Hey gamers! Response to this here PlayStation.Blog has been so impressive, that SCEA decided that someone needed to be brought in to help keep an eye on it full time. I’m that person. Really, I’ve been lurking behind the scenes here for over a month, but it’s time to come out and say hello.
Among other things, it’s my job to help connect those who create software, hardware, and peripherals for PlayStation systems, and those of you who play them. And I can’t do it without you, the faithful and passionate readers.
So keep those comments coming – we’re reading them! Also, please feel free to utilize the Contact Us section (on the right side of the blog) if what you wanna say is off-topic. We read that too, even if we don’t necessarily have enough hours in the day to write back to each of you.
In the near future, we plan on coming to you more and more, finding out what you want to know and what you’d like to see here on PlayStation.Blog.
As a lifelong gamer, and a PlayStation fan since the days of (the original) Twisted Metal, Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot games – I’m ecstatic to be here and to serve in this role. Keep me busy.
PS – shoot at me online: JeffPS
jeff rubenstein….when i was on the radio i wondered who was listening and now that i post on this blog i wondered who reads it at sony…now i know and i appreciate that they have a budget exclusively for the blog…tells me something about thE quality of the company. i downloaded the playstation network video and consider it one great advertising tool…is it only for download or are you going wide with it….its a grabber…..
I know I am at the bottom of the list but still hear me out…
1. Enable Guncon 3 backward compatibility (patch) with PS2/PSone shooting games (i.e. Timecrisis 3 for PS2 on the PS3 w/ Guncon 3)
2. In game music would be stellar
3. Any word on a US PSP tv tuner (its out in Japan now)
4. Any info on the Blu-ray Profile 1.1 update for PS3
5. Additional PS Eye functionality in more 3rd party games (Tiger 08′ and Burnout Paradise are the first)
6. Any GAP openings soon?
7. How do you apply for an internship/ job with SCEA in Foster City?
Im very pleased with sony’s community support. It’s good to know someones reading what you say. If the blog opened up a What Do You Want? it would help keep things off topic out of these comments. THose people who feel they need to constantly say: we need in game XMB. They could do it all day under, the new section. Also it would be better for you guys and help organize and cleanup this blog. I dunno i think it will work. Aight ttyl Jeff.
Any news on when the new patch is coming out to fix the problems I am having with Firmware 2.0 and subsequently 2.01. I can not play any games nor any DVD or Blu Rays disc now that I have done the update.
Any help would be great!

@ Those asking for dualshock 3, playasia.com will send them from Japan, I got a white one and I’m loving the Rumble.
Welcome Jeff! Can you tell us when the PS3 1080i issue will be fixed. Its been a year, we should have this issue already solved.
Jeff there was a patent made from Sony regarding a certain type of controlling content via wireless gloves.
I tried to find the patent again in the patent site but I couldnt.
For those that hear about it for the first time. The product consists of wireless gloves. With them you could grab and hold objects on screen. While you grabbed it the glove had some kind of sensors that made the fingers tighter. So if for example hold a virtual glass of water the glove will allow you to close yoru hand as much as the size of the glass allowed you to.
This can bring huge and tremendous possibilities to the way we control our media and games.
The patent if I remember correctly made a mention on the Playstation and VAIO computers.
Any news on this? Anything?
Btw about the in-game XMB, although personally I am indifferent, there are many that want it and compare it with the 360’s that allow in-game Media Bar. I am pretty sure it would be a good idea to implement it but there is one thing that worry’s me a bit.
It is the amount of memory the OS takes. I ve heard it takes up a lot and I wonder if an in-game XMB will take up more.
Hi Jeff! Yup i second Devon’s part about using ur peripherals for 3rd party games! More eye toy games, and pls pls try to get namco’s guncon 3 functionality to be extended to other developer’s games like FPS shooters (with the original control options still intact of cos)! I miss the flood of ps1 light gun games too, the ps2 just lacked them totally and my guncon 2 just sat on the shelf.
Jeff, you’re a welcome addition to the blog, and I’m happy to see Sony more involved with the community this generation.
I’ve been a Sony fan from the launch of PS1, but these days it’s been hard to support the PS3, with 360 having its way with so many triple-A games that run smoother and with less glitches despite it being a weaker platform. I hope that we can see more promising news on fantastic exclusives (please no more delays) and that we can soon get that in-game XMB (probably the most requested feature here), and Home out of beta.
