1. What game do you have at E3 this year?
Heavenly Sword – I saw that you, the readers here, have given us 3,700+ votes in the poll on this blog as one of the most anticipated titles of the year, so thanks!!!

2. Tell us more about your game. What’s the story?
The game is a blast to play, we’ve been flattered by the great write-ups so far. We have a great story line as well so here it is: Heavenly Sword is a story of revenge and redemption centering around our heroine Nariko…she’s the one in the screen shot above. She was born into a clan who had been guarding the Heavenly Sword for generations. They had been expecting a god to be born to reclaim the sword, but instead got Nariko. She has been seen as a curse on the clan ever since and when King Bohan invades, the idea of her being an omen of evil fractures the clan. As the King persecutes and decimates them, Nariko is the one that many blame. In a moment of desperation she decides to take charge and use the Heavenly Sword to destroy King Bohan and his army…

3. What did you do on this game that you couldn’t do on another platform?
We’re exploring how to utilize as much of the power of the PS3 as we can to create a powerful atmosphere. There’s a lot of stuff in there, and everything in the game is designed with this in mind. With the level of fidelity we have been able to achieve in performances (detailed facial animations etc), we’re looking to draw you in, to emotionally engage you. Within the combat (which is comprised of thousands of animations), we introduce cinematic cameras to show off your coolest moves. The environments are huge and filled with atmospherics to make it feel alive and real. You can smash up pretty much everything in the environment and all these objects behave naturally under physics. There’s a colossal amount of things going on at once, and you’ll know it from the moment you pick up the controller!

4. What do you think is the coolest aspect of this game?
The super-style moves are the coolest. They’re big and dramatic, you have to work quite hard to get them (especially the level 3 ones) and they completely annihilate the enemy. It’s just so much fun. My personal fav is the one where you drag a guy massively up into the air, ride him back down, slam him into the floor, and while you’re cart wheeling off him, a huge shockwave from his impact with the floor wipes out everyone else.

5. Describe it in five words or less.
Big Sword, Hot Girl!!

6. If you could sit one person in front of your game for an hour, who would it be?
Wentworth Miller (assuming I was there helping him out of course!)

7. What game do you most want an hour to sit in front of yourself (besides your own)?
Assassin’s Creed – I’ve had my eye on that for a while and can’t wait to play!

8. How many E3’s does E3 2007 mark for you?
I’ve been to ten E3’s. Does that make it E30?

9. Describe the pre-2007 E3 experience in five words or less.
Deafening, intense, fun, booth-babes, mullets.

10. Most over used phrase or expression during E3 season.
“Convergence” and “synergy.”

11. You are asked to make suggestions for an E3 survival kit- what three items HAVE to be included?
Redbull, Nurofen, a chiropodist (see my next answer)

12. What advice would you have for someone who has never experienced E3?
Don’t wear heels over three inches, you’ll regret it by lunch on the first day!

13. What’s your favorite part about developing games for a living?
The best thing about my job is being paid to have some of the most truly bizarre conversations. I can’t tell you how many very serious (and heated) conversations I’ve had about the pros and cons of dismemberment. Also, the word “bollocks” has come up in conversation a lot recently… “Bollocks” is a common term used here in Britain; it’s not a particularly naughty word, and Europe’s fine with it, the ongoing debate is whether or not the word should be present in the game for America? I love my job!

  • On PSU.com EA’s vice president of marketing sports branding said about All-Pro Football 2K8 that : “We want to make sure that we give the best experience we can on each platform. In designing a game, there are all sorts of tradeoffs that include frame rate, visuals, features, AI, etc. Football is an extremely challenging sport to replicate because of the number of people on the field, their interaction, and the scope of the environments. As you can see, every company making a football game this year made a decision that the best experience for the Xbox 360 included 60fps whereas the best experience for the PS3 was 30fps. We certainly believe that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are our football products are outstanding experiences and recommend that each gamer look at the entire experience, not just one aspect. We think they’ll be very happy no matter which version of the game they play.”
What a load of crap. Heavenly sword has more to deal with. With so many environments and effects going on how come Sony can do this but EA cannot. Games like Madden and All-Pro Football 2K8 are all confined to one field with the same crowd animation and cartoony looks. Can someone explain why is it that football games cannot look something like RFOM or Heavenly sword with more photo realistic looks.

I wish that Sony makes a football game even buyout 2k sports if you have to. I find it embaracing when so many American developers are complaining about the difficulty in which it is to develop for the PS3 yet Europe and Asia loves it. Where are the brains of this wonderful nation.

