UPDATE: The Firmware 1.90 update is available now; I’ve also included an update below that addresses some of your comments here.
Firmware 1.90 brings with it several new features, many of which readers of this blog have requested – I’m happy to report.
Customization is one new feature: you can now personalize the wallpaper on your XMB with a photo. This was one of the top three requests we received via the blog’s contact form. When viewing a photo, simply bring up the options screen by pressing the triangle button and selecting “set as wallpaper” from the options displayed. Additionally, you can now change the order of the games displayed under the game icon on the XMB.
Another new feature focuses on added communication elements: When you’re sending messages to friends on PLAYSTATION Network, you can now use emoticons. We’ve added a bunch of emoticons that can be easily accessed from the virtual keyboard. Also, another cool addition is, when an avatar is displayed during voice/video chat, the avatar will move in response to audio.
Finally, on the more technical side, you can now play AVCHD videos saved on a Memory Stick or digital video camera, and we’ve added the ability to upscale audio CD output from your PS3. Now, there are two requirements for this feature: the device you’re outputting to must support a sampling frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz, and your PS3 must be connected to that device with an HDMI cable or digital optical cable.
Oh, and one more thing: you can now eject discs using your controller by selecting “Eject Disc” in the options menu after you push the PS button.
Several other minor options will be included in 1.90 including a few new display options that will allow you to adjust your display while playing PlayStation, PlayStation2 and Blu-ray movies.
We’re working on additional features for our next update that will incorporate more of your feedback, so as always thanks for all of your support, and please keep those suggestions coming!

We understand this is something you want and we are working on it. For the sake of keeping all the comments below on topic, please understand that we hear this request and are working toward a solution. When I have some more info to share on this, know that I will do so here on this blog.Now, with all of that said, thanks for the feedback. I decided to address some of the consistent comments in the body of this post instead of within the comments. One thing you have noticed is that under sorting your games, when you sort by creation date, it sorts by the date you downloaded the content. Sorting videos is done by the date that the videos were added to your hard drive. You can also ‘go-to’ a specific time in any of the videos on your HDD, by hitting triangle and then selecting the specific time from the clock at the bottom.
Something a few of you have noticed as well is that you don’t need to have the SIXAXIS controller connected to PS3 through the USB cable anymore to complete the update, which I know is something some of you were asking for.
that sounds like an awsome update keep up the great work psn team!!! but do u think in the next update u could have in-game internet, playstation store, full XMB access, and in-game sound tracks just by pushing the PS button on the controller… I’m sure u guys have already thought of that though. In the update posted by Eric Lempel he stated that one of the top requests through the contact us page was custom wallpapers. Whats the purpose of the BLOG then if your going to look at the Contact Us form?? I am a bit annoyed, ok not a bit…EXTREMELY annoyed…650 posts later and no response from anyone. 90% of the comments posted want in-game xmb access and yet Sony is doing their best to create a smoke screen of ignorance like they do best. I mean come on Sony dont you listen to your fanbase??? Its no wonder why your million dollar system that i spent my hard earned money on is being beaten to the ground by the Nintendo DS..A HANDHELD followed by the Wii…your publicity stunts are costing you HUGE. it was a nice update but it is kinda rediculous how no one has responded after 658 posts ignoring there customers like usual i guess why am i not surprised.

I just hope that by the time HOME comes out that there will be plenty of stuff thats not just movie trailers up for download like more demos. Maybe try to get some of the other publishers to provide more game demos of up and coming titles and current ones like xboxlive has.

And I’m seeing that some people still aren’t satisfied. I mean honestly people, do you know how long the process it takes to incorporate another firmware update. It’s not as easy as you think. I’m sure Sony and the people working on fw updates are doing the best the can. And in-game xmb will probably be at Firmware 2.00 on October 4th when Home is supposed to come out. Don’t quote me on this though lol, just what I’ve read.

