Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – Product Details Revealed!

295 0

Hi all! Since Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is such a huge release, with so many different promotions and packages, we thought we’d take some time to clarify the rumors and speculation going on out there, as well as break some news about what we’ll be offering.

In case you have not heard, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots hits stores June 12th, 2008 and is rated “M” by the ESRB. This is for all the different configurations of the product, detailed below, which includes: the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Standard Edition, the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition, the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” PLAYSTATION 3 Hardware Bundle, and the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition PLAYSTATION 3 Hardware Bundle. We’ll get to details on each of these below.

First, the “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2” free pre-order bonus offer DVD with MGO Beta Unique Product Voucher Code insert…

This is a special offer, made through participating retailers and store locations, for customers that pre-order either the MGS4 Standard Edition or the MGS4 Limited Edition. We’ve been receiving reports over the last couple of weeks that store locations have been making the item available as soon as they’ve gotten the shipments in. As of this writing, participating retailers and their respective store locations should be getting their shipments and making them available. Unfortunately, we don’t have any more granular information beyond that, so you really have to check with your retailer/store location of choice, see if they are participating, and find out when and if they will have stock available. Also, please bear in mind, quantities are very limited, so you will have to do a bit of “legwork” to secure your copy while supplies last.

The “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2” DVD contains extensive original video content, which primarily focuses on the interconnected history of the “Snakes”: Big Boss (Naked Snake), Liquid Snake, Solidus Snake, and of course, Solid Snake. Additionally, the DVD contains a compilation of the MGS4 trailers to date and a special Prologue video to MGS4.

An insert in the “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2” DVD case is your ticket to the Metal Gear Online Beta, containing the Unique Product Voucher Code (UPVC) and instructions on redeeming the UPVC to download the Beta client via the PlayStation Store when the download becomes available. The download of the MGO Beta will be available from April 17th 2008 to May 5th 2008 and the game play will be available from April 21st 2008 to May 5th 2008.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have heard a lot of questions from customers who have attained the “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2” DVD, particularly about redeeming their UPVC via the PlayStation Store right now. Let’s make this clear: you CAN NOT redeem the UPVC for the MGO Beta download until April 17th, you will get an error until then. Do not attempt to redeem your UPVC for the MGO Beta right now, it won’t work! You will be able to do so April 17th!

Second, the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Standard Edition …

MGS 4 Covershot

Yes, the image above represents the final box art for the MGS4 SE. Mr. Kojima and his team specifically designed the packaging art to convey his artistic vision for MGS4 – for all you MGS fans, this has been the status quo since the beginning of the franchise. If you have put in the extra effort to pre-order with a participating retailer/store location, while supplies last, you can also obtain the “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2” DVD with MGO Beta Unique Product Voucher Code insert (detailed above). This product, of course, includes the full game of MGS4 as well as the Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack”. What is an MGO “Starter Pack”? We’ll get to that in just a little bit below, suffice to say, it is a full and complete multiplayer component of MGS4. Additionally, exclusively available through GameStop, customers reserving the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Standard Edition will receive an exclusive MGS4 Art Book at time of purchase. This offer is good while supplies last, see stores for details. The MSRP of the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Standard Edition is $59.99 USD.

Third, the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition…

Yes, we just revealed another never before seen final box in this article, this time for the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition, which will be available exclusively through GameStop. The MGS4 LE contains everything the SE offers (above, yes, with the potential to get the “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2” DVD with MGO Beta Unique Product Voucher Code insert), as well as a collectible box with exclusive artwork by famed Kojima Productions illustrator Yoji Shinkawa, an additional Blu-ray disc containing two unique and never-before-seen Metal Gear Solid “Making of…” documentaries, and the MGS4 Soundtrack. Additionally, customers reserving the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition will receive an exclusive MGS4 Art Book at time of purchase. This offer is good while supplies last, see stores for details. The MSRP of the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition is $84.99 USD.

Fourth, the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” PLAYSTATION 3 Hardware Bundle…

Again, hot off the presses, a never before seen box! Of note, for the first time ever, the PS3 will be packaged in a white box as opposed to the typical black one, and of course, is also branded with MGS4 goodness! Inside you will find the 80GB PLAYSTATION 3 package (yes, the 80GB PS3 has been resurrected for this bundle), and will include a PS3 DualShock 3 controller – yes, the PS3 controller that rumbles, and the MGS4 SE (detailed above).

