Updated PS3 and PSP Firmware

409 0

Taking into account customer feedback and some internal testing, we will be making available in the next few days a firmware update for the PS3 (1.93) that fixes the network disconnect issue that some of you have experienced as a result of downloading Firmware 1.92. In addition, we are adding a new firmware update for PSP (3.71) as well, which adds many features that readers of this blog have requested.

The main feature we’ve added with the recent updates for PSP is the ability to set themes on your PSP. Over time we will be providing themes on PlayStation.com, our official PSP site and through PLAYSTATION Store. You can download themes based on some of our popular titles. Be sure to download the files into the following location on your memory stick:

psp memory stick

Once you have downloaded a theme, under settings, go to theme settings, select theme and then custom theme to choose the one you want to display.

You can also now play music while viewing photos or a slideshow. First begin playing a track saved on your memory stick, press the HOME or SELECT button, then navigate to your photos under the Photo icon and begin viewing.

We’ve added several other features including scene search for movies, and you’ll be able to read about them in more depth on the usual update page once it goes live. When it does, I’ll update this post with a direct link.

Update: Here’s the link.

  • What I don’t like is the fact that not all my movies are full screen when I select Zoom anymore. I don’t see why you had to change that in version 3.7. Hopefully 3.71 won’t have that issue. Don’t get me wrong I love the new features in 3.7 and all but I just don’t like the way zoom works on my movies now.

  • Thank you. Keep up the great work. Heavenly Sword today. About to go pick it up in about an hour.

Can we please get news from the TGS via the playstation blog and the PSN. Again thanks.

  • Why is there a link to GAY GAMER.NET?

I do not think that is work safe and should be taken down.

  • I’ll reiterate what C-h-a-o-s said;”In regards to the PSP update, was there a mix up of any kind? PSspot was added but it’s in Japanese, and after updating the ability to connect to “Network update” now gives you an error.”
This really bothers me as to further, future updates.
    Thanks

  • Thank you for posting the update BEFORE it goes live. Classy.

  • I’v noticed that when I play bluray movies, the menu screen (the one that appears when pressing the triangle button) appears all by itself every 30/45 min. Also, since firmware 1.92 update, I’m having problems with pausing, fast forwarding and rewinding. Am I the only one who’s experiencing this issue or there’s someone else there? If so, is Sony aware of it? Are they going to fix it?

  • Sony: New PS3 And PSP Firmware Coming Soon - eXophase Games Network

    […] Updated PS3 and PSP Firmware [PlayStation.blog] […]

  • This is a very good start Sony. Many users wanted the theme option in the PSP, and now the updated formware on both PSP and PS3 really feels great.

  • First of all, where is the quality control???? Why are you releasing small updates that are causing issues. Where are the testers?

Second, NO MORE .01 UPDATES! The updates may be easier than before but they are so annoying, especially when they offer a small benefit. Please stick to major updates only.

  • To #18 You do a PSP upgrade the same way as a PSS3 one, use the ‘Network Update’ option on the XMB, you will need a wifi connection to the internet though.

    To Sony,
Thanks for fixing the Network issue, and we’re now getting some features that make the PS3/P extra special.

  • A serious request:
Why is it that when you’re playing a PSP game, you’re able to put the PSP on standby, and then return to wherever you were in the game, BUT, you’re not able to return to the a middle of whatever song/playlist you were in the middle of while playing music??? I don’t understand why it’s so hard to take care of this feature ASAP? PLEASE DO SO!!

  • How about a firmware update to allow me to play my NTSC Japanese games from the PS1 and PS2 on my US PS3 like I can play Japanese PS3 games on my US PS3?

  • i’m happy for the updates, but i was sad to hear all kinds of news today concerning some of the greatest shmup’s making it to the online portion of a competitive console.

i played one on my ps2 first, so i want to keep it on sony products.

  • how cool would it be if I could put the ps3 on standby similar to my psp. That would be the coolest thing.

  • cool, good Sony STILL waiting for the Coyote Revenge Price CUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So is this for USA only again , or EU getting this as well ???

  • Thanks very much for the 3.70 update for PSP. Themes are really great :) What I really want is store, when we could buy games (from PSOne, PSP), videos and music and download them DIRECT to PSP without using PS3. And of course, we want some new colors of waves also on OLD and FAT PSP :)

  • Could you add listening to music & web browsing at the same time on psp .

  • Soon after I downloaded 1.92, my internet service was cut off for a few days. It’s now back, and for some reason on my PS3, I can’t access most internet websites through it’s browser and the PS Store opens up as if there’s nothing on the page. Is this due to the firmware, or is this because Virgin Media suck?

  • Good stuff, but Eric you said you were working on in-game XMB. Can you please give us an update on it?