I don’t have a system yet but I keep up on all the latest news that I can. Here’s hoping you stick around for a long time, my friend.
When will US get DVR for ps3???
Jeff, well my first suggestion it seems like Sony is beginning to implement and that is to shore up the two way communication. We customers feel like we’re heard when we hear back. So I’m glad you’re on board and speaking to us.
Secondly, and probably a more difficult thing to accomplish is keeping us up to date one current efforts. For instance, Home Beta, big title release date changes like we’re hearing rumors that Little Big Planet is now planned for next summer. We understand it’s not wise to give premature release dates, etc.. but if you could just shoot down rumors you know aren’t true and confirm the ones you do, that would be wonderful.
For instance, is Home coming out this Thursday?
I have only one, easy request. Nothing for Firmware or anything like that.
http://www.gamer.tm/news.php?id=1796
I read PS3 might not get a demo for DMC, tis why I got a PS3. PLEASE work on gett the demo along side of XBL. I dont mind the game going multiplatform. But this is stupid. Please Sony get this demo for us.
oi jeff,
what kind of moisturizer do you use?
and you really support arsenal?
for shame!!!!
Well it’s nice to know at least someone is reading our heavy demands.
Do you own any other consoles Jeff? 360/Wii?
whats your fav games at the moment on them
again with what was already said on here, more support for 1080p games! i’m always forced to buy the xbox 360 equivalent of certain games that are on both platforms when the 360 version supports 1080p and the ps3 version only supports up to 720p. i was also a bit upset to see that uncharted only supported up to 720p. i bet the game would have been that much more gorgeous in 1080p. i’m not sure if this is a developer issue or a ps3 issue though.
I tried to send this through the contact us but it was too long:
Hi, just wanted to send some thoughts through regarding some recent discussion here on the blog.
It’s great that Jeff has posted on the blog to inform us of his duties and what SCEA plans to achieve. From this, very good things came about. One being an official Playstation Podcast. I was actually thinking of this today as I listened to Insomniacs back catalog. It will be a great way to get another view into all things SCEA. Unfortunately, most things related to gaming are blocked at my office. So I have come to rely on podcasts to give me those developer interviews, updates, etc., that I am unable to receive throughout the week (I’m a car guy so I have to post on those forums too). Some things to consider regarding the podcasts:
Occurance: Weekly or Monthly. Weekly updates can give your listeners updates on the recent store releases for the PS3 and the PSP. Monthly can wrap up all recent releases and any upcoming or already released firmware updates. Monthly would also be easier to prepare. You can even use the PSEye for a video podcast. Good way to promote hardware.
Where: Why on the PSP/PS3 Store and of course the Playstion.Blog.
Topics: As mentioned above, news about the store, firmware updates, upcoming games, upcoming dlc would be great. It would be nice to hear more about the various posters on the blog regarding their position with SCEA. Interviews with developers, and possibly with fans on specific topics. It will be another great way to reach your fans outside of the blog.
Blog Structure- Jeff also mentioned an update for user accessibility. It would also be great to have a link to your official playstation forums and to your PSP store or to the store only. If you are to have the blog you want to make sure your users have easy access to the specific things this blog discuss. Make sure the PSP Store link is easily accessible for the user to view and travel to. It may even convince a few to pick it up after seeing the selection of games and media.
PS3 Updates: Are the updates full builds or release builds? If you begin to patch it will help speed up for the user. A couple of things to note about the process:
-When user powers on system and it attempts to login and the users system is found to not be compliant with the latest version, present that user with a download or install option at that screen. Remove the action of the user navigating to a different menu selection, scanning for the latest release, and downloading.
-Auto install the system update after downloading. This will be a nice feature for media you opt for background downloading.
-The agreement notice should be contained in a seperate screen selectable by the user to read if he/she so chooses. You can still of course list for the users to read, but present them with the option to agree to the terms of service up front. This, as the above, helps make the system update process seamless.
Information Board would be great if it was fed Playstation Blog updates as well.
Thats all for now. I must send Insomniac a list of wants as well. Thanks!
Thanks for introducing yourself Jeff.
When are we getting an update that will enable the use of our “Personal Jukebox” during gameplay? The original crap box could do it, certainly the most advanced console to date can do it.
And….when will my PS3 play FLAC files? MP3s suck. I don’t like Swiss cheeze….too many holes….just like mp3s.
