PS3 Firmware Upgrade 1.81 Coming Tomorrow

403 0

Just a quick update: we’ll be making available firmware upgrade 1.81 tomorrow which will fix a few small issues some of you have noticed. Most notably is the RGB Full setting which a few of you wrote in about. In 1.80 we added an option to the XMB under settings allowing you to choose between RGB Full and Limited. Basically if you are connecting your PS3 to your TV using an HDMI cable, and if your TV supports RGB full range, the picture quality may be improved when this option is set to Full. Some of you pointed out that the Full setting would sometimes revert back to Limited and 1.81 will address this issue. Please keep in mind that this setting is only effective when the PS3 is connected to a TV using an HDMI cable. You can download the update tomorrow from PlayStation.com [update: the upgrade is now available, you can download it here] or through your System Update option on the PS3 XMB.

We’re continually evaluating and improving PS2 software compatibility too. Where we can, we’ll look to share similar updates like this on our blog moving forward. Thanks for your ongoing feedback and support!

  • This update is meaningless to me. I bought the PS3 when it was first launched. I have a HD TV. However, I can play 720p PS3 games in HD. Why, because I have a 480p/1080i HD TV. I should not have to go out and buy a new TV (I will next year). I also own the other competitors console. And it does not have a problem with upscaling 720p games to 1080i. Sony touts this as being superior to the other console. However, it downscales 480p. It is a shame that my PS2 games look better than my 720p PS3 Games.

  • > 217 (ShadowFox) & 218 (juniperific) :

Yes, we want to watch Blu-ray and DVD through the RGB SCART without the “Green Screen” problem, actually the PS3 does the same stupid thing than the PS2, it automatically switches to YUV when the Blu-ray or DVD players are launched, why ???

With the XMB the movies are played without this problem, so why can we watch Blu-ray and DVD through the RGB SCART ?
    Isn’t it contradictory?

    So please, fix it.

  • I appluad your quick response to the RGB issue. Good job. Now… 1080i upscaling ftw! Or… just tell us it is never going to happen and we’ll cry about it a bit and then move on with our lives.

  • Those who are complaining about PS3 downscaling to 480p on an old HDTV, my advice will be for you to get a new HDTV, that supports 720p (Yes, once you go to one of those HDTVs, there’s no wanting to go back to big, huge, clunky CRTs again).

Many PS3 games released in 2007 which are 720p, will render in 1080i also (launch games do not). The developers are the ones who have to make their games do that, not Sony themselves (PS3 lacks the chip to do it). If you want Resistance to render in 1080i, go tell that to Insomniac.

  • I’m not going to go totally off topic Mana Knight, but you’re wrong. It’s the job of all HD devices to scale to the TV. It’s what every other HD device in existence does. Replacing my fantastic TV just to make you feel better about your crippled HD device is retarded.

  • !IMPORTANT!

While the FULL RGB option now “sticks” in the XMB, PS2 games video output is still forced to YUV.

Basically with 1.81, everything (XMB, PS1, PS3 and BD/DVD movies) can be displayed in RGB (when BD/DVD is set to RGB too, of course) except PS2 games that are still output as YUV with no options to alter that.

This is annoying because I calibrated my tv for RGB FULL. The image is much more contrasted, it frankly has never looked this good but as soon as I run a PS2 game, the brightness is way too high and so the image washed out.

Also it is annoying not to have the Upscale ratio type selection in the PS menu when playing PS2 games. Are we supposed to alter the setting every time in the XMB according to the game we want to play? Annoying. The option would be much better directly accessible from the PS menu.

    So to sum-up, Sony please:
    – Make an option to change the PS2 games video output to RGB.
    – Add an option in the PS menu of PS2 games to alter the Upscale image ratio setting (like DVD movies have it)

    Thanks!

  • I’d really like an ability to add folders to my videos/games.
Also, an ability to extend/remove the delay on the DNLA timeouts.
And maybe just ONE more folder of depth for browsing DNLA stuff?
Also an ability to sort/re-order my PS1/2 memory cards.

  • O.k sony, i love you guys i really do! I have been a loyal sony customer for 12 years but yalls slip ups have cost you dearly. i have spent a total of about $1000.00 on my xbox, xbox games and other xbox stuff. not because i like micorsoft better but because theres just nothing to play on the ps3. you guys need to allocate more resources to making better funner games and focus less on all this other crap!!!!!!

  • This is a great venue for informing us of system updates! I must say it’s much better to be getting confirmation from the source rather than relying on the usual rumour mill regarding an update being out, and the contents of said update. I like that problems are constantly being addressed and that the updates are very quick and painless.

Love the blog format and keep it up!

  • As for madden 2007 you guys(SONY) need to have a meeting with EA Sports, those guys are making yall look bad.
they ported over madden 2007 to the ps3 and when i started playing that game i was sick to my stomach. it looks like techno bowl.It looks like crap

  • Thanks for the update.

  • oooh… I found a hidden fix… The sound glitches I was experiencing in some PS1 games (Resident Evil 1 in particular) is now fixed. Thanks! Great patch.

  • To those ‘rude’ posters;

‘You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.’

The smart ass comments are uncalled for. Sony is trying and with all the heat they have been going through (law-suits, exclusives, rumble, hacking, Manchester..), they still find the time to give back to their customers. They are steadily working hard on in-house exclusives, constantly updating PSN, PS3 & PSP firmware, Development tools all while under attack from the media and YOU.

Sony is taking over a $200 loss on every PS3 sold – They are NOT making profit as of yet! BUT, they stand firm on their stance of FREE online gaming and offer centralized servers for a better gaming experience over the Peer-2-Peer network of Xbox Live (which actually charges you annually!).