When the PS3 was launched did you really think everything that was advertised would be in it…all it was showing was an idea of things to come not what it would come with, the most subtle of minds could have figured that out.
I didn’t pay £400 for a PS3 so i could use an in game XMB and whatever else was shown in the preview of what the PS3 would eventually have…i’m just glad sony are kind enough to even after finishing the most impressive console out there, to even add more and more onto it to making the console even better then before.
But yeah sure sony could have released the XMB and others on launch but then what would be the point when they can figure better ways of utilising the memory and optimising the coding so that it would not suffer as the 360 does when playing music….as the 360 utilises too much hence it over heating and often a very common route to the 4 red lights of doom.
So thank you again for this update Sony…the most useful of the lot has to be the ability to multitask with the chat on videos and on the net :). But i didn’t come here to just say that…i know i’ve just stated the obvious points that Sony already know…but this is to make it clear to those users that keep complaining.
Now i know you want more feedback and input so i will list some ideas now:-
-GIF Support
By doing this you would be able to create animated backgrounds for your PS3…a very nice addition to the update and it solves alot of these “i want animated background requests”.
-Time Display
This has been requested alot, and it really would help the PS3 out alot…its just frustrating when you need to check the time but the PS3 won’t tell you….which kinda make’s the time input option totally pointless because it defeats the objective.
-Manual Organisation
Not a big one but allowing the users to customise their games, videos and music in any order they see fit would make alot of people happy.
-More Physical Memory
Not exactly hard to do but i know Sony want the console to be as optimised as possible…but alot of pages refuse to load up…and sometimes crashing the internet and the whole console.
-Flash 9
Requested a few times now…but yeah updating this would be cool.
-Updated Web Browser
The web browsers pretty nifty in my opinion…but you want stuff to improve on..so basically you could work on making it more attractive and eye appealing…as it is rather dull…but it gets me from A to B so its not a major concern.
And i had some more but they slipped my mind, so i’ll probably post them later. And btw could you guys stop dissing Sony and Eric…programming is a very hard job…especially because of the languages they are coding in….so give them a break and stop complaining….if you really didn’t get what you wanted…you would have realised that when you bought the console…and then returned it because it was dissapointing…yet you still seem to have it and still seem to moan on and on about it….its obvious that you like the console hence still having it….so stop complaining….because it annoys us and it annoys the Team down at Sony.
And here’s a point….did you really think Sony (the no:1 leading game console manufacturer) is going to let their console sit there and rot?…no! So it’s pretty obvious that PS3 will have big things to come(e.g. Home, Final Fantasy XII, MGS4, DMC 4 etc etc)…so just sit in your chairs, on your beds or whatever and play games like you would do with any other console….the PS1 never had any updates and great things happening to it…yet everyone seemed so happy so as you slowly see the point….its a console made for playing games…and as i play games on it i enjoy it and so should you….updates are just little bonuses that benefit us just a little bit more….so be grateful.
And the reason why someone probably hasn’t replied yet is because alot of you are being immature about it…so grow up please. There no point in flaming Sony, all they really wan’t is your feedback and input….flaming isn’t any.

Nicely put without adding curse words in there. When you respond in such a way like you just did, Sony may look at your comment and be serious about it while reading it. I read it myself, and makes a lot of sense, and the sad part is, is that its all true. I just recently purchased a PS3, and by all means, the system is great. My first impressions were, Sony has built a quality system. But one of the things I try to express to Sony (unfortunately through this blog), is to apply that quality that is felt in the system, in everything. That includes the games, the type of updates, the online community service( charge if you have to to make it atleast the equivalent to xbox live), etc.
Sony seems to have this mindset of thinking everything is going well. And that is apparently not seeming that way. Like Loucifer said, people are saying you are better off buying a 360 since most games are on both platforms, and both have their first party titles. I hope Sony gets their act together, because I sure would not want to see the playstation brand go unnoticed because of the competition thats out there. So much to say…. so much to say.. By the way, and the 80GB model news, thats a way to go if you want to lose putting it back to $599. Look at the impact the price drop has made, and move on forward from there. Not back….
Love you Sony, just get it together please!