Fifth, the “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition PLAYSTATION 3 Hardware Bundle …

Sorry, no box reveal this time (we have to keep some surprises :-) )! We are confirming that there will be a North America offering of this VERY, VERY Limited Edition bundle! This is the “gunmetal grey” PS3 – the one seen selling out in a matter of moments in Japan at the KonamiStyle web store. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting product!

Lastly, sixth, we’d like to shed some light on “Metal Gear Online” and the MGO “Starter Pack” that comes with MGS4 …

From what we’ve seen here at Konami, there has been some confusion as to what exactly a “Starter Pack” is, so let’s put that to rest right now.

The MGO “Starter Pack” that comes with MGS4 (all configurations, detailed above) is a full-fledged, fully-featured multiplayer component of MGS4. It is not a “demo” or “teaser” in any way, as some have speculated. It comes packed with maps, weapons/items, an in-depth character creator – where your character can be personalized, and most importantly, customized – with special abilities that can be “leveled” and improved through experience, the SOP system, and much more. There will also be an extremely deep community experience through a specialized portal that will feature stats, communication, and other never before seen features – which we’ll dig into at a later date…

So, you may be wondering why we call it a “Starter Pack”, well, the answer is very simple: because it’s just the beginning. We have a huge slate of downloadable content planned for the game which encompasses new maps, weapons/items, and much more. Eurogamer has a fantastic preview up, which is a great primer on MGO, and details some of the unique features that show why it’s not just another shooter…

But, of course, if you’re one of the lucky few, you’ll be able to get your hands on the MGO Beta in just a couple of weeks (April 21st 2008 – May 5th 2008), and see for yourself!

Also, please don’t forget to check out the latest KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS REPORT from Ryan Payton at Kojima Productions in Japan!

And with that, we end this particular article. We’ll be watching the comments, so please let us know your thoughts, and specifically what you’d like to hear (we’ll do our best to address your burning questions, but please bear in mind, we’re really busy working on MGS4 among a lot of other great Konami games, so please understand we will not be able to get to everyone’s questions)!

Check back here on the PS Blog next Monday, April 14th 2008, as we have a very special surprise in store for you! See you next Monday!

  • @144: Yeah, I asked this on and got flamed for asking that question. >.>

I kept trying to enter the code and it said it was invalid.

  • Hey guys, i really need your help! if i order MGS4: LE from can i still receive the Saga2.0 with the beta code, and the art work and stuff?? because i’m not from the place, and i can’t pick it up.. can they still come through shipping?! 10x :)

  • Cool stuff, can’t wait to find out what’s gonna happen next week! Very excited for mgs4

  • Anybody happen to know if either of these PS3 edtions are backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games? I was finally going to pick up my PS3 earlier this year only to find that none of the systems were backwards compatible with the ps2 anymore.

So I have been holding off to find out if they will release a new one that adds it back in.

    Thanks guys.

  • Are they both 80 gigs, or is the gunmetal one 40 gig? If it’s 80 gig, I’ll let my friend know… Wow, that’s awesome.

  • I wonder if the limited edition bundle will come with the LE game? I pre ordered the LE, but I am very tempted to buy the Steel PS3 if i can get my hands on one and sell my Launch 60GB to a friend or something.

  • damn…you guys are just on a roll today with the incredible posts huh? ok ok…i see you SCEA.

great news awesome pictures can’t wait to pick this up. can’t wait to see if the finale for this series lives up to the name. i’m sure Kojima wouldn’t have it any other way. cool news.

  • I know it’s kind of late to ask this (being mere hours after the post and already four pages in) but what is meant by “resurrected” in reference to the 80GB? Please tell me it hasn’t been officially killed off, and without a backward compatible unit to replace it. It would be quite hard to defend such a decision. The X-Boys would swarm all over it. Please give me something to beat them back with! Please!!

  • Got my beta, ready to go.

  • man, this is awesome, i pre-ordered in gamestop :] i will get that art book :)
i dig more the LE box art but ive already preordered the standard edition, good thing i already the mgo beta key :]
be seeing you here on april 14th!!

