UPDATE: The Firmware 1.90 update is available now; I’ve also included an update below that addresses some of your comments here.
Firmware 1.90 brings with it several new features, many of which readers of this blog have requested – I’m happy to report.
Customization is one new feature: you can now personalize the wallpaper on your XMB with a photo. This was one of the top three requests we received via the blog’s contact form. When viewing a photo, simply bring up the options screen by pressing the triangle button and selecting “set as wallpaper” from the options displayed. Additionally, you can now change the order of the games displayed under the game icon on the XMB.
Another new feature focuses on added communication elements: When you’re sending messages to friends on PLAYSTATION Network, you can now use emoticons. We’ve added a bunch of emoticons that can be easily accessed from the virtual keyboard. Also, another cool addition is, when an avatar is displayed during voice/video chat, the avatar will move in response to audio.
Finally, on the more technical side, you can now play AVCHD videos saved on a Memory Stick or digital video camera, and we’ve added the ability to upscale audio CD output from your PS3. Now, there are two requirements for this feature: the device you’re outputting to must support a sampling frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz, and your PS3 must be connected to that device with an HDMI cable or digital optical cable.
Oh, and one more thing: you can now eject discs using your controller by selecting “Eject Disc” in the options menu after you push the PS button.
Several other minor options will be included in 1.90 including a few new display options that will allow you to adjust your display while playing PlayStation, PlayStation2 and Blu-ray movies.
We’re working on additional features for our next update that will incorporate more of your feedback, so as always thanks for all of your support, and please keep those suggestions coming!
[UPDATE]
The link on the SCEA website is now live, you can get the full info on firmware 1.90 here. Also, I noticed a lot of your comments were directly related to accessing XMB features in-game. We understand this is something you want and we are working on it. For the sake of keeping all the comments below on topic, please understand that we hear this request and are working toward a solution. When I have some more info to share on this, know that I will do so here on this blog. Now, with all of that said, thanks for the feedback. I decided to address some of the consistent comments in the body of this post instead of within the comments. One thing you have noticed is that under sorting your games, when you sort by creation date, it sorts by the date you downloaded the content. Sorting videos is done by the date that the videos were added to your hard drive. You can also ‘go-to’ a specific time in any of the videos on your HDD, by hitting triangle and then selecting the specific time from the clock at the bottom.
Something a few of you have noticed as well is that you don’t need to have the SIXAXIS controller connected to PS3 through the USB cable anymore to complete the update, which I know is something some of you were asking for.
Keep it up. Dont stop the music.
i would like to see
1 bigger friend list
2 in game xmb access
3 more graphics improving features for ps2/ps1 games
4 custom avatars
i want in game xmb friend list, cross game invites and music player, background downloads duringing a movie.
Thanks Sony Entertainment for providing these firmware updates for the ps3!
Though the XMB is not better than the “other” brand (yet); you will overshadow “them” in the future.
What I request for the next update post 1.90:
1.) AVI media support
2.) In-Game XMB
3.) Custom Soundtracks
4.)Web Browser upgrade (Yahoo does not even display correctly — nor other ‘updated’ flash based websites).
Thanks again!
Kingdomhearts 3 will it be exclusive to the ps3? And when will tekken 6 be released? Also nice job on the blog lots of comments for IN GAME XMB, but you guys are cool thanks for all of the features :)
i want
sony live messenger
cool huh
thanks
ok 385 i dont think that will happen for HDD space reasons
sounds great! Does this mean we’ll be able to choose the color of the XMB background? Instead of it being monthly
@xplosner…
yeah what can you do… anyway after the wallpapers all i really want to see is just an upscaler for ps1/ps2 game (“A FULL UPSCALER THAT DOESN’T JUST WORK WITH HDMI… ONE THAT WORKS WITH RBG COMPONENT CABLES), a better messenger program and the ability to turn off the music of your games and play what you have on your HDD…
as long as you continue with the online service then i’m happy…
Great that you guys are adding custom wallpapers finally but here’s my TOP 6 features to be added.
6. Custom videos as background like the wallpapers but the videos move.
5. More video codecs support like Divx, Xivd, ect.
4. Where’s the love for the Yellow Dog Linux that you guys talked bout before the launch of the PS3?
3. More Demos and PS1 games, dont get me wrong I’m glad you guys came out with a new PS1 game “Best PS1 game” but lets face it the box with the x in front of it they call an xbox 360 has more demos out than the Wii and the PS3 put together so hopefully this will change before than.
2. Access to the XMB and play custom music WHILE PLAYING PS3 games would truely give mircosoft some worries.
AND FINALLY 1. This feature is actually for BOTH the PS3 and the PSP because………my major problem is that I like being able to access all my things from the PS3 to the PSP through ANY WIFI signal including all my stuff inside my PC with the PS3 but the problem is that I dont want to have to go to the PS3 and set the remote play on WHILE my PS3 remains on…….instead why not have it to where all you have to do is go to remote play on the PSP and the PS3 goes to remote play BUT INSTEAD OF BEING ON IT GOES TO STANDBY MODE AND YOU CAN STILL GET TO ALL YOUR STUFF. Does this make any sense to anyone?
Sorry this is such a long list but i just hope i got the point across and that everybody likes this list Thanks Sony for creating this blog for the people like us.
Haven’t Been here in awhile and thank you for giving us this update. You guys are almost at the fabled 2.00 which hopefully comes with In game/movie/PS Store/PS1/PS2 XMB. I can dream.
I’ll make a couple of requests since it seems this blog-thing is allowing the sony guys to see what we want:
1.in game XMB (surprising, I know)
2.Demos, Demos, And more Demos
3.cross talk between games (meaning if I get a chat request or a message while playing any game, I don’t have to leave it to talk to a friend)
4.sections for games (meaning i could put all the demos I have on my hardrive into a Demo folder, and my PS1 downloadable games into a Classic folder)
5.Playstation Cards (I know a lot of people who haven’t purchased a downloadable game since they don’t have a credit card)
6.Tracker of trophies (meaning that we get a number to show people how many trophies we have, it will make it just as good as microsofts gamerpoints)
Thanks, I hope someone from sony reads this
Great work on the updates, please keep ’em coming.
And as for my feature requests: When will the Playstation Edge developer kit get released to the public. Microsoft Xbox 360 indies get to use XNA and we Playstation owners get nothing … sob! Also, if the business types won’t let you release Playstation Edge, how about you guys make your OpenGL available for PPC64 Linux – I’d love to try my shader code out using Ubuntu PS3!
@ace2ace
You already can upscale PS1/PS2 games over component, DVD you can’t.
About what time tonight should this show up? Is it usually midnight EST for all of the US?
And what’s with the blog software saying that I’ve already made this comment? I certainly haven’t.
we want more gamer icons