Show some damn appreciation for the company that brought gaming into the mainstream and to the level of respect it receives today.

I appreciate you and all your efforts.

Thank you Sony, keep up the great work!

  • looks like the drop outs i was having with video streamed via media servers is now fixed too … we still have to work on letting end users know whats going on in more detail ;)

  • Nice work!!! Thanks!!

i know u guys are working hard at sony just saying it might be time to double up!!!!
i dont wanna see sony fail, but at this rate those nintendo fools might do sony in!!!
the ps 3 is a great machine caise in point go look at the @ home stats 33,000 ps3’s have more processing power than 100,000+ pcs!
    i just want games!!!!!!
LOVE YOU SONY…. to the death!

  • thanks for the update

  • really nice to update the RGB issue so fast !
What i like to see next, is a powefull PS2 emulation with AA x4 ! :p
and ON 24hz option, alot of tv dont tell the PS3 that it can display 24hz, so with the auto option the PS3 “think” that the TV cant display 24hz and go back to 60hz.
there should be a 24hz test, the PS3 would turn on the 24hz for a few second and ask you if there was a black screen or not and then you could choose on/off.
With alot of tv, even the new one, its a huge issue, with lastest Toshiba tv 42x range and Samsung M86 range. Those tv support 24hz but they dont tell it to the PS3 when set to auto :'(

  • now hurry up come with Firmware Upgrade 1.82 XMB access in game

  • It’s great this release is coming out, but PLEASE – PLEASE SONY RELEASE FOLDER SUPPORT! I have hundreds of .mp4 videos, photos, music etc… and it is INEXCUSABLE that I cannot create folders to organize my media! Such a simple thing as creating folders seems very easy to implement.

  • Can we please quit posting the crap from the fake update rumor? How about saying what you actually want instead of cutting and pasting nonsense.

    Are you really desperate for:

Let’s drop the fake 2.0 crap and think for ourselves… please.

    Agreed.

  • Well I do want update 2.00 to happen. Who doesnt want the update. You have to be crazy If you dont want the update.

  • Anyone else see all that advertising mess?

Sony, I would not be offended if you deleted those posts :)

I HATE (i know, strong word) those spammers… annoying as hell.

    Hey guys….

Does it make sense to steal a story, half-ass it, then post a link on the source of the article to your less informative ‘copy and paste’?

    LAME…

Oh a lil post like this??? what a waste of time

  • Don’t worry, us Europeans are used to waiting around for stuff when it comes to Sony.

I’m starting to think I would have just been better off giving my money to a homeless person and getting him to punch me in the face, instead of forking out on my PS3.

  • Euhmm.. i uess this post will never be read by sony guys but: My lynksis router still bugs after the update… ? So what do i do now?

  • yo Relax, why you have to hate. Im well aware that its a rumor and I copied and pasted it because there was no need to type those features that we wanted if its all there. I really want this update and I bet everyone that has a ps3 wants this. It has everything that we asked for, so why not show them.

  • This blog has been gold. Information on updates has been sorely lacking.

As part of the feedback that you desire, I would like to make a suggestion.

Please stop forcing me to update my firmware. I can’t use anything online without updating the firmware. I like to wait a few weeks before updating to make sure it isn’t buggy. I will not be using the store and anything else for weeks while I wait. It’s a bad idea to force me to do this.

  • Stuff for Europe!!!

Those of you with a hankering for the retro will be pleased to hear Sony has confirmed five PSOne games for the PlayStation Store.

Crash Bandicoot, Wipeout, Medievil, Jumping Flash and Syphon Filter will all be available next Friday.

Also in the news bulletin was a reminder that Calling All Cars! is due on 22nd June and Super Stardust HD on 29th June.

  • I really hope that PS3 can provide a force 1080p/24 option like other regular bluray players out there.

I just purchased this PS3 primarily as a bluray player and only to find out that 1080p/24 autodection doesn’t work with my yamaha receiver. (This is a known issue even with sony and other brands)

I’m really thinking about returning my PS3 because of this issue and sony is not even commenting if they plan on doing anything about it. I emailed and phoned sony regarding this issue but no clear answer from them.

    Thanks!

  • Nice to see the quick fix to this problem

  • It’s been rumoured that the 1.9/2.0 update will have the force 1080p/24 option… so it’s just a matter of patience.

  • hey, new updates are cool, but are we ever going to be able to take freinds online at the same time to play online games such as COD3.

also, when will we be able to access XMB during game, and will we be able to switch users during game?

that would be nice. these are the only things i think the ps3 lacks compared to xbox360.

    keep up the good work!

  • again, please update the updating process.

  • There is one bug I’d liek to report with 1.80 and 1.81. It is regarding PS2 games that have 480p widescreen support, when using HDMI audio.

If I select the game (for example, Shadow of the Colossus) to be in progressive mode, the HDMI audio stops working completely. It does work via optical, but I need to go to settings, disable HDMI and enable toslink for that to work.

I am using 1080i via component as my output resolution, and a Yamaha RX-V1700 for the HDMI audio management.

If I go back top the XBM, everything goes back to normal and I contionue to receive teh MPCMsignal, which is cut when I set the progferssive mode to on on such games.

  • with a quick glance through it looks like alo of people want the same things

    XMB access in game,
a more functional friendlist with the abilit to see who you have played lately and the ability to add them as friends from that same menu
ability to play music while in games

and me personally I want messageboards for everygame.

this ps3 general and other boards just aren’t sufficient enough
