Firmware 1.90 Coming Soon

903 0

UPDATE: The Firmware 1.90 update is available now; I’ve also included an update below that addresses some of your comments here.

Firmware 1.90 brings with it several new features, many of which readers of this blog have requested – I’m happy to report.

Customization is one new feature: you can now personalize the wallpaper on your XMB with a photo. This was one of the top three requests we received via the blog’s contact form. When viewing a photo, simply bring up the options screen by pressing the triangle button and selecting “set as wallpaper” from the options displayed. Additionally, you can now change the order of the games displayed under the game icon on the XMB.

Another new feature focuses on added communication elements: When you’re sending messages to friends on PLAYSTATION Network, you can now use emoticons. We’ve added a bunch of emoticons that can be easily accessed from the virtual keyboard. Also, another cool addition is, when an avatar is displayed during voice/video chat, the avatar will move in response to audio.

Finally, on the more technical side, you can now play AVCHD videos saved on a Memory Stick or digital video camera, and we’ve added the ability to upscale audio CD output from your PS3. Now, there are two requirements for this feature: the device you’re outputting to must support a sampling frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz, and your PS3 must be connected to that device with an HDMI cable or digital optical cable.

Oh, and one more thing: you can now eject discs using your controller by selecting “Eject Disc” in the options menu after you push the PS button.

Several other minor options will be included in 1.90 including a few new display options that will allow you to adjust your display while playing PlayStation, PlayStation2 and Blu-ray movies.

We’re working on additional features for our next update that will incorporate more of your feedback, so as always thanks for all of your support, and please keep those suggestions coming!

[UPDATE]
The link on the SCEA website is now live, you can get the full info on firmware 1.90 here. Also, I noticed a lot of your comments were directly related to accessing XMB features in-game. We understand this is something you want and we are working on it. For the sake of keeping all the comments below on topic, please understand that we hear this request and are working toward a solution. When I have some more info to share on this, know that I will do so here on this blog.

Now, with all of that said, thanks for the feedback. I decided to address some of the consistent comments in the body of this post instead of within the comments. One thing you have noticed is that under sorting your games, when you sort by creation date, it sorts by the date you downloaded the content. Sorting videos is done by the date that the videos were added to your hard drive. You can also ‘go-to’ a specific time in any of the videos on your HDD, by hitting triangle and then selecting the specific time from the clock at the bottom.

Something a few of you have noticed as well is that you don’t need to have the SIXAXIS controller connected to PS3 through the USB cable anymore to complete the update, which I know is something some of you were asking for.

  • Why locate eject in the PS button menu? I think it would make more sense to place it in the triangle button menu of the disc.

When you exit dvd or bd playback, you’re returned to the disc, and can immediately eject it. Same after playing a game from disc.

But then again, if you can’t remember wether it’s a music cd, movie, or game you’ve inserted, and you want to eject it, the PS buttons is probably a better shortcut than having to search each menu in the XMB… Oh well, never mind then ;)

  • WHAT I WANT FROM PS3 IS: PS3 HOME. How long will it take for you guys to finish? HOME

  • Ahhh, still no 1080p upscaling for PS3 games… We can do it with PS and PS2 games. The 360 can do it (quite well in fact) with its 720p games. What the crap!?! Those of you who don’t see this as an issue must have pretty damn good upscalers in your TVs. Mine, unfortunately, isn’t so hot and the 720p PS3 games look rather poorly on my set. Oh well, here’s hoping this feature will be in the next release. My PS3 is getting rather bored being used solely as Blu-ray player.

  • Nice, a new firmware its always good to see it coming. :)
As a matter of fact, is there any way that in a future firmware you get rid of the annoying region lock for the old PS1 and PS2 games?
That would be awesome! Keep up the good work!

  • But the xmb can be in game? Why not?