When will Sony come out with it’s own Media Server that works better than any other on the market? WMP11 doesn’t work (for me), TVersity only works when I go to the PS3 internet browser first and that’s a pain in the (_|_). Winamp Remote won’t play “everything” on my PC.
When are we getting GT5 Prologue? I can’t read Japanese, so I guess you know how that’s gonna go if I/we import the Japan release. GT is the reason why I didn’t get a 360.
Not having 2 player for MotorStorm was a grave mistake. The excuse that they didn’t want to split up the HD graphics doesn’t hold water. RFoM can run 4 people on one screen, can it not? My daughter and I were playing 2 player co-op and it looked fine. Forcing us to buy 2 PS3s and 2 games just to play against family & friends is a good way to piss off your customer base.
Thanks for giving us an ear to chew on and a fairly constant stream of information.
How about a Warhawk demo? If I like it, I’ll buy it.
welcome Jeff Rubenstein, first tell them we only need in game xmb. thats all
Hey DaveTheStalker I am using TVersity and I dont need to go to the PS3 internet browser to work.
Hail Jeff, the Sony Fanboys Voice…lol
I need these questions answered please! I’m from Jamaica and i can’t purchase games on PSN with my VISA international credit card here because i don’t have a US address, although i’ve purchased from several major sites before. How does Sony choose which country they have a Playstation Store for?
2. WHY in the world is Xbox live getting demos before PSN, when they release on the same date for both systems?
Yeah I have the same problem. I am from Cyprus and as a matter of fact Greece also has the same problem. We cant access PSN store and buy things.
We love PSN’s features and games and quite obviously Sony would love our money too. ;)
But since we cant buy anything we dont get a great deal of what makes the PS3 special and Sony doesnt get any extra revenues either. Well…..help us and Sony.
Excuse me, when sony going to bring the PSN card to the US? i want download all the priced content in the PSN, please, thanks
It sounds like you may have moved on past this thread, Jeff, but I wanted to ask about the status of SACD playback over optical connections on the PS3– firmware 2.00 introduced a DTS downmixing which was incredible, and many of us experienced multichannel SACD for the first time as the PS3 doesn’t have 6-channel analog outputs. However, firmware 2.01 removed this DTS capability, and we only get 2.0 channel stereo over optical for SACD playback.
Was this accidentally enabled in 2.0 (and should never have been there) or accidentally removed in 2.01 (and will come back)? Thanks!
nice to see you on the boards jeff.
Please read about this problem with video streaming in 2.01. I can not watch a movie all the way through.. The system Freezes with the last frame image on the screen and the only way to get it to unfreeze is to turn it off.. Controller or remote no longer works, so I have to press and hold power to shut the system down. Totally hung state. It happens at random points, seemingly after the a certain amount of data has been streamed.. the higher the quality of video, the faster it freezes.
I’m using Twonky/Tversity – both with the same result, so it’s not the DNLA.
Previous to version 2.0 I was able to stream all of these same files without a problem, except only in 2.0 stereo. There is some sort of limitation, with regards to stream or buffer or something.
I’m talking MPEG2+AC3 .TS or .M2TS files that are over 10 gig in size.. Or M2TS files with AVC/H264+AC3 also in excees of 10 GB?
Kudos to sony for adding AC3 5.1 for the streamed video and video from the XMB, but you’ve introduced a bug that prevents me from watching my collection, which I was able to do previous to firmware 2.0
2.01 fixed the time length and we can now get past that 2GB mark, but it will always freeze before the videos finish. Many reports on the tversity and avsforums.
Thanks for reading Jeff.
hi just wondering if you can help me on some Qeustions
1. why the Xbox360 is getting Devil May Cry 4 in japan at xmas what`s gone wrong.
we all know microsoft is all root to evil !!
but Devil May Cry 4 NOOO !
2. I keep hearing about a open beta of home out in December are we close to start booking time off work or is this a 2008 thing.
3. why all the new games keep getting push back mths and the xbox get`s it on time.
Thanks for Reading ..
I was gonna let this thread die, BUT 75 more comments…
@mpnjdevil (#237) – done
@Gavi (#242) – we’re working on a Folklore DLC post. Hopefully tomorrow [fingers crossed].
@izeyah (#246) – oh, I/we are well aware of the request. When there’s something concrete to report, I’ll post it in 42pt type. Italicized. In the meantime, feel free to keep demanding it. It’s your right to do so.
