to play it :)

  • Question…can it only be downloaded or will there be disc versions also?

  • Cool. Thanks for the answer. I already played the demo, then, but I still am highly anticipating buying this game. $9.99? Instant win.

  • “Additional content will be available from Day 1.” I hope this isn’t DLC you have to pay for. I don’t like when people do this. Detracts from the purpose of DLC. I’ll most likely be getting both versions (PS3 and PSP), so please don’t price gouge us!

    • The best of the PS3 user-created levels submitted to the developers will be distributed for free to PS3 version owners! So no worries. : )

  • Hi Kumi. Excellent game at a bargain price (both versions for $9.99). Got a question though: does it support remote play?

  • I am not sure about this one, I tried the Jap demo and I didn’t like it to much.

  • I will no doubt be buying this day one!!

  • is the demo the exact same as the japan one? also why doesnt it let you have FULL control when moving things into position. It sorta skips and takes you a while to place something where you want it. will this be fixed? or is it part of the gameplay?

  • Will the PS3 version support Remote Play?

  • Great news! After playing the import demo this became a must-buy for me.

In fact, Wipeout Pulse and Patapon were both purchased after playing the demos so more demos please! :)