  • Top priorities for Playstation3 new firmwares should be to improve its support for multimedia files and let the PS3 to be used as a mediabox for the most used audio and video codecs and containers.
So here is my wishlist and I can ensure you that everyone I know that bought the PS3 to play Blu-Ray movies on HDTV panels wants the same:

    – DiVX/Xvid full codec support
    – .TS , .TP, .PS , .M2TS MPEG-2 full containers support
    – .AVI and .AVI OpenDML containers support
    – .MKV container support
    – VC-1 Codec support on any container
    – H.264 Codec support on any container
    – MPEG-2 Codec support on any container
    – FLAC, APE, WavPack Lossless Audio codecs support
    – MP1,MP2,MP3,MP4 Audio files support
    – WMV-9, WMV-9 HD Codec support
    – .ASF , .WMV containers support
    – WMA Audio 9.2 and 10 support

If you there at Sony manage to bring all these features on the PS3 I’m absolutely sure that the PS3 would start selling a lot more and many that bought or wanted to buy an HTPC or a Mediabox before would turn to the PS3 instead.

  • How hard would it be for Sony to implement Blu-Ray/DVD movie memory. Everytime I stop movie and turn PS3 off ,have to browse and scan trough disc to resume movie watching. It is very tedious and its getting really annoying. My el-cheapo Sony DVD player can do this for upto 50 discs.

    Cheers

  • Give me a PS3 firmware that allows me to actually use it as media center. Right now my 5 year old KiSS player is lightyears ahead of my PS3 when it comes to connectivity and playing different formats. It streams everything from my computer and has decent features.

  • hello all i agree that the new firmware update is fantastic, its good that sony has listened to its customers. In future updates could sony please add features such as a visual equaliser and a music eq when playing music.

Another problem if it can be addressed to is when iam playing blue ray discs on my non 1080p tv i get green flashes when i load and exit movies could sony please fix this issue until i invest into a full hd tv set.

thankyou keep up the great work.

  • I would like to see the ability to choose a colour for the XMB wave instead of the monthly change.

Also it would be nice to adjust the day to night intensity, so it doesn’t just turn black, but a darker richer shade, with a lighter paler shade for the early morning.

Also if there was some way to mix the wave animation with a background, perhaps having the background image reflecting in the wave?

  • Oh, and DivX support wouldn’t go unappreciated ;)

  • first of i want to thank you sony for bringing us this great console.

but i would absolutely LOOOVE to have x264 playback with ac3 sound.

and FLAC audio playback because i use my ps3 to play my music because i don’t want more hardware right now :) and of course thats its a good media playback unit.

i use this with my BenQ PE-8720 projector and i really think the picture is great and i love it but there will always be things that need to get better :)

oh oh oh i almost forgot i use it to play my CD’s to and i would love to not need to change the auto playback back on or turn my projector on just so that the music starts when i insert a CD.

THANK YOU once again for this great hardware/software.

and sorry to say Microsoft can’t even come close to the functions that you give us :)

    p.s. i hope i don’t ask for to much d.s.

  • Please make the ps3 regioncode free! I have collected allmost any PS RPG and I would love to play Xenogears upscaled on my ps3

  • There’s nothing wrong with posting the same requests that have been posted before, i.e. in game XMB access. (yeah yeah, it’s on the top of my list too) But spamming the comments with the same request over and over is just not cool.

Please show some respect for the people running this blog. They’re not dumb. Say once what you want to say, and then move on.

  • @chrisffm: the PS3 is already region free, but only for PS3 games. I think you can forget seeing PS/PS2 games for other regions running on your console.

  • You spamming tards need to lay off the caffeine and turn the computer off and go outside for a little while. Quit clogging up the blog and overriding posts that actually have worthy merit.

AND RUMBLE SIX-AXIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT WILL COME IN A FIRMWARE UPDATE. Sheesh…

  • hey I was just wondering when is sony going to get an update that allow you to play your favorite music in the game that you get, like madden and nba 2k7 because that was almost my decision maker when facing with buying a xbox360 or ps3. But because I’m loyal to sony and would never go xbox. I stuck to sony and love it. But can developers from sony trying to come up with something please
    thanks

  • I wish that the PS3 will get a “Resume” function for DVD’s and BD’s. I hate it, when i am looking a movie and then i need to stop it and shutdown the PS3 in middle of the movie, and then when i start the PS3 later, i need to look where i stoped the movie.