@druppy (#247) – the weekly update goes up the second things go live. Things get added at the last minute almost every week, so personally I think it’s more important to put out a complete, *accurate* post up, rather than an earlier, potentially inaccurate post.
@DustoMan (#249) – I think it’ll take me a long time to work up to that rank.
@DevonTheDude (#253) – awesome name, saw DtD perform a few weeks back with Del. To answer one of your questions, click here.
@HotRod (#258) – I need to ask Richard Marks about this (the PS Eye videos gentleman). That being said, not every patent turns into a product.
@djroberts (#262) – no, it’s not. Threespeech has the most recent Home info that I know about.
@Queso (#264) – longtime Arsenal supporter. What other team has their own Tube stop? Exactly. And Neutrogena, mostly.
@milhavoc (#266) – got ’em both. That being said, they’ve both been in storage since I moved out to CA. On the list to try out when I get them back next month: Mass Effect and SMGalaxy. Though truthfully, I can’t say I’ve been missing either one, as I’ve been taken up with RCF, Folklore, COD4, Warhawk, AC, Uncharted, Rock Band, GH3, and Jeanne d’Arc PSP. There aren’t enough hours in the day.
ok, this post is now dead to me, haha. talk to you soon.
Even though we all want Home soon, you rock for keeping us in the loop Jeff. Appreciate it!
Btw, we have the exact same taste in games :)
I’ll post my suggestion on here because i tried to use the Contact Us link you provided and i kept getting the error my remark is invalid.
My Suggestion is to push RTS Developers to add mouse and keyboard support for the ps3. In my opinion this is big. As of right now the ps3 doesn’t really have any out that i know of, but i think this could really push the system even more. Everyone has a mouse and keyboard, why not! I don’t mean JUST mouse and keyboard, they should give people the option to use the controller also.
Not everyone have the lastest and greatest computers to run all these new games. Hell mine has a 8800GT and Empire Earth III runs slow on it with all settings up. Its crazy. Mouse and Keyboard is also one reason i am buying Unreal Tournament for my playstation instead of for my PC.
Thanks for reading my Suggestion.
Heya there Sony,
I just wanted to express my disappointment over the fact that Guitar Hero III’s guitar does not support Rock Band on the PS3 while it does on other platforms.
Plus rumors say it will not be changed in the future, which makes me even more disappointed since getting instruments for Rock Band where I live (and in general) is not the simplest of tasks.
It’d be great if you could change it, but I believe you need much more than my opinion alone to know how frustrating it is to PS3 owners around the world.
Thanks for listening.
@Jeff, welcome, i hope your still answering questions.
Do you know if Haze has been delayed to 2008 and if it has for sure gone multi-platform?
Thanks
please please give us some better ps1 games, and better flash player.
Hiya, do you log each entry against a tally system, such that over time you get a gist of how much interest there is in a particular issue? You know what I mean? Another twenty “InGameXMB” requests, tick, five “Game Specific” requests, and thirty “FirmWareProblem” issues. Oooh, 30 FM issues, that’s a priority!
If you do such a thing, how do you present it, and more importantly, can we see it? I’d like to understand how better to present to you, so that the issues are better categorised and eventually addressed.
Luckily for you, I’m a happy bunny at the moment. I have a few suggestions every now and then, but in general my PS3 experience is one of smiley smiley moments. Though if you could help me procure a new HD screen rather cheaply, I’d be most interested. Ha ha ha!
I am glad to see you here, Jeff.
At last, we have someone who can answer to our questions frequently.
Here is my questions:
1. 2.00 update added new playlists functionality for music and photos. I am very happy! But! What about our videos? Why don’t we have opportunity to create video playlists?
2. In game XMB. Ok, we wait, but as for me it’s not so important.
3. Xbox 360 has MSN. Why don’t we have Skype or ICQ embedded in our systems?
4. Video formats. Xvid and DivX. When? How long should we wait for it?
5.When I first tried to use PS3, I was very upset. Know why? That’s because when I go to the setting section my music stops. Why? I want to listen to my music all the time! I want to listen to music and setup network settings simultaneously!
6. Game addons. Hmm.. I really don’t know it in detail but.. Is it hard to create game addons for PS3? For example, Virtua Fighter 5 – still no online. Resistance – map pack? what? why only two maps? Why game updates on PC we get so fast and we have to wait for a year to get updates of our favourite games on PS3?
7. Demos. No.. I am not asking for more but I want to know. Is it much more harder to create a demo for PS3 that to Xbox 360?