  • This game is going to be epic. Can’t come soon enough.

  • I really don’t like the DS3 compatibility icon on the front. It should be smaller and on the back, or not on the box at all. DS3 compatibility should be the standard form now on. I’d rather have a notice when a game DOESN’T have it.

  • I love you Sony…Everything you have done so far has been perfect in all of your electronic departments. Keep doing what your doing and dont let anything change you!

I hope Nintendo or Microsoft doesn’t change how you guys do the PS4… I hope the PS4 is like the PS3, revolutionary, powerful media house, and expensive

  • Will be pre-ordering tomorrow (crossing fingers for beta DVD)

  • Is that regular edition cover supposed to force everyone who is sane buy the obviously better looking limited edition? just saying…..

  • This is pretty cool, I would really like to get the gunmetal ps3 but i wonder how availability is going to be.
Oh and for Jeigh, the 80gb WAS discontinued but I read in an interview that it was discontinued because they underestimated demand for it and they are supposed to bring it back.
As far as anyone wondering if this 80gb will be BC, why wouldn’t it be? Honestly. More than likely going to be limited BC just like all the other 80s.

  • I’m not really feeling the NA box art. Specially with that mustache. =( Oh well…
The LE and Europe box art is hot though.

  • Awesome news. The Gun Metal PS3 is sweet, to bad it’s destined to be a 40gig unit like the Japanese version, so it won’t have any PS2 b/c.

Bummer, if it was an 80 gig unit, I’d want it badly. Once again, 60 gig units are the best.

  • 360 looks better still

  • YO! to anyone like me looking to play through the old games before this one drops…i just went to GameStop to pick up my Vol 2 Saga disc and a dualshock 3 and found something PRICELESS!

(forgive me if i’m late) GS is selling Metal Gear Solid 1 (PS1), MGS2 and MGS3 (PS2) together for THIRTY BUCKS! i’ve looked all over for these games to play back through them! amazon, ebay, everywhere!

it’s MGS so it’s not off topic. lol. don’t know why there isn’t at least a line or mention of it in this blog post but thought i’d share for my fellow MGS enthusiasts.

  • woohoo now i can get my ps3 and mgs4 all in the same package!!!

  • That regular edition cover gave me chills when I first saw it. Looks amazing and cant wait for the beta.

  • mah, after reading it more closely it seems the steel ps3 will be the gimped 40GB…

  • Thanks for the info.LE for me…

  • I hope we’re getting Home on the 14th. Or in-game XMB. I’d be happy with either.

  • So sad I won’t be able to get the LE nor the Saga DVD vol 2 since I live in Mexico :'(
C’mon Konami, I beg you, please do something

  • woooow…i dun know why but..non-web based slapped me like a who huge fist. But it looks damned amazing sony thank you muchly…now can you get started ooooonnn…my PS3 giving me High Fives when I finish a level in Ninja Gaiden? LoL just kidding..damned bang up job though can’t wait for the next few updates. I’ve been missing the thursday updates though. My thursday’s have felt so empty. =)

  • I NEED that limited edition PS3 Bundle! I will buy nothing less, lets hope this one doesn’t sell out right away and leave me empty handed, let there be a preorder system for the love of Snake!

  • sweeet

  • @169

    homotown4life ;\

Well first the Limited Edition box art looks great, wield the Stander Edition does’nt.
LOL, just kidding both look great!

    Here go’s my question”s:

    1)Will MGS4 come out for Xwack(xbox)?
(You guy’s havent clerify that yet.)

2)Will you sell the Gun Metal PS3 over the internet too, or can we go to any retalier store and buy it their, when MGS4 PS3 bundle come out???
(Im asking, ‘cuz some of us still havent hustle all our money yet to pre-buy/order
    thru the internet.)

    3)Are both version of the 80GB PS3 bundle’s PS1/2 Backward Compatible???

4)Whats the price for the Limited Edition PS3 and The Regular version???

5)In case if some of us are not furtunet to get the Limited Edition PS3 Bundle. Is the Limited or Stander PS3 Bundle be out for a good wild or just a couple of weeks or months?
(Im asking so i know that i have enuff time to buy the Stander Edition after it comes out.)