Please Sony – give us a “Resume” funktion!!! :D

  • in-game xmb with custom soundtracks is all i want but after 600+ comments I THINK THEY ALREADY KNOW!

  • I WANT Full Range RGB HDMI for PS2 games, PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

ps2 games have ugly black colors, give us Full Range RGB HDMI for PS2 games.

  • Eric,

Thank you and the rest of the team at Sony for the update and for continuing to listen to us. It is inevitable that as time goes on and this blog becomes more popular there will be more comments posted to this blog that are, at best, unhelpful for the team.

As many posters noted when the blog was first launched, Sony would have to take the rough with the smooth. Those posting unhelpful comments above are in the minority. I think it is quite clear that the overwhelming majority of PS3 users are very pleased with the progress that Sony continues to make with the PSN, content, openness and customer communication. Please keep this up.

I would like to raise a few points though on something that many posters keep raising time and time again – access in game to the XMB.

    1. To Sony – I understand that in game access to the XMB has been possible right from the release of the PS3, but that it is something which developers decide to implement or not. I understand that many developers have chosen not to implement this option though as it impacts on system memory, memory which the developers believe can be better utilised by the games themselves.

    – Is this conclusion a more-or-less accurate summary of the present position?

    – If so, is Sony considering making in game XMB access a mandatory requirement for developers? (Personally I would hope not if this had an adverse effect on the game).

    2. – To the PS3 community. What is it you really want to do with in-game access to the XMB? Chat? Load custom soundtracks?

Personally I don’t understand/see the need for in game access to the XMB, especially if the quality of a game may suffer for it. As for chat and custom soundtracks, for example, there may be other ways to accomplish this from the game, rather than requiring the need for in game access to the XMB.

I hope my post will encourage some discussion on this topic.

And Eric, if you could, native Xvid etc. codec support in the next firmware update please!

  • only two good things about this update…..boring.
so when you are going to release firmware u 2.0
you have to give us some great t not crap like this

  • I was randomly checking my PS3 everytime I turned it on I was just hoping that I wouldn’t be automatically signed in and last night it happened! Yay! My wallpapers can now be used! Cool thing is I can have different backgrounds for my login,my gf’s, and my extra because I got the Warhawk Beta on that account XD

  • PS3 Firmware Update « Random Musings

[…] I’m not lucky enough to own a PS3 yet, but the Firmware updates are coming thick and fast. Version 1.9 has been released. it follows 1.81 and 1.82, both from last month. I’ve never seen updates come out so fast for […]

  • Wow… it’s one thing to come here and have a wishlist, or some general suggestions, or maybe some constructive feedback or criticism, but the people who are acting like children on these blogs, deserve to be treated like children, and I think I speak for all the mature gamers who come here to get their opinions heard, when I say… Get the HELL off the blog before you make Sony treat us all like children, you’re setting bad examples, and making us all seem selfish….
… to get my point across when I’m angry I use something called ‘my brain’ I use strategic word placement, and ‘rally phrases’ that help people see things my way… you really should try to learn how to do this… instead of spamming … XMB in game… blah blah XMB in game… blah blah… and etc etc. Sony knows it’s the #1 thing on everyone’s wish list, even if not mentioned, they’re no doubt working on a solid way to do this, and not screw it up at the same time, they want it to be perfect… the PS3 is their baby, they want it to be as perfect as it can be. What if they gave us xmb in game access right now, and everytime you were online in a game and went to access your xmb it kicked you from the servers for some unknown reason, technical issues like this can be sneaky, and problematic, I’d suspect that if Sony is doing something along these lines, they are ironing absolutely every problem out of the model, and plan on breaking the news in a timely fashion as to not anger gamers any more than they already have with delays and server problems.
My advice to Sony… ignore the children on these blogs, and please pay attention to people like me.
My advice to the Children on these blogs… Go back to the community threads, and leave this stuff to the gamers who have an IQ.