@Punumbra I agree and alot of those things would be great additions or things for Sony to think about. Also when the PS1 was around and the PS2 I guess I’m not familiar with the internets history BUT I’m pretty sure that because the internet is the primary way to voice your opinions,complaints,etc, without getting punched in the face or something, ALOT of people are abusing the ability to do so. Henceforth why everyone is screaming at Sony and that they are making stupid firmware updates. The obvious thing to do is wait for Firmware 2.0, 3.0,etc instead of the numbers in between cuz I doubt they’d have a huge update in any of those.

Yes, this is true. Thats the type of quality that needs to be put in games. Especially on the PS3 system. Heavenly Sword, Lair, GT5, R&C, and others will accompany MGS4. :-). By the way Sony, thank you for making your first party titles look like they do. It shows that you really want to make quality your highest priority with the PlayStation 3. I hope that you will give developers the necessary knowledge and guidance they need to make the games as beautiful as yours. Can the MGS4 gameplay video be put on the PSN please? I’m sure it would be great to look at on an HDTV.
I have a problem with the 24Hz ON (I have got a LCD Samsung LE46M86DB with firmware 1010, so Automatic 24Hz doesn’t work).

With Blu-Ray “Pirates of Carribean” 1 and 2, I can’t start the movie. When the adversitement are over, I have to press the R1 button “next chapter” to get access to the main menu. And when I want to play the movie, the movie simply doesn’t start, and I’m stick with a dark screen. The only way to see the movie is to select a chapter !
It’s obviously a matter, I hope with other Blu-Ray I won’t encounter this problem. Am I the only one to have this bug ?

Sorry dude, but if you think that by just adding in game XMB access for the PS3 will make it better than 360 you’re wrong. That feature will only allow those to even brag more about why the PS3 is even MORE better than a 360. The PS3 is already better than the 360, but I guess thats your preference in determining whether or not PS3 will get this specified feature to determine its level of superiority over the others. I’m not trying to cause any argument between us, but out of the box, the PS3 is a better buy.

1) Better sorting. Who cares about when you downloaded the file. How about alphabetical? Heck, let me arrange them myself.

3) Better message notification. I hate that the only way to see if you have a message is to select the inbox.
4) Actual Themes. A customizable background is a good start but I want much, much, much more. Changing the icons, colors, animations, etc.
5) …and of course in-game XMB and the ability to listen to your music at any time.

On paper and hardware wise the PS3 is a far more superior machine than 360
BUT
Like the developers of Lair said…they accomplished about 90% of what they set out to do when making Lair but still only tapped 50% of the PS3’s capabilities.
THATS A HARDCORE STATEMENT especially since Lair appears to be an incredible game…
It will hopefully not take as long for developer studios to come to know the exactly what to do to accomplish this task.
If Sony actually stepped up and put some pressure on these 3rd party studios and a little money wouldnt hurt for cryin out loud Sony, you have more $ then G@D…you dont see MS making TV’s, Stereos, Car Electronics, Computers etc etc etc….and yet MS pays $50 million for the exclusive rights to publish 2 exclusive GTA IV downloadable Xbox Live episodes !!! HOW BOUT THAT SONY!!!

Right. Here’s a simple request. It will take you all of a half-hour to implement (at most).
Put a date/time indicator on both the XMB in the upper right corner (similar to the PSP XMB) and one when you press the PS button. Why? Cause knowing the time is useful, every other modern system does it save the DS (no “home” button, you see), and currently the only way to check the time on the PS3 is to go into the date/time option in the settings menu.
For the new firmware, support for the HD-DVD Xbox 360 addon, It could be great play Blueray and HD DVD through the PS3
