PS3’s First Birthday: We Felt the Love

PS3 bday

Celebrating this past Saturday: Goodfellas director Martin Scorsese is 65, Actor Danny DeVito turned 63, Milton from Office Space (Stephen Root) is 56, former MTV VJ Daisy Fuentes is 41, and PLAYSTATION 3 turned one year old!

It was on November 17th of last year that gamers put their lives on hold, camped out on sidewalks, and attracted crowds of reporters and onlookers to become the first to enter the PS3 generation.

Now in 2007, nearly 6 million gamers worldwide are part of the most powerful gaming console ever made.

How were they recognizing the PS3’s big day? While the folks at Wired Game|Life, Engadget, and PS3 Fanboy celebrated with cake, it was Destructoid’s birthday wishes which nearly brought a sentimental tear to our eye. Thanks to all of you!

Last year’s November 17 horoscope stated “Your power of attraction this year is quite strong…” and “important groundwork can be laid for the future.” With games like LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear Solid 4 on the 2008 horizon – year #2 of the PS3 era looks very fun indeed.

    #5!!!!

  • Happy Birthday PS3!
I’ll see you on the head of the console market!

  • Happy Birthday PS3!! The future looks bright with games like Haze, LBP, MGS4, GT5, KZ2, Infamous, Resistance 2, Resi 5, and a whole lot more. Keep up the great work. Hope to see it continue on and be leading the gaming industry once again. Thanks Sony for providing an excellent console for games, and other multimedia functions.

  • PS3 well rule again.

  • Happy B-Day PS3!

  • feel so proud to have a ps3 right now. Im with you guys all the way, keep doing great sony!

  • I can’t remember where, but I have to say that what someone said in a comment here is definately true. PS2 sales bode well for the PS3.

    Think about it…

There are over 120 MILLION PS2 owners in the world.
That is almost 5 times the number of Wiis, PS3s, and “other consoles” that have been sold COMBINED!!!!!!
In some places, the PS2 is still outselling the “other console” even though the “other console” is 5 YEARS younger!
Think about what happens when all those PS2 people decide to upgrade…. Guess which of the new consoles they will choose…………..

  • @elmonstro

PS2 sales bode well for the PS3.

…I don’t think so Tim… I heard tell the new 40 Giggers (CECHG01) aren’t backwards compatible at all. If true, they’ve kanoodled the canine again.

  • Sorry I’m late to the birthday party – too busy playing Uncharted and COD4.
    Happy birthday, PS3!
…now I wonder if all the trolls in here left any cake for me…?

  • Well with Haze delayed, might as well just forget about this year. Holiday sales will obviously be pretty terrible due to the lack of exclusive games and a killer app.

Maybe we will get lucky and at least get UT 3.

  • Happy birthday PS3! Keep on churning those games out.

  • Happy Birthday PS3!

  • @Zorox
You, sir, are absolutely right about no exclusives…
…if you forget about Ratchet & Clank,
    and Uncharted,
    and Warhawk,
    and Folklore,
    and EyeOfJudgement,
not to mention the PSN titles like PAIN,
    or HighVelocityBowling,
    or the PSeye games
    etc.

And you’re right. No killer apps, despite having multi-platform games like:
Call of Duty 4 (sold more than Halo 3 already)
or Assassin’s Creed (most successful new IP debut for the past 5 years)
    or Guitar Hero 3
or Rock Band (which is so “unpopular”, it’s practically sold out everywhere before it even went on sale).

The “PS3 has no good games” line is old and bunk now, in case you haven’t gotten the memo. Too bad the same thing can’t be said about your RROD problem child.

Now give me back my piece of birthday cake and get back under your bridge, troll!