  • @ Kedaro…I’m pretty sure they are ignoring the children XD

Also, Sony is starting to spoil us…I read on PSX Extreme that we might be getting a Ratchet & Clank demo along with Heavenly Sword…wow…just WOW! even if its not at the same time as HS…the fact its coming…just makes me happy to own a PS3 :)

  • @deadxbabiesxinc
no doubt, looking toward the future as usual, no offense to Sony but they’ve had us all looking forward for about 8-9 months now(not much else to do really), there is a lot of pot-holes they need to fill atm, like the children of this blog I’d really like to be able to access xmb in game no matter what game I’m playing, but to be honest, it’s only for custom soundtracks, cause’ honestly I play through a game without my own music, i turn everything in the house down, crank my new 7.1 surround and dive in, and then when I’ve beaten it once, part of the replay is going back and trying things differently, but what is/would be nice at this second run, and would add replay value to both offline, and online modes of games is the ability to employ my own music tracks from my hdd, this is an option we should have had from the start I agree, and obviously it can’t be hard if ‘that other company’ has been doing it… I’m thinking maybe Sony just wants to implement it better than them? like 300% better maybe? idunno, whatever works I guess, at this point it’s not about jumping through hoops, it’s about tying up loose ends… *raises glass* here’s to hoping our trust – and wallets were not put on the line for nothing… Sony better truly have some ‘fireworks’ for leipzig like reported…

  • Hi Sony!

    Thanks for the update.

I have one issue with this CD Uppsampling thing.

I have my Sony Bravia 40X2000 connected to my PS3 via HDMI, and I have optical out from the PS3 to my Sony reciever (it supports PCM 88).

Sound is great and all works well, the reciever switches to PCM 88 as it shows this in the display on the reciever.

    But my Bravia tells me:
“Unsupported Audio Signal. Check your device output”

I have configured the Sound Settings on PS3 to use Optical Output and not HDMI. How come the PS3 is trying to send PCM 88 via HDMI (if that is the case)?

It’s not a big issue, but it would be nice to get ridd of this message everytime I stop and start a song from the Audio CD on the PS3 or when I switch channel on the Bravia to something else and then back to the PS3 HDMI input.

    Thanks.

  • @612 Kraken
This seems like more of a technical support issue, if I were you I’d take it up with consumer services, you’re one of 612 posting here, as compared to the much lower number of consumer technical support issues reported, that are directly dealt with by consumer services personel, at least for a minute. go through them and you’re bound to reach the proper channels.

  • @588 Amen bro.

  • @ Kedaro, yeah absolutely I think that the wallpaper thing and the custom soundtracks shouldve been from the launch. But I totally agree with you, I think they’re just waiting to outdo the 360 and do something more than just custom soundtracks. Maybe like a downloading thing like iTunes? Who knows whats up their sleeves. But your right…my gameplay would be alot more fun if for example games like Fight Night had custom soundtracks, I got nothing against rap…but the selection is very little even for Rap. But being able to play music like heavy rock during a fight…that would be awesome..anyway.Like you and many others I’ll just be waiting patiently for the good stuff hopefully we’ll get even more of a taste at Leipzig and TGS.

  • This is excellent news for people like me use PS3 for music, video and photos.
Looking forward to trying the audio upscaling.

You should market PS to non gamers. I demonstrated wireless media streaming to my father in law and he went out and bought a PS3!

  • he watz ghud sony, im just wondering when we are goin to be able to play music when we play video games, music is important when playin games just wanted yo to know

  • I am soooo stoked about this update i have been screaming for this for a long time. THANKS!!

Here is a thought though for a new update. would it be possible to do some more PSP to PS3 compatible, for example: i would like to be able to use the PS3 as a back up storage device. For instance if i go abroad and end up doing many things with my PSP killing my memory stick’s storage compacity, i would love to be able to just find a hot spot and use the PS3 as an alternate save location. (old school RE style: i have a pocket but i also have a trunk) Also, if i could access my PSP remotely with my PS3 that would be awesome too, i grow tired of having to connect the usb, its a waste of a slot. Now for the PSstore, i live in japan, and it can be troublesome ordering games from the states, i wish you guys could help distribute your games on the PSstore. In essence i am saying not just have online games on the network but actually sell disc games, and if you could somehow make a department dedicated to the PSstore so that you can combine all the regions, cause its dope having a non-region game system but it kinda loses meaning on the region specific PSstore. Many forget that the PS3 is not region coded and i think this could hurt potential sales. If i could go into the PSstore and see a game, demo, video, or whatever and then choose what language i would like to download it in, that would be the end all to end all. I know this would not happen in the next 2-3 years but it would be nice. thanks again

  • Is it me or is half of these features not in the firmware update and only in the Japan firmware release?