6)Is the Standerd PS3 bundle going to be for a limited time also or is going to be out for a good wild???
(I know question #6 sound similar to #5, sorry.)

7)In what retail stores can we get the Limited Edition PS3???

Please if you want just answer me questions #3,#4,#6,and #7. PLEASE!!!

  • I’m glad to see the “starter pack” cleared up! GREAT news, I can’t wait until the 17th!

  • Here’s an idea to help you sell more units. Add something exclusive to the console it self. Like a picture on the PS3, it’ll make it much more collectible and rare. The bundle is boring to me, just the system and the game, could be better. With a MGS4 photo on it, at least you get bragging rights for owning it, and you can tell you bought the bundle and not just a normal PS3. This way, crazy MGS4 fans will always have a chance to grab the bundle, even if they own a PS3 already. Think about ;).

This dude, he wants the details for FF7 not MGS :-D

  • hie, I m a Frenchie, for explain my problem i read my text in french because my english is very very bad lol
Le probléme c ‘est konami Europe,
    NO COMMUNICATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awesome post! so, looks like the stand alone mgs4 package IS real. I thought it was different when I first saw it on other sites. oh well, i’ll probably get the ps3 bundle.

  • Sweet lord jesus I CANT wait to get my hands on MGS4.

Now that Ive seen both the LE and Regular covers Im tempted to buy my first LE edition ever lol.

    Get it out PRONTO Konami!

  • Very freaking nice can’t wait till this game comes out going to be awesome.

  • As much as I’m looking forward to MGS4 I have to say I’m disappointed how Konami handles it’s releases. More precisely I don’t like their choice of GameStop/EBGames as Limited Edition carrier because of this e-mail I’ve got today:
    “Thank you for contacting

The Bonus disc will ship with the game when it releases.”

In layman’s terms – GameStop will sent me the DVD with the Beta code AFTER the Beta is OVER.
I preorder the MGS4 LE online and GameStop basically scams me off my Beta code. Does this make sense? No.

It is futile for me to argue with the GameStop customer service agent who wrote the e-mail, so..

I ask Brandon Laurino or any Sony/Konami representative who reads the comments to bring up this issue with GameStop/Konami’s marketing department or whomever it concerns to FIX IT.

    I am very dissatisfied.

    Thank you for your time.

  • not-buying-incognito

I’m just getting the REG.. game but I am looking forward to the beta SEE YOU AT MY FEET….

  • Question regarding the soundtrack included with the LE.

Is this this just a compilation of songs from the game, or the full OST?

  • Thought Id Metion to anyone thats going to be In the Beta…

Im In the Beta also so hit me up if you like. That way we could form a group!

    PSN: Skater_Ricky

  • Two things:

1). The two MGS4 PS3 Bundles will release the SAME DAY AS THE GAME DOES ON JUNE 12th, 2008, right? It would be absolutely ridiculous to force Metal Gear fans [WHO DO NOT YET OWN A PS3] to wait an additional amount of time past the game’s release date just to be able to play the last game in the series – and be able to purchase both the game and the system at an affordable price.

2). Will the Gunmetal PS3 Bundle version in North America differ at all [cosmetically/box art, etc.] from the Japanese version? I already have the Japanese MGS4 Premium Package pre-ordered and I don’t need 2 of the exact same thing. I collect everything Metal Gear, so this would help me out financially to know the difference between the two territories’ Premium Packages.

    Thank you for your time.

  • Open Beta for Europe ?
    That includes spain right ?!
And the ones with a spanish account can play the beta ?!

  • I am really liking the Gun Metal Grey for the PS3 Very nice

Where can i get hold of that metal gear online artwork in a decent size…?

    It would make a wonderful PS3 wallpaper….

  • Well that should make all the darned questions we get every day about: Why is it only Japan, and the UK get new PS3 colors? Why dose Sony hate the US/UK?

That will shut the whiners up for a while till the In-Game XMB and Home cry babies start to spam this post lol.

  • Oh my god! Awesome! i was abit worried about MGO but thanks for clearing that out. Can’t wait to play MGS4 online. I’ll definitely buy this one!

  • amazing , open beta of MGO.
I hope Sony guys can post some more about that.