  • Sony I am thoroughly pissed at you. You are easily better than the competition but yet it took you an entire year to prove just that. I am disgusted with this company because you have allowed your pride and arrogance to destroy you. Think of all the gamers and consumers in general who enjoy your products, now think of how disheatened they will be, including me, if Microsoft or Nintendo for that matter defeats you this console generation. Even worse, how will we all feel if you indeed have to pull a sega move, and exit out of the gaming industry you ruled for almost 13 years years straight. And don’t tell me that isn’t a possibility crap, because the parent company is depending on you greatly to succeed or they will pull the plug. I am hoping that somehow it is not too late, but I am starting to feel just that. I don’t know how you are going to compete when your triple A titles that get rave reviews don’t even sell in the millions. Ratchet and clank is an awesome game which has been praised by many reviewers, yet the game is not even cracking the top ten. As much as I hate to say it, Microsoft has somehow invaded your market and in some people’s mind starting to take your place. It’s a shame that this is happening but nonetheless it is. You guys are going to have to dig deep and prove to me and every consumer out there why your machine is the better deal. Right now that is awfully hard with big games like Assasin’s Creed getting better sales and having more recognition from the competition. I don’t know how you guys are going to turn this all around, but I sure hope you do……..you have my blessing.

P.S.-the adds are really great but that doesn’t mean you guys are winning again. You should have never let yourselves sink this low, hopefully this whole add campaign does the trick in opening people’s minds and heart’s to the playstation brand again, epecially the PS3. As much as I like the PSN, it doesn’t compare to the competition’s. You have a lot of work to do SONY or sadly you’re done. You cannot count on only PS2 and PSP sales to carry this company over. I wish you the best, despite my disappointment in you.

The problem with Sony right now is people like you giving up on them just because they had a rough year. It’s short sighted people like you that are easily distracted by shiny baubles (of the red ringed kind).
“Pull a Sega move”? One rough start and you’re gonna compare it to Sega who had years of debacles, starting with the SegaCD, then 32X, then Saturn, and finally Dreamcast. Know your history before you open your mouth, kid.

And you do realize that multiconsoles games are selling better on the other console because *gasp* they have a higher install base, right? It’s simple math….for now. You be a true fan like you claim to be? You wanna help Sony? Do what I do – buy those titles for your PS3. Many of them are starting to be just as good if not better than they are for the other system (COD4, DiRT, Oblivion, Assassin’sCreed, GRAW2…).
And speaking of Assassin’sCreed, you obviously know not of what you say, “having more recognition from the competition”.
You obviously don’t have cable or you would have seen the PS3 branded commercials.

Yeah, LIVE may be better than PSN now, but take LIVE year 1 compared to PSN year 1 – PSN blows it away. Look how far it’s come in just ONE YEAR! It may not be there yet, but it keeps getting better and better. Oh, and the price can’t be beat!

Bottom line, kid. Take it from a true game vet – Do your homework and learn your history before you open your mouth and turn your back so easily.

    *hugz!*

  • I think we all agree things could have gone better and..more smoothly for sure..

I got over my being angry with alot of bad Sony moves months ago, i’m just numb now…

The good games will come, the dev kit price has been halved, and we are starting to see some developers harness the Cell as it was supposed to be..

And the PSN is finally rounding out..but at a Snail’s pace..

Hopefully Sony has been waiting to give us all the stuff veryone has been asking for nonstop for a year at Xmas! (you know what I’m talking about- In game XMB, In game custom soundtracks, Frimware updates that DON’T break our systems.. etc. etc.)

I still love my PS3, after all the flac it’s been dealt…

    so HAPPY B-DAY PS3!!!!!

  • Concerning updates, the best feature ever would be to set BLURAY stills (paused shots from any blu-ray movie) as wallpaper. I don’t know how many times PER blu-ray movie I’ve dreamed of this feature. I think you can do this with DVD and Windows Vista, so why not blu-ray and the PS3?

  • I’m very disapointed with the PS3, that never happened with the PS1 or PS2, and I purchased all of them very early on their lifecycles (within a few months of release)! I hope Sony finds herself again, because it fells like they are completely lost right now!

  • Oh, it’s nice to notice that Microsoft gave everyone a free game on their anniversary party (for Live) last week! It’s not a great game, but hey, it’s free and way better than that 2.99 Ski game Sony scamed us with… Watch and learn Sony, watch and learn! Maybe next year you could do that!

  • did any of you guys celebrate playstation 3’s b-day like cut a cake. im joking. but i gave my playstation 3 a break from playing to long. :D