  • Nina, please forgivve GFXology’s comment but he comes from a broken home and nobody loves him so he feels the need to lash out. Heavenly Sword has had my interest since the first showing back in 2005! You are my personal Gaming Goddess! Keep up the wonderful work! (Okay, I might be a little biased since I’ve been a lifelong Anglophile but still…) I’m glad to have you on our side! :) Besos!

  • Hack and Slash games get boring fast….I wonder why Developers keep making them? What has happened to trying new things?

  • Playing the demo for Ninja Gaiden Sigma has made me a believer in all their claims . Team Ninja is confident enough in their product to release a demo, as is SquareEnix. I subsequently purchased the unsused special edition of Final Fantasy XII and will purchase the collectors edition of NGS based on my hands on experience. Do I need to give Ninja Theory my $60 for a New game or Gamestop for a used game? Let the gamer’s get a chance to to take the ‘Big Sword and Hot Chick for a spin. Besides, no journalist ever gave me any money to purchase a game

  • @derrickgott007

The new gundam and untold legends: dark kindom are hack and slash games.
Heavenly sword, ninja gaiden: sigma and devil may cry series arent just hack and slash, i wouldnt even call em hack and slash games. These are more action based games , not just hitting 10 000 samekind of enemies with same 3 moves. Theres puzzles, loads of different kind of enemies, moves more than you can learn in a day, bosses and a good story!

  • @Kaze88

Don’t even get me started on Gundam….All gundam games have sucked, and all gundam games WILL suck, just because its Gundam.

  • HS stardust is a great online game and quite enjoyable – great job Sony!

  • @HS Developers

Woah, I just got sold to this game by the latest details that just emerged.

People are dropping jaws over this right now, Im glad you devs really want to make Microsoft feel stupid about passing up this game. Good work! :)

  • @derruckgott07

Oh wow do you ahve a ps3 with internet connection? Have you downloaded the gundam demo? This game is awsome. nOw I might buy my very first gungam game.

  • Give me a job…

  • I really want this game!!! Looks Great. :)

  • I cant wait!!!

  • @stennex:

quote=”How do you justify buying 8Gb for $600 (*for an Iphone) and not buy a PS3 . How ridiculous.”

    my thoughts exactly!!!

all of a sudden the PS3’s pricetag looks better if people will buy a $600 phone!

  • the ps3 has always been too cheap IMO and i live in australia where it’s a thousand bucks.

  • good job,man,we support you!!

  • Ive only heard good things about the Super Stardust HD which was made by Finnish group called Housemarque. Go Finland and Go Go Sony =D.

  • i just saw the joystiq interview …

    Nina Kristensen IS HOT.
    she is! the hottest.

    parhaps more than Jade Raymond.

    I’m confused

  • Heavenly Sword is the reason I got my PS3…

    I’m so excited for it…

    A demo would be nice…
Also: Idea for the game as mentioned before…
    Allow for different outifts…

    Nariko is hot :P

  • This game looks absolutely amazing, a game that looks set to truely show gamers what the PS3 is all about…utter epics.

Sure hit no doubt, will probably have to get a PS3 this year, because of this game (as well as Drakes Fortune)…awsome!

  • This games will be a realy good one just hope that will not be linear …. :)

  • Kratos_ate_Snake

Please put out demos of all the anticipated games at E3.

  • heavenly sword looks great!

but i want to hear about LittleBigPlanet!!! lol i am just a simple gamer looking to apply his own game character to what ever game he can fine with any creation system…so far smackdown vs. raw 2006 takes the cake on creation (specialy if you used a gameshark)…poor Benoit ;(

  • OK, Sony… Here’s the thing. Playable demos are coming to E3… I say, no later than 2 weeks after E3, all of those demos should come to PS Store…

    We’re demo starved right now…

  • When is the next blog post coming?

  • ROBINNL calm down, it was a weekend, probalby Monday.

  • @116

Alot of hot chicks are appearing in the gaming industry as of late. Or maybe they’re just finally coming out for us to see. :P

  • A Dirty Bastard

i agree with 123 its a must keep your loyal subjects happy

  • Sorry, didn’t know blogs don’t come up during weekends.

  • System seller? Quite possibly. Am I buying it? Hell yeah I am.

  • This title was one of the main reasons I purchased a PS3. Cannot wait!

  • Game looks good! I’ll be buying it.