@ EVERYONE A SALES UPDATE FROM SONY!
Today Sony Computer Entertainment America announced that according to Sony’s internal retail data, growth for the PlayStation 3 sales in July have increased by more than 135% at the company’s top five retailers since the new $499 price was announced two weeks ago on July 9th. During this same two-week period, total PlayStation hardware sales have increased by 161%, software by 15% and peripherals by 60%.
NPD June sales data released today show PlayStation sales increased prior to E3, as well. Overall, sales were up 21% in total retail dollars generated year-over-year in North America with total sales of $393 million. PS3 sales were up 21% over May’s figures, with 98,469 units sold at retail. On the PSP side, sales were up 31% year-over-year, selling 290,108 units at retail, while PlayStation 2 showed unit sales of 270,763 for the month.
“The new price on the 60 GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. “This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80 GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk. That will be followed by Heavenly Sword in September and six more exclusive first-party PS3 games in October, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.”

Its wonderful the amount of comments we can get from this. More firmware is what everyone really wants to know but no response yet? What are the top ten most wanted features? why don’t you set up a poll (making sure to list “other: “) to that effect, or, better yet, let us rate the options say 1-10. Here we go, that’s something that might hold some water and keep people from posting “in-game XMB” over and over and OVER again. Tell us you understand at the very least.

I expected more from sorting. All you get is “Creation Date +”, Creation Date -” and “Format.”
Why isn’t there an option to sort games by title (like there is for movies)?
Why can’t we manually sort?
Bah.