  • So after reading through this I have a few thoughts, though I am very grateful for the updates and a post as to why 3.70 hasn’t been posted on the frontpage yet.

I would like to be able to make custom themes for the PSP, for Sony to either release an editor so we can edit the themes that are out so we can make our own or for a way for us to submit our themes to be checked for potential issues before having them released to the public.

Now that you can listen to music while looking at photos how about allowing us to read text files from the photo menu? Adding to that I would like to have a way to save where you were, you know for those of us who read ebooks on our PSP’s and would like to be able to quickly resume from where we were as well as keep your settings from photo to photo (say I turn one sideways, chances are if it is in a folder I will want all of them sideways). #165 (TheFaze) seems to agree with the idea that more then just games should have full support of the standby mode, it would really make it convenient to put the PSP down when say lunch arrives and pick it back up after your done and waiting for the bill.
Lastly, for this area I would like to see PDF support since that would make the PSP an ideal device for reading ebooks and an amazing device to learn with.

As #65 (x15agent) posted, could you look into letting us listen to our music while playing games? And I extend that to also allowing us to listen while using the internet browser, I know it may not be easy with the limitations currently in place (PSP CPU speed)

    Ohh, I like #69’s post (KBG29)
Though for the video I’m unsure what they meant but I know it would be nice to be able to pause a movie at a point and set that screen as to what appears for that video.

#72 (tgammet) is something I heartily agree with, I think the PSP would feel more portable if you could pause say a podcast and resume from where you were at a later date. I would like to extend that to when your viewing photos that are in a folder that the next time you enter that folder it would skip to the photo you were last viewing in it as well as resume from the music file and position you were last listening to.

I agree with #138 (Gunwing) in that we need more online support, the web browser is effective for email and some basic websites but it would be nice to have an updated flash player so we could watch Youtube videos as well as Jana support though those both seem unlikely on the original PSP without them being stored on a memory stick.

A few people I’ve noticed have requested it here and after some discussion about this on your G.A.P.
I feel that the PSP should allow you to customize the controls for any game you play; similar to how the PS1 game options are saved into the save files of the game and are loaded when you first load the game for convenience of play because some people would really like to swap the controls on games that are already out because they would be easier for those individuals to play with custom controls.
Think of it this way, it adds some convenience for those of us who are impaired and for those who are not it makes certain games considerably more enjoyable since those games got extremely poor reviews for controls as it is.

  • I needed this update, since 1.92 I’ve had network issue’s. I’m getting a little tired of these FW updates messing up some part of the PS3 OS every time a update comes out. Sony releases a FW update that will correct one issue but create a whole other issue entirely, then USUALLY we have to wait a month for a fix. In this case the issue was addressed quickly. So, Eric I have a request. Can you please tell the OS programmers to do more serious testing before they release these FW updates.

    THANK YOU..

  • Glad to hear Sony taking notice of users problems+quickly putting out the new update.I have been getting logged in+out without warning since the v1.92 update,so this new one will be most welcome.
    Bring it on Sony!

  • Thank you for the updates, I appreciate the work that goes into this. However, I wanted to bring up something that I’m sure others already have that would be great for both the PSP and PS3, and that is folder creation. Other than by date, there is no other way to organize photos on the PS3. Also, a better sorting system, like “By Title,” would be much appreciated for the Games list for the PS3. It would be very nice if the folders for content on the PSP could be made on the system itself without USB connection necessary to do so.

These suggestions, however, are minor, and though they would be loved, I appreciate that you are currently working hard to fix more serious problems. Thank you always for your support and I hope that you do read some of these comments. Have a great day.

  • Loot Ninja » PS3 and PSP Firmware Updates Coming

[…] PlayStation.Blog sent word that new firmware updates are coming for both the PS3 and PSP in the next few days. […]

  • Since the 1.92 firmware on the PS3, official bluetooth BD remote control doesnt work anymore. On 6 of my PSN friends either. So it’s about the firmware. Impossible to try to re-register it with the PS3, it just log us out of the network.

  • C’mon guys, you’re not in the worst situation; EUROPE is lol
Sorry bout my english, but i’ll try to do my best

I’m from Spain, and to be sincere feedback from Sony here is plain null/stupid/inexistent. Somebody send David Reeves back to whatever division please! (actually,i’m pretty sure his division is disney toasters or bratz artifacts to curl hair)I wish we had this kind of support man…
American boys are doing their best on ps3,i’ll tell you why:

Only thing we got here in the old continent is a mere autofellatio webpage where all of us can delight anytime about How Great Sony Europe Is.K’ there’s something more. Not Much More though.