Thanks
@Jeff.. is there any talk on PSN cards? with the Warhawk update coming soon I’m not able to buy it with out PSN cards when is Sony and incognito gonna realize they are loosing money? Please fix the store it’s soooo useless now.

“@DevonTheDude (#253) – awesome name, saw DtD perform a few weeks back with Del.”
Saw him and Del up here in Chico in early November too
hi Jeff, i live in new zealand. i hav a big problem with playing guitar hero 3 online. If u hav any connection with red octane, neversoft would it b possilbe to hav a nz/aus server. In three hours of trying to play online i played 2 games with nz hosts, i knw they were nz hosts because names were like nzrocker.
thanks
@Jeff
Three quick/not so quick questions for you, but first of all welcome to the surface of the blog, and I think you’re just what this blog needs, ‘as I may have stated in previous messages in several other blog topics where the dev’s that started to post, just magically stopped, and user comments seemed to trail on, some of which had some really good points, that were seemingly going un-read/ignored.’
“Gasp!”
So here goes…
Q: Do we truly have a hand or sway in the general direction Sony will continue doing business with us(it’s fans)?
Q: Does everything we(the consumers) post that is seemingly negative(although intended to be constructive feedback) get taken with a grain of salt? (especially concerning those that have great points of concern/influence, but lack factual knowledge of certain industry red tape.) “ie. don’t know how to get their point across, but need to…”
Q: Am I in any way flagged, or on a bad-list of some sort?
I’ve probably said some pretty controversial stuff about the many situations at hand in the recent past, (ie. in-game custom soundtracks, cdn vs. us pricing, etc, etc) I consider these things before I say them, and word myself very carefully as to not hurt anyone’s feelings, because game-makers = people too, but I do try to have an impact with words. I guess what i’m wondering is, do you or anyone who helps with the .blog take note(make list, whatever) of the people that really shine when it comes to blog feedback?
@Jeff
#286 SoulX
is one person, Trying to address everyone’s concerns/problems with the PSN, and PS3 as a whole. I completely agree with him, in pretty much every aspect, I may have worded it differently, but If someone asked everyone on this blog individually through email what 10 things they are concerned for/want with ps3, his list would be in almost everyone’s replies.
Alright, would you please comment on the following commercials I made for PS3?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRECuzgxRy0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxJkUxCRMwo
Thanks in advance
Sony need a developer like Bioware. And why have EA so much problem with PS3?
#290 Kedaro
Thanks for support.
#292 Nobbe69
Do you buy EA games? It they can’t do great games, then why?
Let’s buy and play good games! And EA.. Don’t buy their [DELETED} games if they don’t care about good PS3 multiplatform.
Critical update needed:
—If not full XMB, at least add some form of in-game OS access to the following XMB features.
-Messaging
-Game invites
-Access to Music
—Also, there must be some form of “Acheivements”. A trophy room in Home perhaps?
I have an 8 year old son who wants to know why his friends x-box 360 guitar works rock band and all the Guitar hero games? Our PS3 is a dud to him, as well as me, since we have numerous guitar contollers and cannot rock-out together! I cannot even get a 2nd controller unless I buy it again? Not gonna happen. I would like an answer, without the blame game so I can make a decision before Christmas gets here-
@Jeff
Plz don’t region lock the credit card.
Go Jeff! Hope you enjoy that PSP ;)
Good job….I think it’s needed…
A humble suggestion: Please add a clock to the menu that opens when you press the PS-button.
An equally humble question: How likely do you think it is that the PS3 dvd player will become region free? If that is totally “impossible” (hollywood…), maybe region adapting like computer dvd drives? I’ve only got region 2 dvds (imported my PS3 to Europe from the US since my PS2 games are from the US) and it really sucks that the PS3 won’t play my legally purchased dvds (or let me output in 576p for that matter).
@ jeff: I agree with 298, they should try and unlock the region of DVD’s, as an anime fan I found it frustrating when America got added to a region with Japan then the UK and Europe was given a seperate region code restricing me from both buying anime directly from Japan and from America. Titles released in Europe are more expensive and we see less, some titles like Risky safety never reach the UK, box sets arrive a year later usually etc.
Is it possible for Sony to try and unlock the region player or allow UK/Europe to join Region with America and Japan? As a producer of some anime and soon to be making a channel (animax or anime+) I am surprised Sony would exclude Europe in such a way.
