New Blog Feature: Post Ratings

81 3

Today we’re rolling out yet another new feature to the PlayStation.Blog: post ratings. At the bottom of each post you will now see the familiar 5-star square-rating thing.

Post Rating Function

At first it will display the current average rating, if there is one. To assign your own rating to a post simply move your mouse over the squares and click on one. One square is the lowest, five squares is the highest.

We’re always looking for feedback on the content we post here, and obviously your ratings will help with that. We get a lot of good comments here on the Blog, but the vast majority of them come from a very small percentage of readers. Hopefully this feature will help empower those who aren’t comfortable composing a full-on reply to our posts.

Thanks, and happy rating!

  • Cool, now we just need to things

    1) A weekly podcast on this blog
    2) A blog post strictly related to in-game XMB and its release date.

  • @43,

The new lineup of iPods, the Nano, Touch, Classic or Shuffle don’t work on PS3. The Nano, Shuffle and Classic just freeze up the PS3 completely while the Touch just sits there and charges..

  • I’ve been putting this off for a while now, but I just wanted to say thanks for caring what we have to say, and I’ll agree with some of the people who have said that the videos posted on the blog should be viewable via the PS3 browser.

However, we’ve already come so far, and already we have so much that we don’t even have to pay for because the PS3 is amazing, I find it hard to complain about this at all.

  • What do we want? : In-game XMB!!!

When do we want it?! NOW!!!!!!

  • How about a little icon showing that you got messages? Right now you have be looking at the screen the moment the message arrives to take note of.
Also being able to see what the time is in the XMB without going to the time/calender settings.
That shouldn’t be so hard to fix =)
Fixing up the DivX compatibility would also be nice.

  • why cant we stream content from another ps3 on the same network? (movies, music)

  • What I want is to be able to use the PS3 to set up a PS2 network profile without having to fish around for a start up disc! I don’t have one! As well as that the ones you can get on Amazon are $60.00 and they ship from another store so there is no telling how long it would take for it to get to my house.

Please do this for us! It would be a major help for PS2 lovers who have online games and want to keep playing them! Also if you could make it so we can even convert our old profiles for PS2 games as well as use them on the PS3 for our PS2 games online it would be another major help as well!

  • Pretty nice, I will definitely use it. Thanks.

By the way, I use Firefox and I don’t see any issues with it messing with anything else.

  • Nice new feature of the blog!

@20: Thats awsome! Now the Info Board will be more active!

Now if only we could create our own Information boards and brodcast the announcement to PSN friends…

  • Weekly PSN update Posts should be fun. :)

  • Please give us in-game XMB!!

  • Yes, Sony, please hurry up and give us in-game XMB!!

  • Jeff said: “Really? How so? Looks ok to me. If you wanna post a frame grab someplace like a flickr account, we’ll take a look. Thanks in advance.”

It works fine now. Actually, about twenty minutes after I posted the comment I noticed that the problem no longer existed. :D

I submitted an idea for the rating images via the Contact Form, by the way. It wouldn’t let me submit the comment for some reason whenever I tried linking the images. \_O.o_/

  • Everything works fine now in Firefox.

BTW I just wanted to tell you guys that you are doing a wonderful job with the Playstation Blog and I love the fact that we seem more connected with the Playstation “insiders” with you replying to our comments and stuff like that. That’s one of the things I used to like better on the concurrent console with the Majornelson blog… but now it’s different. This blog is even better! That’s just awesome.

  • Yo Jeff, firstly I wanted to say that its very cool to c that you guys keep adding new cool features to this blog. I can only have respect for the way you treat you fans, thank you.

2ndly, I have a question if you can please add a comment/reply rating system like youtube has, that way, we can all vote that, in my oppinion, sick comments like “I WANT INGAME XMB!” can be hidden from view.

Well, you said you were open for ideas, maybe thats a nice one.

Oh yeah and one more thing, your HTML/php programmer should look at the “alt” attribute of that rating system, because if you didnt voted, hold your mouse on it, and it will say like “x STARS” lol… ;)

Like i said, nice feature, keep up the good work and i hope i helped you with this idea!