By the way,and just in my opinion, some of you are asking sony for get things right and that’s great (& i’ll do the same) BUT(please don’t be angry):

-Some of you are asking for improvements already made.Don’t you know how to use your own console?(please, not trying to flame here)

-Some of you are exacerbating the importance of the In-game-XMB,ok,you want it “PLEAAASE PLEASEE PL….”we all heard you,and all that stuff.I’ll tell you what. That’s a fancy little thing;there are more urgent subjects. At least for some people.Anyway would be cool.

-Some of you are asking for things even ignoring the tremendous amount of RAM some of your ideas would need, and WORK for programmers.Again, same ol show “I want my ps3 to cook Hot Pockets with BBQ sauce PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE!!!” Shuddup.

Now,I apologize sincerely if I offended anyone. And will proceed to my (short) wishlist.

-Improved XMB resources consumption by eliminating some unused/non esential graphics features,or complete redesign for less ram consumption.I consider of maximum priority to have an interface that doesn’t eat 96megs in order to get things smoother and add features.
Or else…we could face some more freeze/three bips/stuck in browser/don’t wanna read that Johnny Cash song absurd performance Problems.

    -“Search” for music.

-Up to date Java, flash & various internet plug in support in the browser.(Wanna know what? I don’t have a pc,using PS3,you see? there all kind of urges for every people beyond in-game-xmb lol)

    -Pdf reader,text reader.

    -Video Codecs.

-Support for backwards compatibility with ps2.Can’t play FF12.Nuff said.

Ok,wishing the best for all of you, & Sincerely, deeply thanking to all of you sony guys working for all of us.(including you! lol)

    byee

  • i have failed to understand the constant price drop for console prices this discourages people from buying products because they will be waiting for price since they have become common these dayz

  • Funny I havent had a single issue with this Update,,. or any other for that matter,.

They should add themes to the PS3 as well,

By the way anyone here got the new PSP2001IS(ice silver daxter model) I do and i can’t register it on the sony site sayes invalid barcode anyone else get this??

  • Oh I also agree with music playlists. Possibly smart playlists as well like itunes.

I like these themes. Perhaps you can also do official gameboots as well that are game related.

  • RSS on the PS3 would be nice too,

    Xvid/DivX playback

and improved brower especially Flash and Java ,.

  • Is it just my PSP but why is there no custom icon for the Location Free player in the XMB? with every theme I tried all icons got new custom images except for the Location Free icon.

I hope in 3.71 we also get to choose from all the extra background colors like you can with the PSP slim. Those 12 colors the old PSPs got are just too limited.

  • Sony, I would like to complement you on a great job on firmware 3.70! I was waiting for the highly anticipated firmware 3.60, waiting to get my hands on those new backgrounds, but you went beyond what I could expect. Great job! I also love how you are actually listening to our requests, great job keeping your consumers happy! I like how you are now getting people to turn away from custom XMB themes, which break the PSP’s warranty and can only be ran on “The Bad Firmware” . Great job, the only step you are missing is a editor so people can make these. I haven’t updated to 3.70 yet (I’m waiting for 3.71) and looking at the post above, and I have one thing to ask, “I thought it did have 27 themes…”

Since you are listing to us now I have a few suggestions:

    SETTINGS
    – In-Game XMB (I understand that there may not be enough RAM, but perhaps you can create virtual memory on the Memory Stick, or with the extra memory on the PSP-200X)

    PHOTO
    – A Photo Editor (I also understand there may not be enough storage for this to be included in a firmware update, the remaining remainder of the flash1, and the flash2, and flash3 more than likely don’t have enough room. Perhaps it can be built in on the PSP-200X’s flash, but just make sure your LOYAL PSP-1001 owners can use these updates)

    MUSIC
    – More Visualizations
    – Play Fast, Slow, or Normal (Like in Windows Media Player)
    – Arrange by Artist, Album, ect.
    – Make your own playlists on the PSP (not by spending the time to connect to the computer and make your own ‘Groups’.)
    – Use Ad-Hoc to send music, which the other PSP can keep for a maximum of 3 days. (I don’t know if you have the authority to do this though, like the Microsoft Zune…)

    VIDEO
    – Set paused image as background
    – Set icon

    GAME
(Nothing, You’ve Satisfied All My Needs :D )

    NETWORK
    – PLAYSTATION NETWORK (I know you’re already on this, but I can’t wait for this feature, it’s going to be awesome!)
    – HOME (I don’t know if this is possible I think it is, but have it as a downloadable extra for the Memory Stick Duo and have a XMB icon under Network to detect if it’s installed and launch it!)
    – Updated Flash Player
    – Chat (Perhaps adding a new icon, like in the PS3)
    – Music while browsing (I know this is pretty much impossible, even if you unlocked 333MHz on Interent, but it doesn’t hurt to hope.)
    – Virtual RAM on high-capacity Memory Sticks

Thanks for taking your time to hear what we have to say. Oh yeah, and GOOD JOB!!!