I dont see the option to change video settings whilst in-game, do you? And there more missing. I can only see emoticons, change wallpaper, and some other option for chinese language or something.

  • Wow Metal Gear Online was announced?!? Thats gonna be awesome!

Exactly what is rearrangable in the XMB? Cuz I can’t seem to rearrange anything unless if its the sorting options…but thats not exactly rearranging

  • Thanks for the wallpaper feature. I hope we can get the option to adjust XMB font color because only wallpapers with dark centers work well against the white XMB text.

    @indigovenom
I think there are various legal issues that prevent the PS Store from being international. Every region has different laws and policies. I’m sure many would appreciate an official explantion from Sony though.

  • also, can we get some more option for the visual player, maybe some downloadable graphics, designs or animations- you could sell them for like 50cents a pop- or give them for free :) cause i mean the PSP has like 4 or 5 different graphic animations

  • …Bladestorm demo coming soon in Japan? Come on…now your just treading all over the competition XD

  • I would like for Sony to add DTS-HD Master Audio decoding for blu-ray movies.

  • Glitchy Playstation 3 Browser
    ———————————————–

Yep, I wanted to see what the browser if updated can do. All it did was cause my ps3 to freeze.

I went to test it on myspace.com’s music page and it would continuously load. Even after closing the browser, it would still have the loading icon. First time it froze and I had to reboot because the browser wouldn’t close. second time was more or less trying to get rid of the loading icon at the top right corner of the screen.

    ——————————————

  • ok they need to start banning people who leave those LONG repeated messages .. it destroys the quality feel of the first posts.

im happy with any firmware update .. they just seem like added bonus since i was fine with what i bought ;)

    is it thursday yet?

  • @Sony

Nice work on the firmware. My request has nothing to do with additional functionality for the PS3 but please be a bit more forceful with the moderation of this site. I understand the company can’t be seen as overly controlling but at the same time the experience is ruined by numerous small minded individuals. (Most notably those that have finally learnt how to use copy and paste)

    Thanks.

  • Hiya, for the next firmware update, can we have improved music playback features? I’m obviously talking about a new fantastic visualiser, but also variable speed fast forward and backward, perhaps similar to the video playback.
Also, while I’m asking, a clock on the backdrop would be nice.

  • @Demolition_93

I believe that the option to change the video style only applies to PS1/2 games, not PS3 games. Other features include the ability to eject the disc, while not so useful, it should be there. The rest are audio codec changes and stuff.

  • 630ish comments and not so much as a peep from Eric Lempel

Dude maybe you should take some lessons from Dave Karraker or Patrick Seybold that atleast respond to posts even if its not what we want to hear…atleast they try!!!!

  • Thanks for update.

Still looking but not in unpatient way:

    – A clock on the front xmb screen. It should be so easy. An anlogue or digital clock.

    – FOLDERS. can I make folders for my demos and folders for my games and trailers etc. I’ve so many its hard to find the one I want. This update’s sort mechanism helps a little but it could be so much better if it was like the music folder currently on he ps3

    – Ability to turn off that music that loads when you hover over the game icon e.g. Motorstorm. its too loud.

    – Ability to turn off the loud beep which occurs when you boot the machine

    – Force all new games to pause when you press the PS key

    – in-game XMB.

    – custom soundtracks

    -That’s about it from me.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Thanks for the update – some remarks from Germany on future firmware updates …

.. Music playlists and off course folder would be good
    — selecting an image to visualize a folder (e.g. music folder) becomes akward if you stored a lot of photos as you need to start at the first photo and perhaps scroll down to the last one
    – when updating music info via the net the album labels should be autmatically added as well

    Thank you