  • man, you guys sound like a bunch of five-year olds:
“I want IN GAME XMB!!!” I want HOME” “I want my PS3 to do my English and math homework” “AND I WANT IT NOWW!!!!! WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!”

man alive, give it up will ya? they KNOW you want those things AND THEY ARE WORKING ON IT. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to do computer programming? Heck, it took me more than a six MONTHS to program a replica of Microsoft’s default “calculator” program that comes with all their computers. Do you think it will take Sony just a few days to figure out how to get in-game XMB to work in the first place, let alone work in all the previously released games and make sure it doesn’t crash your PS3, crash the online servers of the games, or hack into the Air Force’s control centers and launch a nuclear strike on Redmond, Washington, United States?
And to those whining about Home, have you ever heard of a little get-together called the GDC? Man, give them a CHANCE to make sure their stuff works before they release it. Why did you decide not to get the “other console”? you didn’t want it to crash after two hours of use. Do you want Home to crash after 10000 users sign up? Do you want In-game XMB to format your PS3’s HDD? It takes TIME to make a successful prduct, and apparently you five-year-olds out there don’t know that. Well, LIVE WITH IT. You WILL get In-game XMB and Home when they are completed. Until then, STFU
    /rant

btw, nice new feature and good to hear that the blog will start appearing in the info bar. And jeff, could you knock a few heads around at Sony to get them to upgrade the PS3’s Flash support at some point? Thanks.

  • Hey thingg, they know you want these things and they are working on it!

    ;)

  • any info on when we’re gonna get Profile 2.0?

  • Why not stars? Try stars, though I don’t mind the squares.

  • this will be another feature i wont use on my ps3. just like the info bar.

  • I like how the Lost Planet blog post was booed

  • Can we get a place other than gravatar to input our avatars? I’ve tried everything and my avatar never shows :(. I’ve been commenting the blog since day one and my avatar never shows :(.

  • I wish there was an mp3 software for the ps3, plug and play, how itunes works on computers with ipods. I would like to plug my ipod into my ps3, but i dont because its not the same with xmb

  • I actually like the squares. Very aesthetic with the layout of the site. The vertical bars suggested by Draicus also look nice, but I don’t think they would be as functional. I can imagine those who want to rate precisely (i.e., precisely 3 out of 5 or 4 out of 5) would have some difficulty trying to figure out how many vertical bars are lit up to reflect their intended rating.

As for having the video be able to be displayed on the PS3… ever thought of sniffing the USER AGENT and, when a PS3 is detected, use a PS3-friendly video player? While I understand the usual goal is to code for the majority and accept the fact that the minority just get used to these little annoyances… it just doesn’t make sense to be in charge of THE “PLAYSTATION.BLOG” and not take the extra few minutes to cater to those who are actually using the PS3’s web browser. You may not control what the browser supports, but you can certainly control what the browser sees.

  • Great new feature! A couple of things:

    1) Activate words to block such as XMB. Even with statements saying the development team is working on it, people still find time to comment about it in every post as if it will suddenly appear.

    2) I like that you guys are working on pushing the blog posts to the info bar on the PS3. What would make it even better is if it contained a link for a user to reply from PS3. Though I will just stick with the posts pushed to the info bar.

    3) Mobile plug-in.

    4) I know you make a blog post but the PSN Store update should always be linked to in the “What’s Hot” section.

5} The Contact Us section should be closer to the top.

Thanks again for the great updates in making the blog more informative and easier to navigate.

  • cool update for the blog

these are the things I would like to see

Better playstation store downloads/ a different day when things are released on the store earlieir in the week add some arcade games like pac man tetris or something like that

    In game XMB of course/Home

demos for games like P.J.M. sky diving exct.. so we can tell if thier good or not

A better Interent its too clunky and you always need to run plugs on pages fix that

and a system update soon would be nice

  • Nice. this is the feature I voted for that one time we had the survey. Good to see you guys kept to your words.

  • I agree with #16 and #20

  • I agree with #76 psn need more games like Monopoly and Scrabble and etc. Jeff I hope titles like this will come to the psn in the future.

  • Aww, I thought we could rate comments, so that you could filter away the uninteresting ones (such as all those posts whining for in-game XMB over and over again).

  • Hey Jeff, nice feature.

May I suggest another feature you could implement to make it easier and more convenient for people to add comments. Make your blog entries auto-expand/load in the main page itself, so we don’t have to open a new page to read all of it. Also only include the comment box in the expanded entry, so we don’t have to read what comments others have posted unless we want to. We can always click the blog title or comments link to read them the normal way.

    Thanks. :)

I’m sure with clever bit of coding, AJAX and whatnot it shouldn’t too much trouble. :)

  • This looks great. Though I must say, one of the main reasons I never posted comments was because of the login process. Maybe if it was possible to tie the accounts from the playstation underground/ playstation forums to the blog, you would have more comments

  • Regarding videos on this blog…
I fail to see how using a flashvideo player that is compatible with the PS3 would make it less accessible to other users?
Check out http://gamersyde.com/stream_5791_en.html , it their videos work just fine in the PS3 browser (and on my Windows machine and Mac and Linux, heck even the Wii can play a lot of them).
Maybe you should ask them how they do it

  • The five square thing is good. It makes it nice and easy.