  • Dear Eric that’s a great job the multi task on the psp but like some other said that can be a great thing to had it on the ps3 to. I got a question why i download the update for my psp and its said 3.70 ???? but i get all the feature anyway :) And i have a proposition if you read my post : Can you add a feature like the ps3 for music so we can sort them by album, title, group, etc… because with the ps3 its so nice we can make it random (not by album but by song because album will make random in the album only ) so its like a big jukebox. Really a great feature i hope you will read my post and take care about it :) So keep up the good work and 1 more thing to finish like many time i said and like most of people said PUT MORE PSone GAMES PLEASE :)

  • yea and like the post 188 more vizualisations :) and all he said was really great idea :)

  • i can’t connect using network-update anymore (no thanks to 2.70), so i will have to do 2.71 through usb, then i will be able to use network-update again (unless sony screws up AGAIN and makes the network-update feture not work AGAIN)

  • my psp got the new update 2 to 3 days ago.thanks.but one problem playstation spots in not in english.

  • Quote from cool776: “i can’t connect using network-update anymore (no thanks to 2.70), so i will have to do 2.71 through usb, then i will be able to use network-update again (unless sony screws up AGAIN and makes the network-update feture not work AGAIN)”

It’s not that hard to connect via USB. :( And I’m sure they will fix that, someone else on PSU was having that problem. ;) You mean 3.70 & 3.71. :D

  • Man I jinxed myself! :D
I was running fine till yesterday late night, and now I can get online and in games but PSStore and Web Browser are all goofy.

  • I’m just gonna repeat what alot have said before me.

    IN-GAME XMB would be great
Time/date would be nice to have when u press the PS button
A video converter would be great! Would be so fast on the ps3.

  • in game XMB would be awesome, how bout some ogg vorbis support too? mayb in firmware 2.0?

  • I would like to see more Media Server options like the ability to transfer PS3 files onto my PC. I think there should also be a better Playstation Store/ design and content (like the GT TV coming soon but different content)

  • Glad to hear this. Now I know I’m not crazy. I saw someone flying around in a Warhawk with my exact same screenname. No, I wasn’t playing co-op with one of my friends, they were actually logged in using my account. My big question is how much of my account could they access? I’m not gonna be very happy if someone breaks into my house because they have my address. At least it’s not all bad. Someone is helping me rank up faster on Warhawk :)

  • Well Waht can i say…. Sony, YOU NEED TO PUT THESE FEATURES IN NOW, THE PS3 IS NOT BEATING LIKE IT SO SHOULD now i NEVER buy anything that isnt a sony prouduct when it comes to gaames etc… but man it takes forever 4 u guys toput in a featur that the 360 launched with!! AND WHY DONT WE HAVE XMB IN GAME YET WHEN DISPLAY MACHINES DO?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? THEY ALSO DO ALOT MORE! WHY IS THIS???? AND WHY ARENT THE FIRMWARES ADDING FEATURES TO GET PEOPLE TO STOP USING HOMEBREW (wHICH I DONT GOT 3.70) THE PSP CAN DO sooo MUCH MORE why not let it be unlocked……. oh and why cant we PLAY games on remote PLAY!?!?!?!?!?!? just wondering…. oh more why is it that the ps3 doesnt have an equalizer, better/more visualizations, HOME, custom themes which it would hndle easier, HOME, um and HOME

  • I want internal decoding of DTS-HD Master Audio as well as a firmware update to Profile 2.0 compliance for Blu-ray.

  • Awesome, but let’s hurry and get firmware 2.0 for in game xmb, update browser, and more.

  • since installing 3.70 update haven’t been able to connect to update server(20000006)???? an remote play, rediculous…xcrossbar frozen. will 3.71 fix these issues or what.no sence in having if you can’t use it

  • Men thats coo i buy the PSP 2000 yesterday and i think its coo that we already have a upgrade thanks SONY i’m wathing for the Sony phone lets hope it work for T-MOBILE.

  • WARNING if you have the 3.70 firmware ITS A JAPANEESE FIRMWARE i know because i have a ceramic white psp-1000 from japan, (BROKEN LAZER) andd blk psp 1001 from america, the japaneese psps have ps spot and portable tv as an EXCLUSIVE. it will probobly be permanently on your psp unless sony fixes that. note that it is useless as it needs japaneese servers to connect or its in japneese plus my white psp has 1.52 and i haad p-tv and ps spot since last year. as for the ps3… well if you have portable tv or anything like that u intentionally downloaded a japan firmware for features that you cant even use. lol