  • I think it will be a system seller. I see a lot of customers come in where I work and comment about how they want the game.

  • This game looks awesome, but I’m worried that the ps3 is having some commons with the N64 in that first party titles are great but 3rd party not that much specially when compared to competition and it looks like it can continue this way for a while http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160709

And please give support to Latin America, everything is late and overpriced here, I mean, the PS3 hasn’t been officialy launched yet :S (though I own one =) )

  • why cant sove devs/publisher get their games to look good and run at 60 fps ( ea..activision….2k ?? )
    whats their problem?? lazy??

how can this game do all this…and their games…. look bad and perform worse??

  • yes yes, early ports were badly done, that’s been covered a million times. But they’re much better already: Oblivion and Rainbow6 are pretty good examples of ports done right (though I havn’t played rainbow yet).
3rd party developers can be clever little monkeys, capable of learning new tricks and everything. Some even enjoy it.
I have every faith that multi-platform games will get better still for the ps3. especially in those cases where they’re developed for the playstation first then ported elsewhere. like sega rally methinks.

  • #135 Rainbow Six is Ok, 360 looks and runs better. But we got free online =)

  • @136

    According to GameSpot:
“Thankfully, the PS3 version is just as good as the Xbox 360 game, and it even packs a lot of content that 360 fans had to pay extra for. The result is one of the very best tactical shooters made to date. ”

    According to IGN:
“Performance-wise, the PS3 title does run just as well as the 360 release with nary a hitch of slowdown in sight. Online is very smooth as well and we never experienced any lag, though voice support is a little sketchy”

So I’m not sure I believe you Konrad.

  • I have an issue with buying a system that cost me nearly 700 bucks that runs @ 1080p but only like 3 freaking games run at 1080p. What gives?

  • Sony needs to step up and give us an update. We upscale ps1, ps2 games and dvds up to 1080p, why can’t I upscale let’s say fight night to 1080p? Sony has to make it clear to developers that it is unacceptable to make games at less than 1080p. And, most of all, why must the same games on the 360 look better than their ps3 counterparts? Thank you

  • I dont have an hdtv so gameplay is where its at(i still enjoy good visuals)

  • This game IS a system seller. It is one of the many reasons I waited outside in the cold for 26 hours to spend $600.00 of my money. Money and time well spent.

I have this game payed off just waiting for the ship date.

  • @138

Looks that you missed the last page on IGN’s review:
“One area that Rainbow Six: Vegas on the PlayStation 3 does fall a little short on when compared to the other versions is with regards to visuals. It’s a nice looking game to be sure, but the whole thing doesn’t look quite as sharp as it could. Colors are a little duller and there isn’t as much use of certain effects, like bloom lighting and such. Some folks may appreciate that aspect to a certain degree, but beyond that it still doesn’t look quite as nice as what we’ve seen previously. Some texture work isn’t quite as sharp, and the characters aren’t as detailed as what’s found in the 360 release, especially in the faces. Weapons that have been dropped pop in and out of view as you approach and walk away when they’re but a mere 50 feet or so away.”

  • i cant imagine how good would be this game specially online
it would be cool on an 70″ bravia
    well done everybody
    you done your job right

  • Rainbow Six was devolped for the 360 so it should look better on the 360.

When 3rd party devs pull there heads out and start dev for the PS3 the games will be leaps and bounds ahead of anything else.

Attn: 3rd party devs, we want quality not your sales quanity.

  • SONY NEED TO ADD INDUSTRAIL LIGHT AND MAGIC COMPANY TO THEIR GAMING DEVELOPERS LIST EVEN.

TRANSFORMERS WUZ DA S$%T! SERIOUS I HAVE NEVER SEEN EFFECT DONE THAT GOOD AND SO WELL. MAYBE THEY CAN DO SOME FOR THE PS3 AMONGST THE OTHER GREAT WORK PS3 ALREADY HAS COMING OUT FOR IT. THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH JUST BETTER.

  • So, a demo is apparently coming real soon? Next week then during the E3 event, we all have low expectations for the PSN, but is Sony going to deliver the goods? give me a Lair, Heavenly Sword and Uncharted demo as well as some new trailers of Killzone 2 and I’ll be happy as Larry.

  • Any word/details on offline Multiplayer features?

  • Nina! Thanks for the interview and yes Heavenly Sword owns that much, voted for it myself.

This is one of my top 3 reasons why I got a PlayStation 3. I’ll be all over this-this fall.

  • This game will be amazing, and will tie me over untill god of war 3.
